Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

It is SO icky out!

I sold an extra drake today - to a breeder, not for eating. Didn't even have to give up one of my girls to make it a pair!

One down, four to go!

BCC - I just LOVE your Mille Fleurs! I'm planning on starting my own MFC project for the spring - starting totally from scratch with Buff Columbians and Mottleds so that I know their entire genetic backgrounds from the get-go...I'm good with duck genetics now and I have a few projects going, so now it's time to play with the chickens.

I know the F1 generation will look NOTHING like Mille Fleurs, but I'm impatient and willing to winter-brood, so I should have F2 birds hatching within a year from now.

I should get some sleep - headed down towards those of you in Madison tomorrow (any of you want some birds?

Good Blustery Morning Everyone! Pretty nasty out there. Thanks Amy for Vet thing. I use heat lamps but they are well away from anything flamable. I built a water heater out out of some good stuff I had. 12x12x12" with a light bulb under an aluminium top. Use an old 9x13 cake pan in the winter. Works pretty well! Made bread for the first time yesterday sure did miss it. Making cin/raisin bread today missed that too. Good day for it! Dang it Bigzio now I gotta make some pies too! And I suppose some egg noodles for some soup. I gotta go.

Good morning! I agree, wet, chilly and windy here=yuk! Amyable--what I use is the waterer that I built out of a cookie tin, There is quite the thread on here about it. It was a piece of cake to make and I am planning another one for my bachelor pad water for this year. I picked up the tin at St Vinnies yesterday! You have to get the tins NOW 'cause now is when they have the big ones out for Christmas cookies and stuff. Last year I ended up using a Trivial Pursuit tin...it was the only one that I could find that was deep enough. It worked great all winter! I just put my 7 gal plastic waterer on it and it stayed fine for the whole winter! I like this set up 'cause it is no change for the chickens. The water doesnt get everywhere like it used to with an open pan either! (I used to use a Fortrel pan and crack the ice out of it every morning) When I used a heated font base my electric bill really jumped. I havent tried the heated unit from F&F though. Man, just the thought of having to deal with freezing is giving me a headache!
GC--I am pretty far from you but I hae plenty of hatching eggs that you can have. Actually I have just been breaking them and feeding them back because I am medicating the flock to try to get rid of some "sniffles" before winter. It seems like since I closed up the coop a bit I have been dealing with some issues. It would be an interesting experiment to see if the meds hinder the hatchability at all...just send me a PM if you want to experiment with mine.
My new dog is rolling on the floor on her back...she is quite the character! I think that I will be able to let her loose pretty soon when I am out with her. I really wanted to go to the dog park again today...I think you have the right idea Dr H--stay in and BAKE! We are meeting friends in Milwaukee today to have dinner at Conejitos downtown. It is an Old Mexican place that we used to frequent when we lived there. Cant wait--MMMMM! Plus I get to see my oldest friend! (not age-wise; year wise

Well--I suppose I could think about making the chickens a cake...yup, went through the cupboards and there were a bunch of outdated cake mixes with webs in them so I make them up with water and egg (no oil) and set the pan in the coop for them to snack on in the morning when they wake up! I am NOT making them coffee however! Perhaps I will make an apple pie too? That might be pretty yummy...have a great day! Terri O

BCC, how many gallons is that waterer? I couldn't find it on their website...is it for poultry or livestock in general?

I was concerned about the possibility of fire, but the lamp is the same one I used in the brooder (red bulb in reflector.) Is it still ok to use that for future chicks?

3 gals, its a normal looking poultry font. (heat lamp) with chicks you are watching it a lot you have it in a protected space, when used as a heat source its up high where it can get bumped, splashed, its just not a good idea, if you really want something like that use a heat emitter, safer

Been out in the mornings and evenings feeding my client's horses.. he is in Oregon state for the military for 4 days.. blech weather..
Had the dogs in their widdle doggy coats this A.m....

Client is head over heels in love with a little buckskin half arab colt... the lady selling them was kind enough to bring them down from near Green Bay... He had me call her to get more info on colt, and another, I want, that she advertised
she is in Waukesha.. she and hubby are pushing to sell the horses NOW.. will deliver.. blah blah blah...

UM.. he is on the WEST COAST... and I told her the night I called.. he has a "process" he likes to go through.. He likes to think about it, then take it (the idea or thought) out to dinner, then babysit it for the
weekend...think about it some more.. then come to a decision... I told her this..
And in one ear and out the other.... I said again.. he is in OREGON... till sunday night.. and then he works.. till 5:30 ish, every night during the week.
IT will be next weekend... like it or not...
I can come down and take pics, and handle them.. give him a report on them....

ACK.. I wish people would listen.

LOL I know the feeling quite well. My husband works on the west coast right now. He has since July '09. People just don't get it when it isn't something they are used to in their life. I guess the other part is probably that a lot people are so focused on what they want that they probably aren't even listening to you anyway. *sigh* At least that is what I gather from a lot of conversations. LOL I don't think it is intentional, most of the time.

I bought a couple of those waterers from Fleet too. I think I am just an idiot because I can't figure out how to turn the darn thing upright without making a mess. I don't want to turn it over in the house and splash water and ACV all over the floor and I don't want to turn it over in the coop and wet all the bedding. For now I am just turning it over outside of the coop and very carefully walking it inside the coop to hang up. Any secrets to this? I much prefer the design of the regular waterers with the little cap that you take off after it is hanging. I think I can make a mess out of just about anything.

Do any of you live anywhere near Sparta or Tomah? We are planning on heading out that way soon to check out some land there. I have only been to the area once for a day and really, we were in La Crosse, so that probably doesn't even count. I am trying to make a list of things to check out and questions to ask.

your going to get a little leaking no matter what, but if you have the hole where the water comes out on the oppisite of the flip you loose very little water, plus do it quick.

Feeling Like Fall To All....Thanks for the tip on the fleet waterer BCC, I don't think our big store in C-ville has those. I'll check it out tomorrow. Hate the thought of frozen water

Suzie baked a fresh loaf today. Half whole wheat and white flour with honey...poor heel did'nt live long...Yep i'm with you Doc...fresh pumpkin pie cooling now...this is the time of year to enjoy great home cooked food. Really wish we had a wood cook stove, it would fit our lifestyle for sure.
Need to sight in a couple guns yet before the opener. I always borrow my one bro one. I prefer the scopes on the slug guns. Makes life easy and fun and up close.
I've heard of folks that place a 12x12 ceramic tile on the metal heaters to be able to place plastic fonts on them with no problems. I personally haven't tryed it though. Mine is still in the box .
No big game tomorrow. The pack has a buy. Maybe me and suzie will get off the hill and take a ride for a change, seeing the flock will be under lockdown if the weather stays crappy.

Ahhhhh.....thanks! You know, I never even bothered to look and see where exactly the water flowed out on that one.

Today, I tried to do it quick and ended turning the thing loose and dumped the entire thing out.

As I was walking back to the house to refill it, I saw my daughter in the window laughing at me.

Bigzio, that tile idea sounds like a good one. I may have to try that out if I keep dumping water with this one.

Good Morning All! Up way too early! Made a couple of loaves of cin/raisn bread and a cake yesterday. Youngest stopped in with her Bo for a couple of hours. I see more of her now that she's hooked up with him, that's a good thing! Bigz I would love to have a wood cook stove too! Man that brings back the memories. Like the idea of the ceramic tile! Don't know what I'll do today but I'm sure I'll find something. Gonna watch Bears/Queens at noon. It was snowing earlier
