Our pellet insert will work off a deep cell battery, in case of a power outage. Our fire place has a cleanout in the basement and the chimney actually has 2 flues. The electric cord plugs in down in the basement, DH ran electric over to the area and put in an outlet just for the pellet stove. We have the option to put another pellet stove in the basement to help with heating the house if we want to. DH seems to think that if the basement was heated to a constant temp, it would help the furnace be more efficient...

Also, I think the Pellet stoves are alot cleaner to run and a lot easier to clean. My sister's house has a high efficiency wood burning insert in their fireplace opening. it looks alot like ours and it really kicks out the heat. It also blocks the cold air exchange that an open chimney offers.

when we burned wood in out standard fireplace in the basement, it heated the whole basement really nicely. but then when the fire died and before we could close the damper, all the heat we gained went up the chimney..
there should be a vacuum that could suck up all the ash and hot coals so the damper could be closed immediately..
now, there's a good invention for somebody.

today I braved the cold and started up the scooter. got it to start without starting fluid.
as long as my luck was beginning, I decided to fiddle with the carburetor and fine tune it.
well, it is just about as close to perfect as I can get it.. now I have to let the motor get cold to see if it starts as good as it does while it is warm.. No reason it shouldn't, right ??

We bought an ash vac to use to clean out our pellet stove. The bin is metal and has a soft sealing gasket to prevent the ash from sneaking out. The hose is heat resistant and the attachments are metal also. Not made to vacuum up red hot embers or burning wood, but resilient enough to handle the occasional ember and hot ash. The motor has an automatic shut off if it gets too hot. The filter is washable also.

This is the one in the basement.

The one upstairs was never used, the sun reflects off the chimney lining. Both were inspected when we bought the house, we have not used either one at all. DH grew up taking care of chimneys at his home so we know what to do.

We would like to get inserts for both, but right now this is fine. The one in the basement is my favorite as it is so unique. Will be a challenge to find an insert that will fit that corner. I need to scrub that beautiful brick too..... I know it looks dated but I like it. The upstairs one I would gladly remove all the rock from and replace it with something a bit easier to clean and work with. A nice mantel would be great but a pita to scribe around all those rocks.

already exists. I own one for my fireplace. bought it online a couple years ago.
