Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Dr. H, our city ordinance reads that livestock is not allowed. I looked up the LEGAL definition of livestock and it states that any animal used for food or money is livestock. Since that would include every individual who breeds dogs for profit, and call ducks have not been used for hunting since 1937 and have no real purpose other than being cute, I think I am within the paramaters of the ordinance. If they give me grief I'll point out my findings and let them know they need to ticket every person breeding animals for profit here in town. This city has so many ordinances on the books that they do not enforce it is pathetic; I think we will be just fine as long as none of the neighbors complain.

My sister was in Liverpool day before yesterday; I must say I love modern technology! She has been downloading pics of her trip onto facebook.

Well, off to the store and then work. Seal the tile tonight and then tomorrow morning get the washing maching back up and running! I want the toilet put in tomorrow too!

BL4 sounds like you found a nice loop hole in the law and have solid ground to stand on. Good for you! Did you ever get my pm on the pie crust? Dough is just about done rising for the first time. Even used the Red Star yeast. Almost feel bad about Eing the company. Almost. Brat and burger buns coming up. Think I've done enough baking for a while. Think I'll try vacuum sealing the buns. Star just whacked me hard a couple of times for trying to check under her. She's the only one that does so. Crabby B! Dumped 2" out of the gauge this morning heard it raining a couple of times last night but didn't think we got that much. With the nice weather next week should be able to watch the garden grow. Little maters and peppers out there. And weeds. Have a great day!

Morning!

I'm new to BYC, and don't have any livestock as of current. Me and my hubby are looking to move to a hobby farm, and start our own food growing out there! We plan on chickens (eggs and meaties), Ducks (eggs and meaties), goats (milk), Sheep (wool, meat) and that's it for live stock on our lot. We then plan to buy from local farmers our angus and pig. We are sick of eating sad cow meat/chicken meat/pig meat! We want to eat happy livestock that has had good lives and respected!

So, I am on BYC, BYH and TEG all under the same username. I am looking for local farmers that I can travel too and buy the said products above until we buy our hobby farm. If you have anything, please message me

I would be happy to support you!

Okay, well my name is Desire', I'm 24 and pursuing a M.D./PhD in Pathology. I am married (newly wed) to my wonderful husband, and we have a 2 year old son together. We own our wonderful home in Waukesha, WI, and although it's a wonderful place to live our needs are expanding for more land. We own two gardens, a large one and a medium size one. We are growing a LOT of our produce for this summer/winter. I am also new to canning, and decided that is the best way for me to save our hard earned produce! It's funny to me how both me and my husband are both city people, but are now heading down the path to homesteading! It's so satisfying growing our own food in our backyard, I believe raising our own meat will be just as satisfying.

Glad to meet you all! Looking for BYC friends!

Annarie.....CONGRATS! Job well done!

Had my parents over for dinner yesterday. And played in the pool. What a nice evening it was! Still cloudy here with a little sprinkling but "this too shall pass."

Have a nice one everyone!

We always like new friends here! I am in Lake Mills and always have eggs etc for sale. Your name says you are from Big Bend though and I know there are a few members that are close to that--but your house is in Waukesha? Guess I am confused as usual...

DrH I sure hope you are right that it is going to be drier this week! My back pasture is starting to be pretty soggy...the geese and ducks are LOVING it though and I know what you mean BL4...I had just put the turkeys out and they have had rain, lightening and thunder every night! I was so worried about them that first night...you were right to bring yours in! I hope the authorities leave you alone too...my horses are considered livestock and I only SPEND money on them and have never eaten a one!

My DH picked mulberries for me yesterday while I was out at a garden meeting making my fountain etc so I need to find the parts to my Squeezo machine and deseed and get some jelly going--MMMM, so GOOD! Looks like the black caps are about ready to be picked too...after all this rain we will need to get out the winter coveralls to protect us from skeeters though!

I think the powers here should make a smiley that is doing the "WI slap dance!"

Now THAT would be a useful one!

AH--here is my son...he kept my van in town overnight and I had to call him...gotta head to Madtown to meet a CL person so I can take a look at the saddle pads she has for sale. Glad he didnt drive home--musta gotten his shoes full at Town and COuntry days last night! I swear, every time that carnival comes to town we have nothing but rain and storms! I think one year there was a tornado and they had to close the whole thing down 'cause the ferris wheel went over and the tent came down! Scary! I stay out of town during that one!

Looks like it might be getting brighter out there...maybe the rain is done for a bit? Have a great day ALL! Terri O

Edited to say: I WOULD have been first if I didnt type a book every time I talk to you guys!

I am really looking for birds right now. Chicken and duck. I don't mind driving, as I'd "stock up". I have a resource for farm fresh eggs (our babysitter!) they are soooo good

Me and DH just traveled to New Glarus to go camping and fell in love with the farmville that surrounded it! I'd gladly drive that far and then some for good poultry.

I am in Big Bend, but I say Waukesha cause most people have no clue where big bend is! Seeing as Big Bend is in Waukesha, thought it wouldn't hurt

We are about 5 minutes from Muskego, where the bad storms ripped through last week. They SAY that no tornado touched down...but between crushed houses and uprooted trees...all in a line mind you...me and DH beg to differ. We've been cleaning up our yard all week, which is sad.

I hear you on the garden thing, my garden has either been downpoured on, or in blazing hot weather. I think my tomatoes are just about ready to give up! haha. Not really. But I feel for them.

I have a contact in racine for fresh goat milk also, got her off craigslist. Gonna pick some up and make goat cheese! Yum!

They're definately NOT quieter - Call ducks are the LOUDEST breed of duck there is (they were specifically bred to "Call" after all!) - you can usually hear the females about two miles away when they get spooked or they're excited.

We're on 7 acres, and my neighbor is on something like 45 acres; his house is far enough away that we can't see it, but he says he can always tell when I'm out feeding the ducks in the morning and the evening because he can hear them. I didn't believe him until one day I was over there and, sure enough, I hear one of my ducks belt out a "QUACK QUACK QUACK QUACK!" from all the way up by our house!

Raiquee - Nice to "meet" you!

and a big Cheesehead WELCOME Raiquee! It sounds like you and yours have a great plan and a lot of work ahead of you but when it's a labor of love it ain't so bad. If you have the time spend some of it with us we'll enjoy your company. Many of your questions can be answered here by people who care about their animals. Thanks annarie for the info don't know anything about ducks but I do now. Call ducks now makes sense. TO now I have to go look at my black caps to see if their coming around. Should be within a week of yours. Going to spend the next 2 days getting the gardens weeded again then out to the woods. Might have to take a day to berry pick I did see some of the blueberries were ripe the other day. At least your DS has the sense not to drive. Didn't seperate the SLW's this morning and only got 4 eggs gonna have to do it everyday. Have a good evening!

Hello everybody.

I'm new around here and am looking forward to the meeting everyone. I live in southeastern WI and currently have about 70 chickens and a trio of rouens. A friend and I bought our first chickens last September and have been hooked ever since. We have recently acquired some show quality Dark Brahma bantams and we are having problems. We have 3 hens and a rooster who is not getting the job done. If anyone knows of anyone in Wisconsin that has a Dark Brahma Bantam rooster or cockerel i would love to pick one up.
