For you and your family.

As for the ? about the chicks, they need to be about the same size as your other chickens. The bigger chickens will beat up the little ones.

as for the chicks, alot depends on how much room you have, and places to hide for them, i just had a batch of 2 1/2 to 3 month olds get out, and my cuckoo marans are running around in the same area ( free range no fence ) a hen here and there would chase one but there was no damage done, in fact some of the little ones would actually tease them and run, quite funny to watch.

BCC I can just see it. Na Na Na Na Na Na

! Then run.

fm there was never any question about you catching Peaches in that manner. Maybe he just freaks out. Just like the BK King freaks me out for no reason. Always smilin. Scary dude! The towels and rugs don't seem to bother him when their on the line. My Crested Flycatchers are busy adding to their old nests. Enjoy watching them and using a mirror to check on the eggs and little ones. Today is a domestic day. Did 7 loads of wash, most is hung on the line. Even did all the house rugs. $16 to wash it all. Going to look into grey water regulations. We have holding tanks, not conducive to a washer. But was just thinking about one of my future remodel jobs. An area could be available for the dryer and a washer. It was illegal to dump your grey water in your yard but with the new detergents that might have changed. Dishes are next. Then more folding.

Dr H you've been a good little home maker today! As for me, I've got a couple of job interviews tomorrow, so I was trying to get as much as I could done today around the farm. Culled two roosters this morning, just didn't have the heart to cull Jerry Lee. I might have to, depending on how the rest of the birds sex out, but for today he's got the run of the coop.

I built the ramp for the birds to get out to the pen, took down the fence to the east of the hen house and got the run set up on the grass, which is going to be really nice for the birds. They'll have lots to forage out there, and plenty of room to move the pen around. I chain sawed up the fence and it's going to make some nice firewood for the wood stove in the outbuilding where the workshop is. I picked up some really nice big shipping crates where I can put all the coop gear, so I'm getting organized as well.

Now all I've got to do is make a chicken wire run from the coop to the run, about 10-12 feet of run. I've got to make some sort of hoop arrangement or build a frame, something I can lengthen or shorten, depending on where I move the pen. Hmmmm...anyone got any ideas?

Dang the wind really picked up this afternoon and it was downright cold. C'mon where is that mild spring weather? We could use some warmth and some rain, we're down 4" around here.

Looks like everyone has been busy today! 2 more rental units to get ready for May 1st and then we should slow down to 1 per month for a couple of months. Our chicks and trukeys are busy growing-some of the turkeys are developing their gobblers. The cochins are mellow as ever and pretty much right under foot-had to put some chicken fencing up around their pen since 1 of the cuckoo Marans joined me on the outside of the pen...I stepped out and turned around and there is was looking at me

Have to leave in a bit for a 4-H dog project meeting with our oldest-she will be training our Irish Setter again this year-hopefully it goes better than last year

our dog can be very scatter brained! Keeping our fingers crossed that our foster pup has found her forever home-she is the last of the 9 pups that we are fostering and is about 22 weeks old now-time to get her a forever home!

Off to Chicago tomorrow with the oldest-she has a field trip to the Shedd so we will leave school about 6:15 am and get home at 6:15 pm. DH is in charge of the boys tomorrow-hopfully the 5 year old doesn't try and run the show

Waiting to candle the eggs in the incubator on Friday-good thing we're so busy these days-makes the days go faster!

BBCB-I think I know who you are talking about for the Ameraucana's, we had sent him an email asking about the birds he has but never heard anything back so we ended up going a different direction.

Have a good night!

Early Evening to All....KAQ sorry to hear about your X. Nothing but the Best Wishes for you and the family.

Yep I agree with FM and BCC. If you have plenty of places for the smaller ones to get away from the adult birds, otherwise you will need to wait til they are bigger.

High 5 Doc for getting the domestic stuff done. Everyone just runs the gray water out in a way folks won't notice...

just makes more sence. Some rules are just plain stupid.

H & R good luck with the 4-H project.

BBCB...good luck with the job hunt. I hope you let the culls become big enough for table fair? Prolly only takes 18 weeks, or alittle sooner for fryers. Personal choice however.

The gravel guy came today with 18 yards. I prolly only needed 14...so I still have a big pile to move yet, seeing my stupid tractor didn't work worth crap....long story, so it's a shovel and a wheel borrow, bummer. I'll have plenty of places to use the extra. I'm off to the heating pad....cheers.

Wish I was on the bus going to Shedd. Haven't been there since I was a kid. Along with the Sci. and Ind., Nat. history, and the planetarium. I'm old enough to remember when they dug a canal from lake Mich. to float in the German U boat. Today is Earth Day. I'm heading out as soon as it's warm enough to play in the garden. Have a great one!

Thanks Doc,

The quality of the jobs I'm going after isn't the best, but at this point in the economy, any fulltime job is a good one. I've been in sales for eleven years and nothing is selling right now, so good sales jobs are few and far between. Be that as it may, I just need work now.

Dr. H, now that you're retired you've got to make that Chicago trip this spring...just go down for a night with L and tour. It's worth the trip.

Cold night in the coop last night!!! Coldest one that they've seen so far, I thought I'd get out there in the morning and a few of them would be like popsicles but they are all no worse for the wear. I've got the new ameraucaunas in the kennel and I put a heat lamp right on top of the cage last night as they aren't all feathered out, I think they stayed toasty warm.

Babylady, you're going to be up to your nose in birds soon! This is a strange addiction. Like crack with feathers.
