Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I haven't been here in awhile, and there was WAY too much to read to catch up - I LOVE that little Columbian!
I just set 11 Columbian Bantam Cochin eggs in the 'bator this morning! (12 were shipped to me, 1 had a broken air cell and I tossed it - I tried incubating a few with broken air cells last year, because I'd read that they occasionally survive, but none of them did anything).

I hope I end up with some chicks as cute as your little "Dumpling"!

Thanks Annarie! That is the one my 7 year old picked out. She said either she wanted a black one or a white one before we went and she found one with both. That little chick is going to be so social, she only puts it down when she's at school.

It's 60 here today!!

What a great day out! I just signed back up for school and this nice weather made me think of my former college days when we would all skip class on the first 60 degree day and drink. Very productive.

Wonder why I never finished? Oh well good memories!
So I'm going to be building a boys pen, Louie decided that he was going to go after my 3 year old yesterday. It was right at dusk and we had just got back from a horse back ride, so she still had her helmet on and he started after her. Well she didn't even see him try because I saw him start and kicked him across the coop off the wall. Them kicked him straight out the door and shut it. DH and I had a agruement about it later when I said I was getting rid of him. Dh says how can you punish him for doing what instinct tells him to do? I say he's a danger and should be taken care of. After our disagreement I collected him out of the barn where he was banned to and took him with me football style to do my chores(which is really hard with one hand, but worth it). I then came in and showed DH pictures of rooster attack wounds, provided by BYCers. He agrees with me but still feels there is a better solution. I know if I get rid of him that one of the others will move into his place and I really like having a rooster when the girls are free ranging for protection and also to have chicks in the spring. I don't know, what do you guys think? Sigh....I hate having to make decisions like this. Thanks everyone!

In my opinion, no chicken is more important than the safety of my kids. Period! I would get rid of him and get a better roo. There are TONS out there to choose from. And you say you already have a replacement. So I don't see why the the solution is so hard to grasp?.?.?

I'm not trying to be mean. But I won't beat around the bush either.

I agree with you fordmommy. Nothing is so more important. My thing is my DH. He has a big heart and hates to think about getting rid of something because of their hard wiring. Thats why we have some of the mismatched animals on this farm. I love him for that heart, but I couldn't agree with you more. I want my daughter to be able to go down with her sister and collect eggs. Not get attacked by Louie. If I get rid of him will his replacement become like him? Is that a chance I will have to take? Could I isolate him for a couple of weeks and bring him down in the pecking order? I guess Im going to have to call my dad. I don't think I can do this one and I know my DH won't. Thanks fordmommy for you words, your right it's just hard because up untill March he was everyone's favorite, because he was such a nice rooster.

The rooster would be made into soup. After being terrorized by 3 different roosters a couple years ago, I have a zero tolerance policy with those buggers. One attack = soup time!

I give my roo's 3 times, 1st time carry him around, 2nd time, 3 day solitary, 3rd time stock pot. the only roo's that get away with being naughty are my show roo's and I only handle them. not the kids only me. My langshan roo tried it but got the idea after the second time.

Good Afternoon...busy day today. Mens lenten breakfast at 6:00am this morning, then out to camp to cut up the trees. Plenty of help, so all 3 huge trees were blocked up and moved to piles for stacking and splitting. We were done by 12:45...that's the way to make wood.

Fordmommy it was already booked. The reservations go fast because just one reservation can secure the whole week end. It's a thought for next year it would provide everything we need, plus it's on the end of a dead end road, totally back in the woods. It's right down the road from me just off hwy 45.

I have keys, next time you stop by, I'll give you a tour, or anyone that's interested.

Scroll down on the left to christus camp...then headers for details.

BBCB I will try to get more pictures tomorrow and post them. NICE sized bass out there, now if the muskrats could get 'taken care of' the DNR would not have much of an issue with their nets.....
