Good Evening.... Glad everyone is having fun and learning experiences with the bators and the broodies....

While I don't work with bators, congrats to all of you that are having fun and learning along the way.

Moving a broody is chancey from the start. (if chancey isn't a word, it is now) One needs to take the utmost care not to disturb the broody from her trance. What works best for me, is to have the hens laying in mobile nest boxes. (all mine are) Then simply and easily at night pick up the whole nest box( hen, eggs, nest) to a new quiet, safe place for her to wake up to. In the morning, things won't be so traumatic for mom. Even then with all the effort, some will break from being broody. The good broodies and moms won't.

When it comes to moving a broody hen, easy does it works best for me.

Enjoy the rest of the week-end.

Well thanks for that Bigzio. Those girls are back in the regular nest boxes again and protecting the eggs they have. I guess they prefer to sit in there. I dont think there is a way to make them portable though...perhaps I could find a cardboard box to fit and then lift it out. Dont know about that working though...have to think on it a bit. For now I left the doors open and maybe a chicken will like it and I can make up a nest under her.
I am headed out now to see what I can see out there...man I wish it would get warm! Have a good night! Terri O

Well I guess I am the "late night/early morning" poster on here!

My last post was 12 hours ago...ya know I cant stay away too long. Well today is the scholarship brunch that DD didnt write on the calendar so I am missing it because of going to look at some hay for sale! Darn--it is really good too! I guess the critter's breakfast comes before my own. THe usual around here. I am getting so keyed up for the chickenstock I can hardly stand it! I think all of you with more "cool" birds than me should bring ones along that are for sale. Or hatch a bunch of chicks that will be ready by then-hint hint!
I am off to visit with my birds...lyesterday when I was out there one of my production reds jumped up on my lap to be petted. Silly girl--then a bunch of other ones came around my feet to see what she was getting. I never realized how "pet like" chickens can be until I had Charlie in the house. (poor Charlie)

Good Morning everyone! I got my replacement eggs yesterday. None were broke. I stuck them in the bator this morning. So they will just hatch a day or so late. Whatchya gonna do?

DH and I actually got to go out together last night. That was a blast. My cousin with the chickens was celebrating her 26th B-day.

Well-better get outside and feed and water the animals. Have a great day everyone!

Do you have the contact info for the Beaver Dam show?
Kids are itching to get out of the house, a close show sounds like just the ticket.

That's some good input there Bigz for us newbies! Thanks! Been busier than a child trying to get that itch out of it's nose this morning. A lot done! Probably only a few out there remember the old movie Elephant Walk well Peaches has his own version. Chicken Walk they follow him around like it was me. He comes towards the house with hens in tow all in a line.

Hello everyone! I will be at the Beaver Dam swap, hopefully I will get to meet some of you. Thats only 25 mins away from me. Sounds like everyone is having a good time with all their eggs and chicks.
Anyone have a good solution to skunk spray. Both dogs got sprayed on Friday and still stink! We have made them stay outside the past 2 days and it hasn't dull it. It was right next to the bottom barn too, so I had to walk through the cloud of stink to get back to the house. When I can in my DH said I stunk! Stupid dogs! Every year our one gets sprayed at least 3 or 4 times. You'd think they would learn? Have a good day everyone. It's snowing here, but is still really nice out.

First....get a trap. Maybe even a couple. If they are getting sprayed that often, there's a big problem. And then go get some tomato juice. Use it like shampoo and just scrub tha day lights out of them dogs. The acid in the tomato juice is said to nutralize the smell.
