Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello neighbor!!!:frow
Well sort of. A little south of Rhinelander here. I actually love the coop in the barn idea unless you need that space for other critters it's probably a great place for your birds in our harsh winters. If you decide to go with hatchery chicks because of the sexing, might I recommend Hoover's Hatchery over in Iowa? I've tried several hatcheries and for me, they're the best hands down. The reasons are because first, I am very happy with the quality of the chicks for hatchery stock but more important to me is they all arrived healthy and happy. I think at least in part because they were shipped from far closer than other hatcheries so they spent far less time in the hands of the USPS. Also, they don't charge for shipping. Some of the others are ridiculous on the shipping costs. Feel free to pm me if I can be of any help. Otherwise, BYC, and this thread, are loaded with great knowledgeable folks who are more. than willing to help. Again, Welcome!!!
Nice to meet you (and Jim!) We only have the chickens in the barn, still hoping to get a few meat steers in the spring. We've lived here 3+ years and I know our barn was getting lonely! I might eventually get a few alpacas in the future. We have the floor and walls of our coop built (in pieces in the barn) and have all the supplies for it, but with one kid going off to first year college and another getting married, it was a hectic summer and coop took a back seat. Thank you very much for the suggestion of the Iowa hatchery! I'm going to check them out now. We bought 9 of ours from My Pet Chicken and other 3 from a somewhat local lady. The shipping was horrendous! But thankfully we didn't lose a chick and they were sexed correctly.

Jim, I missed it somewhere. What about the Amish family?

I heard about it from BigZ. it was his neighbor. a young Amish couple with 2 small children.
He was off to work. she was cooking and had an accident with some kerosene.
tried to put out the fire but couldn't .
got herself and the kids outside .. then the house blew up.
they are OK< but they lost the house and everything in it.
maybe Brent can give us an update.
like a clothes drive, furniture ??

Thanks Jim. Yes, Brent, an update please. What a horrible tragedy. With that kind of explosion, did they lose the barn too?

Three years and nothing in the barn???? Wow. You have tons more self control than I have. My hubby wouldn't dare build me a barn. I'm still working on him about the mini goats ;)

I ordered from My Pet Chicken too. Glad you did not have my nightmare. As for what I ordered from Hoover's. I ordered for myself and my neighbor and, so far at least, all were sexed correctly :fl (all heritage breeds and they are only 14 wks so too soon to tell for sure on a couple)

I agree, my hubby is soooo lucky that we do not have a barn. We have enough animals as it is. Well, not really, there are never too many, lol.

Oh yes, I have too many...
Frankie has escaped from the kennel twice.
there is no hole in the fence, and she didn't dig her way out. the walls are 8 feet high and there is a roof on it.
I suspect she is climbing over the dog house . a feat in it's own right.

I like Sunnyside Hatchery. if you order pullets in the spring, they will deliver POL pullets in Sept. I did this a year ago.
got Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks..
Just $5.oo each. can't raise them yourself for that little..

good cool morning, yet.

had a pleasant surprise already today.
GS made coffee before I got up.
One cup of his is enough to last all day..

I am planning on finishing the last wall today.
then cut out all of the rafters

If it rains, I will see if I can get the Blazer running.

No rain expected here today, possibly tomorrow. I can't wait for the cool down!
I got two 20-foot rows of russet potatoes dug this morning. The sweat was dripping before I was finished. Not the best crop I have had...
I cannot wait to see your finished shed Jim.:thumbsup

Kinda funny that I was about to brag how well my russets grew this year. I dug 4 hills and had a heaping 5gal pail...I have a 30ft row to dig yet....they love fertilizer....the more the better!

Yep, nice gesture for folks willing to help the neighbors loss here. Time will determine what they need...they are moved in with the inlaws....not sure what their plans are yet? The barn was far enough away and saved.....the rest is toast...

Nice Packer win....
