Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

with 8 week old chicks you are going to need to keep them warm, are they bantam or full size? you might want to keep them in garage at least till they are fully feathered, but if you heat your coop DO NOT use a heat lamp, it is not safe, why to many coops have burned down with them. a flat panel heater would be a better choice.

like this:

ACTUAL AUSTRALIAN COURT DOCKET 12659 ---
CASE OF THE PREGNANT LADY

A lady about 8 months pregnant got on a bus.
She noticed the man opposite her was smiling at her.
She immediately moved to another seat.
This time the smile turned into a grin, so she moved again..
The man seemed more amused.
When on the fourth move, the man burst out laughing, she complained to the driver and he had the man arrested.

The case came up in court.

The judge asked the man (about 20 years old) what he had to say for himself.

The man replied, 'Well your Honor, it was like this: when the lady got on the bus, I couldn't help but notice her condition.
She sat down under a sign that said, 'The Double Mint Twins are coming' and I grinned.
Then she moved and sat under a sign that said, 'Logan's Liniment will reduce the swelling,' and I had to smile.
Then she placed herself under a deodorant sign that said, 'William's Big Stick Did the Trick,' and I could hardly contain myself.
But, Your Honor, when she moved the fourth time and sat under a sign that said, 'Goodyear Rubber could have prevented this Accident!'
.... I just lost it.'

'CASE DISMISSED!!'

Now keep that smile on your face and pass it on to someone else!

how large is your coop. you might want to place hay bales in your coop if it is large, a smaller area to keep warm. your right on the edge with age, I would have a back-up place if it got real cold out, but do not bring them in a warm house, that would be to warm. do you have a heated waterer, that will help.

CFC927:welcome We are new to chickens also and this will be our first winter. We live in Denmark so we can learn together. We only have a pair of jungle fowl. We will hopefully get some layers in spring.

6x10 for 8 birds that young is large, body heat will not be enough. a smaller area is needed just till they get past that 'teen' stage 'large bird, no meat on their bones' they will need to fill out, to be able to handle the cold

That is good to know. I was worried that it wouldn't be enough room for 8 birds (though we will probably shrink it down to 7, rooster + 1 year old = trouble). We will make sure to keep it warm enough for them. Thanks for the advice!

actually a cochin roo can be a great pet, handle him a lot every time you go into the coop. I have more than 20 roo's and just one has an attitude, one of my booted bantam's (the only reason I keep him is he's a color project). my cochin roo's go to school's, farmer's markets and get handled by all ages of children, adults with out any problems
