Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Carol--I dont think you need one each...roos arent that selective--not like geese. They have their own mates and dont you get between them! Becky, my chickens have not gone broody in the winter and they are under lights. Of course if you have some that have silkie or Polish in them they might...just make sure you keep the eggs collected and I would bet they will at least wait until the January thaw!

When I woke during the night I was so glad to NOT hear wind! My place cant take any more...one tree partially down, gutters off and hanging, my garden arch is twisted and there are countless shingles off the barn and coop! Lots of clean-up to do for sure. It is too bad the chimney didnt blow off the house...then maybe homeowners insurance would pay for my relining... On the other hand most of the leaves are off my trees so they house is much brighter inside today! I think tonight is the freeze night so I better get the rest of those house plants IN! I have kind of gotten my furniture rearranged to make room...

DrH you better take care of yourself! And Becky! Get you foot looked at! My daughter thinks she broke hers a few years ago and the doc now says it could be rebroken and maybe feel better...better to know at the beginning.

Gotta run! Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Hi Everyone,

So yesterday morning I woke up and 2 chicks had pipped 1 BCM and 1 Olive Egger. I watched all day but they didn't get much farther. Right before I went to bed the BCM had fully zipped. I woke up this morning and had one healthy happy BCM chick and my Olive Egger hatched minutes after I woke up. I left them in the incubator but the BCM had been in there for at least 12+ hours and I think it was hungry because it kept pecking the other chicks eyes and then began pecking open the other eggs that had pipped. So I decided to risk it and I open the incubator just enough to reach in and take the BCM chick out. I didn't want it to keep pecking at the other eggs/chicks and hurt them. I'm just happy that I had at least one of each hatch!

Ahh, only a very slight breeze today, what a relief. My fam up in Eagle River area is still without power; its been 3 days! Thank goodness they all have woodstoves; just no hot water for showers/laundry/dishes. Uggg.

One of my EE's laid an egg yesterday!

She's only 23 weeks, I was quite pleasantly surprised. It's a purty seafoam color. DS1 had it for breakfast this morning, they're his fave color of eggs. And to top it off, 3 eggs laid yesterday too - what good girls.

Hope no one suffered too much damage from teh storm. There was a BYCer in IN that had her coop tossed upside-down

Kept the birds in the coop and run the last two days; didn't want them blowing over to the church next door.

DrH, fish oil is so good for you. DH takes it for his eyes. He gets Nordic Naturals; pricey but the highest quality, it won't turn rancid. Hope everyone that's achey can get some relief.

Good afternoon Everyone! Didn't have time to post this morning. Went to TSC and bought a gas trash pump. Movin some water out of the crawlspace now! One sump failed it was the lowest one and so did the higher up one until unfroze the shaft. One pump wasn't enough will run the gas one until it's pretty well drained then shut it off and let the electric take over to see if it will keep up. Thanks for all the tips on the hurtin joints everyone! WCc as many nasty liquids as I've put over my gums vinegar ain't nothin! A few years ago a VA Dr. told me to start taking the fish oil for the joint pain. Wow what difference! Good for all kinds of things, eyes, arteries, colesterol. Used to burp it up when I first started takin it but not anymore. Like bittin into a fresh fish and chewin. I also self medicate 12 oz at a time dosage varies. BFF might come out bow huntin this aft. Emily his daughter told him that she ate the last dill pickle out of the jar that I sent home with him. And when he comes over he should get another jar.

She's 6 and way too cute to beat more than twice a day. One pine down in the yard and one of the tarps was blown half off of he camper and that's the only damage we have that I know of. Hope your day goes as well as mine has!

Hi all! I just had a phone call that I thought perhaps some of you might be interested in. I always get magazines to support WI Special Olympics and just found out that they have discounted rates on Mother Earth News and Hobby Farms. The prices are cheaper than the retail at 7.49 for four months and 12 issues (two years). Special Olympics gets 12% of that. If you want to help them out, their number is 800-324-8166. I have zero connection to the group other than I always donate to them.

Do any of you use the grit from Fleet Farm? I have only used the Manna Pro, but it isn't available too closely to us. I'd like to be able to get it closer, but I don't know anything about the cherry stone. Thoughts, other than the fact that I over think the simple things?

In regards to the Omega talk, I saw an ad for Omega Fields in the new Chickens magazine. I had a long chat with a woman there today and decided to order some stuff for the chickens and the dogs. After I placed my order I realized that I meant to order some stuff for us (humans

) too. LOL Ooops! They use GMO free flax and sound pretty good to me. www.omegafields.com They have a sale on the chicken stuff ($2.00 off) and the magazine had a code for a little bit more off too. CHICK0910

Hope you are all staying warm!

Kel bell I have bought the cherry stone from fleet farm and the chicken like it just fine . Bought it when I got my first bag of chicken starter I thought it was something special made out of cherry stones ! I threw some out in the run and looked at it and said that lookes just like gravel ! Read the bag and sure enough its limestone and to think I just had 20 yds of screenings spread on the driveway this summer! I was fit to be tied I felt like an idiot because my driveway is 400 ft long and all gravel so I will save the rest in case they can't get to it come winter.

As for the cats I don't know. We have 4 hawks that I see every day and a great horned owl too but I hadn't seen any cats in a couple of weeks and then there were 2 and we had 1 less chicken . We had cats here until this summer and the last couple got hit by cars but they were always bringing back rabbits and birds and chipmonks and eating them in the garage. We had more feathers in the garage with the cats around than we do with the chickens.

Wiwc glad to hear your starting to feel good again. That's a pain with the antibiotics my daughter was bitten by a wild cat last spring and within 12 hrs they had her in for emergency surgery on her hand because the tendons and joints were infected and she had a picline in for 2 weeks with iv antibiotics every 6 hrs plus all the rabies shots. Now for some reason she wants nothing to do with stray cats!

Good Chilly Morning All! Fire in the stove feels good today. Well the sump is keeping up with the incoming water don't think it'll shut off till the water in the ditch freezes. Sounds like a bath tub being filled down there. We got our own cement pond! Maybe should raise some fish.
Heading out to straighten up the garage today. BFF kicked up an 8 pointer on the way to his condo yesterday. Must have been the one I saw and thought was a 6. I put some tape on a jar of dills and marked it Emily's Pickles. She talked to me on the phone last night and asked for some more. Told her only if she was a good girl. She promised. Ha! Ya right. Normally she won't talk to me on the phone cause I gave her a fishin name years ago. I called her Fred so everytime BFF calls he asks her if she wants to talk to me she says NO he'll call me Fred.

OK I am about to tell the home health people to shove it...
I am sitting here with my niece(babysitting since she has no school) waiting for the nurse to come and do her stuff.
I call her and she tells me the infectious disease doc wants another "trough" draw...
The doctor's office didn't call, the home health care didn't call... Kept in the dark, feedin me mushrooms..
sigh..
