In response to Chikenscratch The "experts" say viability decreases rapidly 7 days after being laid. I have heard of people incubating eggs up to 2 weeks old with varying results. (not more than 40%)

what you say is true, but the 40% I do not agree with.

if a chicken lays all of her own eggs to incubate, it takes her about 2 weeks to lay a dozen.
and she usually has close to 100% hatch most of the time.

I met a woman who saved eggs for a month before setting them, and she claimed almost 100% in her Hova bator.
I cannot attest to her honesty because I only met her once.
but she never lied to me before..

Available now:  1 pure white bearded silkie  and  one silkie mix (White bearded silkie roo over Golden comet hen)  Nice looking chicks.  2 weeks old

Lavender Orps, Bantam Cochins, and silkies in the incubator now...due Easter weekend.

As I said, everyone has varying degrees of success. I think there are A LOT of influences...how the eggs are stored, temp, incubation technique, genetics/parent chicken health, shipped vs non shipped....etc etc etc. I personally try not to set anything older than a week old for the best results, but if I had older eggs, I wouldn't toss em...it doesn't hurt to put them in the incubator.

I will be getting eggs from a breeder...I don't have pictures at the moment, but they are very nice looking...lots of colored lacing and some splash hens as well.

good evening,
the incubator is holding steady at about 99.8F.
I haven't checked the humidity yet.
but the temperature in this basement room has gone from a
steady 61F up to 73F..

I got 2 eggs today, 4 yesterday. I took 2 hens off of their nest this morning and sold them. must have beed the other two egg layers. I am glad about that. the people who bought them are first time chicken people. this should be a good start on their chicken math ..

I am thinking of selling the rest of the black chickens for
$5/ea . I know at least one of them is a layer, but IDK which one. most of them are just freeloaders.
I have a few Sagittas left. If I don't sell them I just might
keep them for awhile.

I still have the purebred Ginger Red Old English rooster.
plus I have two large breed black roosters. they came from hatchery so I think they are purebreeds , too.
I just don't know what breed they are..

All seems to have settled in the coop. I would not say everyone is best friends, but I don't have to do anymore whacking with my stick. New chicks due in tomorrow or Thursday. I wanted to go with the legbars from up in Merrill, but after I purchase vaccine and pay the shipping, I would be adding $12 extra dollars to each already $20 bird. Chicken math, yes, that math, no. Instead I will by 4 new EE from MT&C tomorrow at $5 a bird and they will already have their shot. Makes way more sense. Keeping both new and old chickens in the run for a bit longer today before free ranging them this evening. Only one of the 8 had laid when I checked at 11 so maybe they just need some time.
