Could you possibly post a few pics? I'm needing some ideas in our limited space.Unlike most, I have a shelf built for the hens to roost above the nest boxes.
It's not a problem, but a blessing for easy clean-up every morning
without bending over. The hens love the area, and it has nothing to do with where they lay eggs. I have no problems with the hens above the nest boxes ... just sayin.
Stay Safe ...bigz
Ok, you've been so helpful already....I'm just going to ask you directly. Exciting site today in the chicken tractor. An egg!!! 16 weeks. We don't have nesting boxes built yet. There is a large heavy rectangular box that was left in our shed. It's 4' long (ID about 45") 16" wide (ID about 13"). Would divide perfectly into 3 nice size boxes. Framework is likely 2x6. Thinking I should elevate it slightly off the floor (maybe 1/2 size cement blocks??). With the tall sides would it be too hard for an Orpington or RIR to get into? My poor husband may freak, as we've been running behind getting everything setup (garden is not fully fenced yet). Just thinking if I set it against a wall, and put in dividers it could be a "ready made" nest box. Also, suggestions for bedding would be phenomenal. Thanks!Welcome to the forum! I hope others can help eith your meat bird question.
I think it could work. My Orpington can jump ontop of a small dog kennel thats about 3 ft off the ground. And there roost is 2 or 3 feet off the ground plus mine can jump.Ok, you've been so helpful already....I'm just going to ask you directly. Exciting site today in the chicken tractor.
