looks like a hen to me..

They have a single comb, so I would look at the tail...if it's like the other birds tail in the pic, then I vote hen also.

Thanks for the input, this one's comb and waddle are a lot redder and larger than the other two, just a little nervous, this is my favorite and I can't have a rooster here in town

all chickens are not created equal.
one way to tell a rooster from a hen, is by spreading a wing like a fan.
If the wings from one bird looks like the wing from the other, they are the same sex.
with this method, a hen's wing will look like a fan, a rooster's wing will have about three feathers a little longer than the rest of the feathers..

Oh no, that looks like a cockerel to me Barred rock females are darker (like the one in the bottom corner of your pic), and the males have much more white. Check out this post/thread: Barred Rock Gender

You can also post over in that forum and see what more experienced folks than myself have to say!

ETA: I posted carelessly - I didn't mean to imply all these great folks didn't know their chickens! Please excuse my careless wording

I believe the lighting conditions make the two birds appear to be different shades.

I was going to comment, but I will hold back..On second thought, no I'm not.
I have had barred rocks many times in my over 50 years of chickenry..
I have had many shades of barred rock hens..
often the comb of a rooster goes farther back on the head.
the color dark red does not indicate hen or rooster..
that bird's legs are skinny and the feet are small. I still say "hen"...

Thanks for that support bl4..you're the best! Won't be long now till the newbies are moved from the brooder to their own coop.....waiting for one or two of the peeps to feather out some more yet...they get so much attention in the brooder, that I hate to see them moved for that reason....but it's almost time. Really a strong healthy group of peeps...can't thank Terri and Robin enough for sharing the genes from their flocks!
