Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

During extreme cold (like crazy -20 temps) I mover my ducks indoors; otherwise they had their heated dog bowl available all the time… never mattered to them what the temps were.

Going to put the chickens in lockdown tomorrow morning. Shut all the doors and add some new bedding. My poor roo does not have many points left to lose, and his wattles don’t need any more trimming…. Poor babies……
It hits -35F windchills possible tonight, and this isn't over for us until the 20th. 🥶 Today it's 18F with gusts to 20 mph, but we still let them out as they'll be locked up for two days now. Gave them all HHR "scratch" on the south side of the coop so some are smart and stay there, but nope, the rest are relentless to try to dustbathe in the frozen dirt in the flower beds. :gig

Good Cold Morning! -17 deg on the truck this morning. I let the 7 ducks and 2 geese out. I do not have water in their shelter/huts. I opened the door- had their heated water dish/food a few feet away- they still climbed in their water tubs for a bath. My hubs is home today (he is a teacher and school is closed) I told him if he sees anyone struggling to call me and I would come home and we can put them in the garage for the night. He wasn't real thrilled about that idea but too bad...LOL I know ducks and geese are strong creatures but this weather is just ridiculous.

Hope everyone is staying warm.

Renee

Unfortunately my big bruiser Marans Roo did not survive the cold snap…. We think he had a heart attack or something similar. He was fine yesterday morning and by evening he was gone…. The best dang roo you could ask for. He protected his ladies as well as you would expect, and was respectful to us. He saved his flock from a dog attack when he was just a young lad….. and he will be difficult to replace. Some pics in his younger days.

Very handsome fella. So sorry for your loss. 😞

FFF to everyone! This last week was the coldest weather we
have had in the last 8 years. I'm hoping it doesn't show its brutal face for another 8 years.
Tough losing a great roo bl4. I lost mine last spring, so the flock lost their protecter too. I miss the crowing every morning. It is music to my ears.
Is it spring yet?

Stay Safe ... bigz
