Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Unlike most, I have a shelf built for the hens to roost above the nest boxes.
It's not a problem, but a blessing for easy clean-up every morning
without bending over. The hens love the area, and it has nothing to do with where they lay eggs. I have no problems with the hens above the nest boxes ... just sayin.

Stay Safe ...bigz
Could you possibly post a few pics? I'm needing some ideas in our limited space.

Hi all ~ Newbie chicken mom here. I'm in Western WI near the twin cities. We just moved here from a south metro suburb, but my husband is a "cheesehead since childhood" (raised in Ashland WI). I have 4 buff orp hens, a RIR, and a buff orp rooster (no eggs yet, so I guess they're technically pullets and cockerels LOL). Looking to soak up and learn all I can from you "veterans". I'm also interested in meat birds, especially if anyone has had especially good luck with something a little slower growing than cornish cross, while still providing tender/tasty meat.

While I recognize this is not specifically a Christian forum, sure is nice to see so many people with scripture verses in their signature line...Now, to learn how to do that.

Looking forward to chatting with my "fellow cheeseheads".

We discovered that we have two boys - a Mystic Onyx, and a Buff Orpington. The BO is larger and beginning to crow, and is also a gentle soul. He eats out of my hand. The MO is a bit more scrappy, and just gorgeous.

Does this group allow posting “ Need to rehome a Roo”, or is there a specific thread for this? Thank you!

Welcome to the forum! I hope others can help eith your meat bird question.
Ok, you've been so helpful already....I'm just going to ask you directly. Exciting site today in the chicken tractor. An egg!!! 16 weeks. We don't have nesting boxes built yet. There is a large heavy rectangular box that was left in our shed. It's 4' long (ID about 45") 16" wide (ID about 13"). Would divide perfectly into 3 nice size boxes. Framework is likely 2x6. Thinking I should elevate it slightly off the floor (maybe 1/2 size cement blocks??). With the tall sides would it be too hard for an Orpington or RIR to get into? My poor husband may freak, as we've been running behind getting everything setup (garden is not fully fenced yet). Just thinking if I set it against a wall, and put in dividers it could be a "ready made" nest box. Also, suggestions for bedding would be phenomenal. Thanks!

I think it could work. My Orpington can jump ontop of a small dog kennel thats about 3 ft off the ground. And there roost is 2 or 3 feet off the ground plus mine can jump.
I use American Eco bedding i love it. You do get a bag thats more dusty hete and there but otherwise its pretty good. I do deep litter and i wouldnt ever switch bedding unless needed.
Just dont use cedar.
