eagle eyes, the chickens need light to lay eggs.
about 14 hours per day. some people use artificial light to supplement it. some people do not agree with this. they let their chickens enjoy the winter off from laying.
if you choose to use supplimental light, feed only layer feed. nothing else. no treats,.
yesterday i took Ollie and knocked down the oats in the garden. it was well over 3 feet tall and headed out. the deer were visiting pretty often,. I left a patch standing for the deer. then i spread out the truck load of rabbit manure. it all went well
today I sold the 2 wheel garden trailer. more room in the lean to for Ollie.

We never have supplemented light, and ours lay half as much as usual, but all winter. These are silkies. We do heat, but only to 40°F, and they come out when the temperature is 20°F or higher and no wind chill. Otherwise, we keep them locked up.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. We were outside most of the weekend. Ducks/geese are loving the nice weather- I let them out in the yard the second half of the day. I need to quit doing that, with the grass dying off and no rain/snow the grass is looking rough with them eating, stomping and pooping all over- even on 5 acres they are making a mess. I can tell the HOA (the hubs) isn't real thrilled and gave up on complaining about it. It makes them so happy to run around though. I do have a limping duck, my only male. I need to catch him and take a look but not sure there is anything I can do really. He is eating and moving with the rest of the flock so...I'll wait and see.

I have one duck, sometimes 2 that are laying yet. They quit about this time last year. I don't eat the eggs so it doesn't bother me that they stop. I still have to pick up that straw. Kind of let that slide this weekend. Oops. I keep watching the weather and let some things slide...O I have time, I have time...I STILL have time. It will bite me in the a$$ I'm sure. It always does. :idunno

A coworker of mine started using lights last year. They are happy to get half the eggs I think. They just extend daylight in the evenings a few hours and the mornings.

Tell that to the Ostrich farm in Canada.

The officials in Canada just slaughtered an entire flock of ostriches……. all because some of the birds were ill with avian influenza last year and recovered.

Instead of studying the birds and finding a potential treatment, they killed them all…. because of regulations, and they could. Even with offers from the US to take the flock, it just makes so much more sense to keep perpetuating the practice of mass euthanasia.

Comparing a vector that is carried by unconfined wildlife, to an insect that is easily contained and controlled is an apples to oranges argument. We do not plan on mass extermination of wild birds to control avian influenza.
I guess that makes me revise my feelings on registration, i was not thinking in terms of forced euthanasia or confiscation. But, the Nazis did require Jews to register and then used that to collect us, systematically send us to death camps and try to eradicate us so there’s that. I see how it is a slippery slope.
I didn’t realize that the public could get notifications about outbreaks and such (aside from the news reports), i get them as a veterinarian so it didn’t occur to me everyone had access to those notification tools.
BUT…as a medical practitioner AND someone who does not trust uneducated non-medically trained politicians with ZERO knowledge of epidemiology to make sound medical decisions for the populous i see how it is a double edged sword.

Good to read all is well with everyone.
Thanks for reminding me EE to place the pressure washer in the basement. Mine is still out in the garage.
Gearing up for deer gun season and happy to hear the temps will be reasonable for long hunt times.
The rainbow layers are laying well now; however, the colors are blue, green, light brown, and med brown. Maybe the dark brown pullets are holding out yet. No big deal either way. The young cockerels
in the bunch needed to go to freezer camp. They were relentless in the hen house. I did give them a chance to possibly work out.

Good luck to all the deer hunters!

Stay safe ... bigz

long ago i left my pressure washer out too long. it cracked the pump. tried to fix it. then the parts were way too expensive.
good luck deer hunters, if we have a mild winter, next year should be a bumper crop. this year looks good, too.

We had one of our ducks limping so I bought nutritional yeast and daily sprinkled that on their feed, probably a tablespoon to a few cups of crumbles. It took about a week and she started to lose the limp. After two weeks, it was gone. A couple of times a week, I'll do the yeast now.

I have some yeast stuff left over from when they were ducklings/goslings. Do you mean for the niacin? Their food has it in. Can they get too much if I sprinkle some on and will it be ok for the geese? They all eat from the same food bowls.
