Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Twas a nice one out there today for the first week In March. Did some shed hunting today on about 20 acres without any luck. Prolly venture farther into the thicker areas and give it another try tomorrow. Felt good to get the exercise in the fresh air.

Nice to hear things are going good with the flocks. Good luck with the hatches too. My flocks had a blast looking for those scarce blades of green stuff today. Had to keep a watch for the red tail hawks that had their eyes on my girls. The crows helped to keep them distracted also.

Nothing new really....bigz

Jim...If you try grinding the Pike let us know how it was.

5 for 6 today from the pullets...I think they are all laying now. Started a couple dozen in the incubator yesterday so these will be the start of the next batch. I haven't even eaten one yet.

I talked to my bro yesterday, he has been catching northerns right along. he has his own slot size.. throws some nice ones back.. I told him I didn't care what size he kept for me , just to try the grinding trick..

you might as well eat those first few pullet eggs, they are seldom good for hatching, wait until the eggs get up to standard size regularly .

we got a pullet egg in this last batch,, so maybe more will be laying soon.
I think some of the older ones are hiding their eggs in the lean-to. they seem to be spending a lot of time out there.

Brent, shed hunting, at first I thought you were expanding your flock, until I read it through. You need a dog trained for that. I was watching one of those old guys in the mountains and he had a dog who could sniff out sheds for him,

My husband goes shed hunting and I have on occasion. He does really well with no dog. He must have the nose for it. I have only found one small forked horn. Been doing a bunch of spring cleaning outside around here. Therefore I am one sore puppy. But it does feel great to get moving again!!

the only antlers I ever found still had a deer attached to them,

My temporary mail box fell over.. the snow melted away from under the tub and the whole shebang ended up in the water in the ditch.

I have it back up, but it is precarious at best ..

looked for eggs in the lean-to, found nothing .

dug out the goose's bath tub. now I have to find a short piece of hose to fill it with.

i started cleaning the straw away from the septic tank. way too muddy to work decently around there..

Gotta wait until things thaw a bit more before we can finish up. I have a couple of new landscaping ideas that I intend to do around here this year which always makes me happy. Finally broke it to my MIL that I am getting some silkies this year. She doesn't know that I am going to build a chicken tractor for them to live in nor that one will be a rooster. I am so bad, bad, bad. Also getting 6 larger girls for the original coop. Felt good to be out working today, but I will feel it in the morning. The hubby had built a temporary shelter off the side of the garage and that came down over the last 2 days. Since he has 3 cracked ribs I got to do demolition!!

Can you tell I love to do that? Waiting for the kiddos to get home. That is about it around here.

Well, I've just planted my early spring garden (peas, radishes, spinach, turnips, kale, collards, and onions). The compost that I put in last year has really made the soil loamy, hoorah!!!!! The ground is perfect for loosing the soil and still moist enough that i didn't need to water (plus it should rain at some point this week).

The chickens are itching to get out of the coop now that the snow is all gone!
