Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

bash in june? sounds fun!

in november we moved in to a home we bought on 3 acres that was never used as a farmstead i guess you could say. im so grateful there is a huge garden, apple trees, and blackberries already established. but we have been crazy busy since i swear january clearing trees, brush and basically just trying to get it ready for whatever comes next. we started with 6 chickens a few weeks back and i have another 16 coming(they better) tomorrow. then coming on may 4th comes 10 turkeys. so we are onto a good start! we were busy building a coop last weekend but man i should have known not to leave those men unattended. haha! its turned into a poultry palace in the sky. next will be starting on the run and chicken yard trying to get ready for that first batch living in my basement as we speak. i have asaragus, strawberries, rhubarb, and about 30 trees to get planted as well.it feels as tho im outside every chance i get and shockingly yesterday i loved the crappy weather day since it forced me inside to get caught up on the house that has sadly been neglected the past few weeks. we also have four dogs, 3 german shepherds and a boxer who are absolutely loving their new yard to run. i am worried about the dogs and the chickens outside but i have been working with them inside every day and am rather hopeful that someday can free range occasionally and not sacrifice our birds everytime. our youngest, rebel, the one pictured as my avatar has been amazing! and he is the one im most worried about when we get them outside. he is for sure a bird chaser!

You will be ready to take a break for the bash.
It starts on the first Friday of June. and runs through Sunday.
Saturday is the big pot luck and white elephant sale.
You can come any time and/or stay the whole 3 days if you choose..

the biggest expense is the gas to get there. but well worth the trip..

i was just searching the topic and am super excited it is so close to me. i will for sure be coming and checking it out. so if you see a lost girl wandering around, im sure that will be me! with it being so close what excuse could i come up with not to check it out? and i bet your right a break by then will be much needed!

Misty, I love the bash. It is a great time and each year is something different. People trade eggs, plants, chickens, etc. Some years we've had a ton of kids, others few. Sometimes you are the raffle winner, sometimes not....unless you are Frenchie or Cindy!
There is a full size kitchen and 1 shower/bath per gender. You bring your own food plus food for the pitch-in on Saturday and cash for the white elephant & raffle.

you can bring something for the raffle.
not mandatory.
for the white elephant you wrap something up that you want to get rid of. or something nice.. wrapping can be pretty or just newspaper, or a bag taped shut..

the raffle tickets are usually sold for $1.oo/ea.

the proceeds from the raffle go toward the rental of the campground. usually the proceeds cover the whole cost of the rental..

Brent has brought a grand prize raffle item for a few years.
It is an engraved rocker pizza cutter.
only this year I think it should automatically go to the oldest veteran there. unless someone older than I shows up.

haha i did see that on last years post about it going to the oldest. everything sounds fun and i will for sure be popping in one of the days.

who on here does strawberries? there is a neglected bed here that the pervious owners started and one of my projects today is working on it but im at a loss on where to start. can i plant new roots right in there with them, mulch them, what about pruning them? they are just on one of our retaining walls and they are a complete mess of weeds and over growth.

Well hello everyone! I have been gone from here for a loooong time....but the bash IS coming up and I popped in to find some info about my incubator...
Anyhow, I see no one has posted a thread dealing directly with the BASH. Will anyone do that? or are we good here? Food info? I have a 4 day weekend so I am super excited...did you all realize that this is the EIGHTH bash we have thrown? Has anyone else been to all of them?
Those of us in the Southern area are also planning a mini bash on June 24th into the 25th. I am not sure of the detail yet but I think the campfire is going to be at my place! Lots of people with kids find it super hard to get away for a whole weekend so we have an alternative here in the Southern area. If anyone wants to plan another for the West or North go for it! They are so fun...who else can you talk to about chickens for a whole weekend?

I am anxious to meet those of you that are newcomers...

just start pulling weeds. don't worry if pulling weeds jerks up dirt and an occasional strawberry plant.
You should not have to buy plants. yours will send out runners.
in fact, thin out the plants. leave about 5 to 6 inches all around each plant. crowded plants do not bear well.
transplant the plants that you pull out by thinning,
make more beds.

Yep cs, I think it is 24" across and like 10 or 11" deep.....I'll bring it to the bash and you can check it out.

I have a link to the bash thread in my siggy T. Prolly didn't need one though.

Yep, the heirloom pizza cutter is ordered and will be ready for pick up before the bash arrives.

Nice to see you stop by T...hope Derek is back to normal and we can make another asparagus run if folks are interested? I can place a order for that weekend in advance for folks than want some.

Glad you stopped by misty, we are all happy to help with any questions that arise.

Took suzie out for FFF today. We went to **** Yankees Watering Hole in Hortonville on the Wolf River. The food was great and the place is worth the visit.

good evening,

I went outside this afternoon and was surprised that it felt so warm.
I hopped on Ollie and hauled 3 nice bucketfuls of wood chips to the edge of the black berry patch out back.
I made a nice deep pad for the neighbor to dump the cow siht onto.

there is a place within driving distance where they have 55 gal barrels.. lots of them.. I get my truck back tomorrow. how many barrels can a pick up truck hold ? I am thinking 7 to 10 with the tail gate down and all tied together..

Are those the metal ones Jim? Do you know if they have the covers and bands? They work well for a lot of stuff.
