Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Introduced the girls to fresh strawberries this week. They weren’t too keen on the Cilantro or oatmeal. 😉

Well, out of the 9 eggs that were in my friend's incubator, 5 hatched. I had one that quit really early, and I tossed it after about 4 days. The first one to pip died in the shell, never enlarged the hole any bigger than the initial pip. The next 4 of them I helped out of their shells. The cheap little incubator could barely hold all 9 eggs, let alone have enough room for a newly hatched chick that flops around and keeps popping the top off. I couldn't get it to hold the humidity enough that they didn't start shrink wrapping right away. The last one hatched on its own while I was at work - but there were only 3 eggs in there and I was able to put a couple of damp paper towels in there to keep up the humidity.

My friend is still off at his emergency - found out he is in another country not just gone to Florida. Not sure when he will be back. So, a $15 bag of bird food for the chicks, a quick thorough cleaning of the brooder in the barn, and I am raising chicks again. I am not sure what he plans to do if any of these are boys. I think he has 6 - 5 week old chicks in his tiny coop right now (guessing maybe 5'x6' max in size). Even if it turns out they are all pullets, another 5 chicks will put him over his allowed 4 hen limit in the city.

I did not plan on raising any chicks this year. Maybe I should stop at Tractor supply and grab a couple Sagitta chicks for my flock. I liked my sagitta's.
