Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning,

every animal has a purpose.. but if the fox is eating chicken, he is not doing his rodent patrol.. LOL

After a few good meals, he will not move on so readily ..
This is especially true of owls , and raptors .
I had owl problems a couple of years ago. so I kept all the birds locked up, even the guineas. this was winter time.
after a couple of months, I let the guineas out. the owl got one of them the same day..

I can finally start putting the rafters on the tiny roof.
it was a lot of ladder work putting on the siding. hard on the old joints.

this morning, like right now , I am going onto utube and researching scion rooting some more

I want to make a new grape arbor. and if I can, I want to beg (or steal) some scions from Dan E's pear tree..
I have two different kinds of apple trees of my own I want to try, too..

Thanks Black Brook I looked that up today as well

Landowner: The owner or occupant of any land and members of his or her family may,
without a license and subject to all other restrictions except seasons, hunt or trap on
their own property for coyote, beaver, fox, raccoon, woodchuck, rabbit, and squirrel
year-round

From the DNR site. I was probably over paranoid about getting in trouble for it but someone in my family used to be married to a police officer who lets say was a bit of a power abuser and toed the line of legal in things. SO I have learned to be extra cautious.

Jim, If its not eating the chickens does it count as a good meal!?!?! It has not shown its self again yet but I am not harboring any illusions that it has moved on so quickly. Kids all got here late tonight so in the morning Im going to have to have a talk to them about their missing pet chickens and staying away from the fox.

Hope every one is well

My mother has had major issues w/ fox in her (my old) flock there is a den nearby and in the spring it's the momma and this year one they think one of the males as he is far less sneaky and very bold middle of the day dogs around etc. took out all but 4 of her birds including all of her ducks. He doesn't leave them he does take them sometimes 2-3 at a time. My father (Elmer Fud) has been trying to shoot him for almost a year now and they even had someone try to trap him too. As far as I know it's fine to shoot them on your property if they are killing your livestock. He will keep coming back and that one sounds either very lazy or sick. With the kids around I would want it gone!

good packer win morning,

we must be a popular thread, people from all over the country are checking in. that's OK<, we have room for everybody.. but it helps if you are Packer fans..

the fox doesn't have to be killing anything to get shot.
nobody is going to demand proof that it is killing anything.

yesterday I got all of the small rafters installed on the tiny roof.. then I selected a couple of pine boards and planed them and cut them to size for sheathing the roof.
It was too cold and windy to stay up on the roof any longer than I had to. there will be better days.. as long as the snow holds off..

the potatoes are all dug and put into the basement.
6 milk crates of them.
now I can drag up the garden and spread some manure on it. by next spring it should be in pretty good shape..

I am not going to plant so many potatoes next year.
just one loooong row should do it. one long row is about 100 feet. also one long row of beans.. a short row of beets, lots of corn and that's it.. oh yeah, tomatoes and peppers.. See? that's how my garden gets so big .

Thank you DCBA although I am sorry to hear about your flock. I really would hate to have to deal with it for a whole year! I dont think trapping would work with our barn cats and all the other barn cats in the area. ALl I can imagine is all the cats we would be trapping. The only problems in our area I have heard of is raccoons stealing the cat food at neighbors. I know we have coyotes but they stay in the forests and back fields as we have a lot of hunters out here that do hunt coyotes so they have stayed quite fearful. only actually seen them twice out here in the past 10 years but no where near the houses. That is why I was so surprised to see the fox so unafraid and so close. Hopefully if we don't get it someone else will. Had to tell the kids this morning they are not allowed outside without us and if they see a fox come straight to the house. Havent told them it was their pet roosters that got taken yet. I want them to have a few good hours first. Thank you for your input though! its good to hear someone elses experiences. Jim I am jealous of your potatoes! I do not have a green thumb. I picked some of ours with the kids last time they were here and they put them in the horse feeder cause they didnt want to hold them anymore......I went to get a bucket but alas it was to late. And I agree way to cold to be on a roof for a long period of time!

I just came down off of the roof. I got the little roof all sheathed off. I took measurements for notching the steel roofing around the two chimney flues.

I will cut it out of cardboard first to make sure all the measurements are correct. then I will cut the metal roofing.

only I can't work on it any more right now . I have to get cleaned up to go to my annual physical at 3 O'clock.

tell the kids about the chickens with the good news/bad news method.
good news. you don't have to feed the chickens any more.
bad news, BTW, the fox ate your chickens..

more overtime tonite for me. I don't mind doing it except when it's mandatory. I hate when it's not my choice. Got my truck parts today. 180 dollars worth. So the deer cost me 6 bucks a pound. Next time I think I'll just buy steak at the store.

You could buy steak, but not get the quality ..
way back when, when I worked for other people. I took vacation to work on my house that I was building for us.
My boss decided he needed me and called me in to work off of my vacation.. winter was coming and I was really pressed for time. can we say "P.O.'d" boy and girls ?

I have the tiny roof all prepped and ready for the metal roofing. now I have to make a cardboard pattern of where the flue holes will go and transfer the lines to the metal and cut out the holes.. then it is all down hill after that..
I will be very happy to never have to go up on the roof again.

the potatoes are in the basement and the 2 dozen buttercup squash are in the wheel barrow in the garage.

I will be cutting a lot of grape vines for rooting. I never did it before, so I hope it works for me. otherwise I will be buying grape plants. but that could get expensive for the project I have in mind..

got a record of 10 eggs yesterday.. those freeloading hens must be paying attention to the ones that are laying.

ETA:

I got most of the metal roofing cut and about ready to install.. I am waiting for roofing screws to arrive with Annie.
looks like I will be finished tomorrow.

Jim, you should have no problem rooting the grape vines. I have rooted them before. Unfortunately I no longer have grapes growing here. Those were planted elsewhere. If you end up with too many starts, I would love to give them homes.
