Enjoy the warm up while it lasts. Susie

TO, be careful around your pets with that poison. It is called Bromethalin and effects the CNS by inhibiting the production of ATP (and does other things as well). What concerns me is the toxic level of a dose to a dog or cat; dog it is 2mg per lb, cat it is 1 mg per lb...... I hope you are using gloves and have a mask on when you use it since it will affect you as well and is easily absorbed through the skin.......

Ok, off the soap box....

Raiquee, my in-laws have a massive garden and have had good luck with the yellow watermelons, and my neighbor's friend grows the BEST muskmelons. I wish I could plant a nice big garden here, you guys make me jealous!

I hope everyone enjoyed Christmas and is looking forward to New Year's. I am happy to have the next week off from both jobs. A mini vacation!!!!

Better get to bed so I can enjoy my sleeping in tomorrow!

Good Morning Everyone! So far, I was a very naughty boy yesterday.

Ended up having to have L come and get me at the BFF's seems I had a few too many to be driving. Not worth the risk. Ya something would have ate well off that doe. BFF has had big cat tracks in his yard twice in the last 2 weeks. I was amazed at how big they were. He's going to borrow a trail cam to see if he can get a pic of it. If he does I'll post it. We didn't lose as much meat off that doe as we thought we would. We did pull a chunk of auto trim out of one hind qtr though. Oh Susie J that's just terrible especially at this time of year. Hope your DH will find something quickly! Raiquee supper sounds yummie! I've never had any luck with mellons of any kind here but then again I've never had them properly placed. Becky it pains me to buy jewelry so I don't

Enjoy you quiet time. TO that sounds like it's going to hurt for quite awhile. Hope you heal fast! H&R didn't realize you were that close to the split. Next time through I'll just lay on the horn. Good luck on the hatch! BCC you are sooo mean!!!! When I read that the first thing in my head was a house chicken/chickens. Remind me come spring I might just take you up on that. Yes the seed catalogs are coming fast and furious now, it's terrible! Looks like we're in for a skating ring the next couple of days. Don't think it got below freezing last night woke up at 1:30 just a sweatin away, too much wood in the stove. Coffee is kickin in better go do all the things that didn't get done yesterday plus today's list. Hope you all have great day! And be carefull on those roads!

We had good lukc with started watermelon plants (from jungs) the past few years. They are the smaller round ones.
So what woudl you suggest to put in the garden for the chickens to enjoy? We always have penty of cherry tomatoes that they will get... but what else would you plant if you could? We have a decent sized garden space and I need to figure it all out.
We always plant lots of tomatoes for canning spaghetti sauce. And pickles/zuccs for pickles..but what else!

lettuce, spinich, any kind of greens. I keep greens going all summer long they even love it if is bolted, they ony thing I don't give the chickens is the cabage, kohlrobi, hard veg. the rabbits get those

Mornin' all! Sitting here with a cup of joe, and a terrible dry cough. Trying real hard not to gag myself. DH wanted to have New Years here and I shot that down real quick. DH's friends are young (22-23) and like to drink WAY too much, and they don't own a dang thing that they care about so they break our stuff! Last year was a huge hole in our garage door, and then they stole some liqour!

Of course they all don't work so you can't ask them to repair it. So I said no way, go to your other friends. Hubby is the only mature one in that group, I swear. They will learn the hard way I guess.

Well I got another day of reading cooking blogs, planning the garden, and moping around the house today. DH is out hunting.

BL4) Did you like the yellow watermelon? I didn't really. I found its taste not good. Maybe it was just that melon tho. Why can't you have a garden? Limitied space? Not enough time? Can't you have a bucket garden?
smile.png
I had awesome luck with my herbs in a too tiny pot. In fact, they hit first frost, died off and hubby brought it in the house and they regrew! Yup! I have fresh rosemary, parsley, oregano, and thyme in Dec! My basil was gone tho

Boo.

I am going to order some seeds today, probably some carrots. Buy a little here and there. Gotta get my spring seeds in first though, that's what i'll need first. Carrots and a Mesculin mix. I am putting in buttercrunch lettuce, mesculin mix, watermelon radishes, carrots (scarlet nantes), aruguala, spinach. Altho the last two are in the Mes mix, I like to just have spinach and aruguala seperate. I was gonna do onions as well this year, but think I'm gonna pass (other than spring onions).

Any suggestions for any other spring garden stuff?

Good morning all...can you see me waving in the fog???
Raiquee you are killing me with the talk of all those greens! I have a salad garden very near the house and I plant all that stuff in it along with beets just for the greens. The big beets get planted in the sand part of my big garden where they grow pretty well. I also planted some watermelon last year and I have one left to throw to the chickens...we had ENOUGH melon from just 3 plants! First time in ages though. I dont really like it much so I dont plant it every year. I did get some watermelon jelly in the canning swap this year though....I will have to pop that open and see what it is like; perhaps I WILL be planting it again?
Very lazy today...cant seem to get in touch with Bernie's sister--I wanted to talk to her but maybe her surgery is today already? We need to do something with her meds so I need to call the doc and get him in touch with the hospital cause she is all out of refills! Brother....
The Rampage that I have used BL4 is in place packs so I havent had to worry about touching the stuff. The new pail is in block form though so I guess I will have to don some gloves if it is as absorb-able as you say. I am kinda bad with that stuff actually--no gloves when I play with the DE or the SEVIN for the chickens either....better pick some up!
Maybe my coffee is starting to kick in too DrH...I think I feel a touch of energy coming on...no wait--it's gone! Oh well! I think my son was a bad boy last night too...(he is 22 Raiquee--I know what you mean by irresponsible!) there are Coke cans all over my living room and my bottle of Captain's looks suspiciously low! Good for you for not driving DrH--that is bad news! My son will be a very sorry boy as he doesnt have a driver's license until March now...and that will follow him for a very long time I fear!
OK--I better get myself down to see what those puppies are up to! Enjoy all the ice! I asked for some of those Yaktracks for my birthday--I am so tired of slipping on the ice down by the ducks and geese! They are soooo sloppy with their water. Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) I "won" the auction for quail eggs! Gotta find out what I need to do now! Babies in my future!

Can't see ya TO but I'm feeling it! Getting a little light rain here it's knocking down the snow. The kids are all outside enjoying the warmth and the treats. Got pretty well caught up already. 1 more load of wood to bring in for the cold spell headed in. Forgot to mention that yesterday I left the appartment door open while doing chicken chores as normal and Peatwo came out and mounted one of the older hens. Buster was not too happy with that but all he did was back him into a corner with his sideways dominate dance. Didn't kick his butt like I figured he was gonna. Hope they can learn to get along because I HAVE to keep them both. BFF called this morning and said we got 28lbs of very clean grind out of that doe. He steaked up the loins and major roasts the rest went to grind. Not bad for a busted up deer. All this talk of gardens, venison, and chickens just reinforces my beliefs in real food! I'm so glad that there are so many that are getting back to it. I'm constantly thinking about how I would or will be doing things to live life the right way. I think that someday I'll end up living in a shack up north next to the river with my chickens and my garden with L by my side in a pair of bibs. And maybe a pitch fork. Didn't get my indoor greens box done this year, has anyone ever tried to grow lettuce, spinach type plants indoors in the winter? The older I get the more I detest store bought crap. Buster is wearing himself out running back and forth from the woodshed to the coop making sure his harem is protected. Wow raining pretty good now.

Raiquee, I like to say I live on a postage stamp; your typical 60x120 lot. I have herbs growing in my front flower beds and pot a few tomatoes and I have a kiddie pool that I plant with carrots and beets but nothing really produces much. I really do not have room for anything else. I would like to have grapes and raspberries, black raspberries, apples..... all that jazz. Plus a garden big enough to feed a family of 6 needs to be bigger than a few buckets. Heck we have a hard enough time keeping the darn lawn going!!!!

That yellow watermelon my in-laws grew was really good! The kids have requested they grow it again this year. I can find out the name of it if you like, it is possible you did get one that was just off (like you can sometimes with other fruits).

Not much else going on here, just wet and foggy......

DrH) haha I think it's so funny you were a naughty boy! How's your hangover doing?
lol.png
I heard you can grow them in a sunny window, so why not give it a shot? I think espessially things like the micro greens (the mesculin mix) it would be really easy. I may try it next winter. Like I said, my herbs are growing great, and I don't even have them in a sunny window. I am surprised they are doing well.

TO) Hey have you ever put carrots in that sandy kitchen box? I am thinking they'd do real well! Espessially in the fall, and if you dump hay over them you got an outside cellar for them!
smile.png
I am going to work a part of my bed up with sand this spring to put carrots/radishes/etc. We had good luck with radishes the year before last, but I think we'd get bigger ones if the soil was more loomy.

Bl4) I understand how you feel. We are on a "postage stamp" too, not sure on exact measurements, but it's a normal house lot. We are heavily shaded in the front by maples, and we have two large hills so erosion is terrible. The front is pretty much useless. One side of the house is full shade, the other is full sun and we have a garden thats...hm...3foot x 20 or so long. That was put in new last year. In the backyard we have our big garden or the "weed" garden as I call it. It's maybe 12x22. It's mainly shaded by our neighbors huge annoying oak tree that I want to cut down in the middle of the night. Despite that, I have a lovely strawberry patch, raspberries, blueberries, a grape vine, a rhubarb, an out of control sage plant, and chives growing in there. Hubby wants to plant the rest of the area with flowers, I am still fighting to plant it with more food. lol. Then also in the backyard we have an elderberry hedge, and a huge pear tree.

I'd also love to have more fruit trees and more garden space but I gotta work with what hubby gave me! Can you imagine me when I get turned loose on several acres? Sheesh!

Speaking of hubby I had him pick up some hay for the duckies pen (we got some for free from the sitter, broken bales) and we padded the heck out of their pen. Well I looked out our bedroom window to see him chasing them and then he snatched the female. He was sitting there, holding her, petting her and talking to her. lol. I opened the window and said "Whatcha doing to my ducks?!" He said "Just checking to see if their were meatier yet!" lol. Liar. He was probably telling her she better lay some eggs come spring tho. Khaki's are suppossed to be one of the best egg layers. My male is just gorgeous. My scovie, I have no clue what it is (male/female). All I know is its a chunker! I will try and snap a picture of them in their pen tomorrow.
