Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Thanks Debbie292d

I'm just getting started in my research on backyard chickens. My city currently forbids any chickens and I have been encouraged by the city manager to bring it up on the March 26th council meeting. However, her "encouragement" amounts to the following...

"You can be on the agenda, and have action discussed (which will probably be “no” due to the ordinance, and we had other requests)

Or you can do a public comment, there is no action, you are planting a thought."

Unfortunately I am not one to engage in futile attempts to influence city hall when they will surely give me a "no" to a discussion of their ordinance. So I am seeking information only for if/when they are forced by the state to allow limited flocks (WI Assembly bill AB42).

Specifically, I'd like to know if there are any small backyard flocks within a couple hour's drive of my home to witness a well managed/maintained flocks. I am in Niagara. On the WI/MI border, 90 minutes north of Green Bay, 90 minutes east of Rhinelander and 90 minutes south of Marquette, MI

Thanks, Tim

Wisconsin Senate Bill 912 (SB912) would allow up to four chickens per residential property in the state. The bill is intended to override local laws that vary and sometimes prohibit backyard chickens.

Key provisions

  • Allows property owners to keep up to four chickens, ducks, geese, quail, or guinea fowl
  • Permits local governments to require permits for keeping chickens
  • Requires notification of adjoining landowners
  • Allows local governments to regulate the location of fowl housing on a property
  • Prohibits the keeping of roosters
Do not know if this was passed.

SB912 is the Senate version which sits in committee with no action for a while. I believe that is an older attempt at what AB42 is trying to do. I don't see these bills going anywhere this year.

While I have discussed this bill (AB42) with the city they are not interested in being proactive about planning for the passage of this bill. That tells me that they don't see anything developing soon.

Maybe if interested parties would start contacting their representatives to support passage it might help. I've done that. With no response so far.

Things are looking up with the egg numbers here. Collecting 5 a day now from 14 hens, so they are just starting to lay
again, after a long winters rest and rejuvenation. They
are singing up a storm in the coop. Nice to hear.

Good luck Wi-Mi. Hope you can convince the folks in
Niagara. You will hear coops smell (not if kept clean)
Rats (keep feed elevated) be prepared to answer questions.

EagleEyes, I think I would put a sign out front .... Fresh Eggs For Sale
and make folks place the cash in hand. Maybe you have
honest neighbors, me not so much here.
I see Kwik Trip is asking $6.99 now. Nice not to be paying
that much for sure. I would charge $4 per doz or 3 for $10.
What are you going to ask?
