Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

man, you sure are nosey ..
we had some aspergrass for supper last night.
nice and thick and tender quite a way down the stalk.
BL4 will have to answer the rest of the questions
looks to be about 64 sq ft to me.
for those of you who didn't know.
last fall I planted winter wheat all over my garden. today I mowed it down. It was headed out and 3 feet tall. really kept the weeds down.. however, it looks like I will have to actually use a turning plow to get all that straw turned under. I don't think even my troy bilt can handle it this time.
I highly recommend planting winter wheat in the fall.. Maybe I should have got at it earlier and tilled it under while it was just coming up.
as it is, I have only 8 tomatoes to plant.
I will rake the straw back at 8 individual spots and rototill each spot. then pull the straw back for mulch around the tomatoes..

That sounds like a good plan Jim. Good to hear the sparegus is good. I also think you are about right on bl4's coop. She prolly doesn't understand chicken math and the fact that less than twice that will seem small before long. I have 220 sq ft in coop space, and wish I had more, with my bator full of 24 eggs as I type.

chicken math is a self taught course.
You have to live it to learn it.
I took Ollie and dragged a strip through the
straw. It went very well. I didn't even have to
rake the straw back. the lawn mower had it chopped fine enough so that it worked right in.
I had the hilling discs on for the first couple of passe. that didn't work well. the discs acted like depth guages and wouldn't let the spring teeth go deeper. once I took the discs off it was just two passes and I am a foot deep. I made a half dozen passes just to make sure..
I need to find something to add to the planting holes to raise the calcium.. I already have the epsom salt and some wheat germ..
maybe I will go with just that for now and side dress later..
I could use some powdered milk, if I had some.

I would kill for a foot of depth for the garden. Always using a tiller like I do creates a hard pan below the tiller's depth with our clay like soil here.
Just some garden lime would fix your calcium problem...fleet sells 50lb bags I think....or who knows how much they tweaked the weight to make more money nowadays with the same price smaller bags.

I didn't always have deep soil where the garden is now.. I picked rocks for a few years and always went as deep as I could to dredge them up to the surface.
I could build a small foundation for a building with the amount of rocks I picked..
Now I understand why the soil down where I planted the corn was so thin. discs.......
I should buy a packet of corn and plant it up here with the tomatoes..

ETA: the tomatoes are all in.
just pole beans to plant, yet.

I introduced 5 seven week old chicks to my sole surviving bard rock. I read that BR' s can be mean to new members but wow. The chicks got her figured out now, they split up during attacks and she don't know what to do but just stand there and growl. Now if they just figure out the counter attack I think things will turn out just fine. Lol

Amazing how the little ones can actually take over the coop if they out number the older birds after a while.
Hilled the potatoes today, They really look good so far.
14 more days to go on the hatch....I need to get rid of my roosters soon.....might just call pond hill and see if they will process them for me....not cost effective, but easy peasy for sure.
New sinks are in the bathroom down at Camp...they really look nice and turned out great....glad we did it.

I got some 140 gear lube from O"Reilly's .
put some into the tiller. It wasn't as low as I thought it was. I can't remember the last time I checked the level. the tiller is 42 years old.
I oiled all the metal to metal linkages with roller chain lube. it is some really slick stuff and it doesn't collect dust..
I was going to buy some butter cup squash seeds today. both places I checked were out.
we just had a little rain with a lotta wind.
only lasted a few minutes. cooled it down from 71F to 56F real fast..
