Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Too much pain in my hands today to make a regular kneaded loaf of bread....then I remembered the recipe posted here. Went together quick, a little light kneading, popped it in the cast iron fry pan that's always right there and into the oven. Turned out wonderful! I just finished eating and I'm already looking forward to a meatloaf sandwich with it tomorrow. Thanks much for sharing the recipe BigZ!

24/7 light is stressful, try it some time. Give yourself a week of it and see how you adjust.
Agreed. I don't supplement at all, but I also don't "cull" my hens after a couple of years. I have 5 year olds that are still laying. Actually, most of my hens will be 6 this year. The idea of forcing the to lay and have them burn out quickly just doesn't appeal to me. But I also spend much more money on them than I make on eggs sales. So, to each their own.

Happy to hear huntress, that another cheesehead found the wonderful beer bread ease of tasty ho-made bread in less than one hour....yep, had a couple slices of beer bread toast with my 6 layer dinner tonight...dang that stuff is good.

If light is added with a timer...I would add all the time in the morning , waking the hens early and allowing them to go to roost at normal time in the later afternoon to avoid being caught off the roost and the light suddenly clicking off without a warning.... just sayin.

Hope everyone is gonna enjoy the weather this week...what a difference a week can make.

Have Fun...bigz

I wonder if a rye version of the beer bread is possible? I've been thinking of making a small batch of sulze (never made it before and haven't eaten it since I was a kid) and was thinking rye beer bread would be a perfect match.

Years ago I started adding light for the birds in the morning but increased egg production wasn't my goal. I did it so they would have more hours to eat/drink to help them stay warm and hydrated during the frigid months. I never really noticed extra eggs...the pullets would lay but the older girls would still take the winter off. I guess every flock is different.

Naturally, every flock is different, because everybody treats their flocks differently ..

I am still waiting for what to look for in a stressed chicken.
Really. If mine were stressed, would they lay eggs ?
I have had hens and roosters live to 8 years..
If you have a hen laying eggs that long, it is a rare bird indeed.
I do not keep chickens for pets. If they are not producing eggs, they go to freezer camp .
their only stress should be to try to avoid freezer camp.
if given a choice, I bet they would opt for the light..

If you are expecting a chicken to lay 200 eggs per year, you have to supplement the light. especially up here in the Nort Woods..

How about the chickens way down south ? they have more natural long days per year than we do up Nort. are those chickens stressed, then ?

I did not know about the molasses but it doesn't surprise me. As a child my dad had a friend that owned an old family bakery in Milwaukee...on Teutonia Ave I think. We would go on Saturday mornings and one time I got a tour. Dad commented on the fact that the ovens had steam piped in to them. His friend said "Oh yes, it's the goal of every baker to make water stand up by itself!" I think the Wal-Mart bakery has just about succeeded there.
Speaking of Wal-Mart...when we got done at the bakery dad would often stop at the new big box store on the way home. It was called Treasure Island. If you remember TI stores you know how many years ago this was.
