Vey cute Hurley,I see you use egg cartons for hatchin. I've been thinking of trying that it must work ok for you eh? Are these going to be some of them silvers that you posted? Beautiful birds. Mike

Yes, I'm at a loss as to what to call them right now. Need to get photos of all of them and beg help in opinions on the genes in the mix.

The roosters are the ones I posted, the light one I've been told is a silver birchen cuckoo (split to gold). Don't believe I got an official opinion on the other guy, but he's a cuckoo at least and they thought he had some gold leakage as well, so perhaps a silver cuckoo black? The girls are all blue in appearance to me, 2 with lighter heads than the others, a bit of pattern in the hackles that makes me think they are birchen based as well.

A fun group to play with, for sure.

Oh, on the egg cartons, well, it's my first time hatching, but it seems to work ok. I've got them in a half of the top of a paper carton right now, so they can have a little wiggle room if they need it. Kind of playing it by ear this time around. I mostly chose this route to make cleanup easier and to keep the eggs from crashing and banging into each other as I have some in there with a different hatch date. (One incubator to incubate until day 18, the other for 18 and after with no rocker.)

The 2nd egg to pip has made another little pip, so hopefully it's starting to zip. Can't wait! "Mother Hen" chick has been scooting around the incubator, but prefers her perch on top of the others.

Mag) yeah I checked it out right after you posted! It was neat, but like bl4 said, it's all homes on the North western side of the state. The closest by me is Madison, which is 3 hours away from where I would be working lol. Extending my commute by double. Darn!

Hurley keep us posted on these as they are very interesting. They look great. I was thinking of trying the egg carton for hatching I think it would be much cleaner.

BCC I'm happy for you ordering the lavs. They will be awesome. Congrats.

Good Frosty Morning Everyone! Didn't take long to miss those warmer temps. ODrH that's one cute chick there. Hope the rest of the hatch goes well! Raiquee hope your feeling better soon! The Badge game was disappointing hope the Pack take the Bears to the wood shed today. Looks like their favored to win. Was very happy yesterday getting 8 eggs out of the now 11 hens. Put a pail in the appartment with straw, the straw got kicked out and Btwo layed on the floor. What are you gonna do? Darn kid! Had venison chili dogs for supper last night they were real tasty! Maybe can coerce L into a batch of her nacho's for the Pack game. Have a good one! Stay warm!

Good morning! Another coooold one out there this AM! Did anyone else notice that we are almost to 5000 posts here? Yeah! I dont think we will ever catch up to the Okies but we are doing fine I say...Raiquee--I am praying for you to feel better and to find, like and be able to afford a house this year! I know how we felt when we finally got out of the apartment scene and got our first house. It was heaven! One word of caution I have...wait a little before you get your berries, asparagus, apples and perennials planted...we went gung ho that first summer and ended up selling the place in 3 years, just when all the stuff was really established! I was so sad to leave it all...and I havent been able to get asparagus going for sh*% at this place! My new patch just might be the one to make it though.

After trying for 22 years it better!
BCC--I cant wait to see the birds you get out of those eggs you ordered...I have heard a lot about that line...all good! H&R--what about those last 3 eggs? anything? We are still waiting on pics of the new ones ya know

BL$--I had forgotten about those calls...my memory is SHOT! When I get them from you I am going to time it with some eggs from my neighbor...do you know if they hatch their own? Annarie...where are you when I need you? Do they go broody? I HAVE to get my back room cleaned up and redone so I can get my incubator running....it seems like that is all anyone is talking about. HATCHING

I have the bug...just not the room!
Took the Dal/Lab puppies to Petsmart yesterday. THey got to stay and I took home a Mom and 3 four week old pups. I will try to get a pic of them later...right now they look like little bears!
OOOOH--DH just brought me a piece of cheesecake...and a fresh cuppa. Definitely not my best effort on the cheesecake. The oven is off temp. AGAIN and I had to mess with it to even get in done! Ugly but still tasty!
I think I found a dresser in the barn that I am going to use as a brooder for the quail...I have to dig it out and then do some mods but it seems I am much better at modification than building from the ground up...just take a look at my new coop....it is still just the floor and one wall--now covered with snow and ice! Yup-much better at modification! Speaking of: with that wind yesterday my "storm window coop" just kept blowing over! I must have stood those windows back up 5 times while I was out there...I guess I had better get the tarp over the top and sides today; hopefully it is not as windy as it was! THe sun feels warm through the window...but I am betting that coveralls are still needed.
Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Dang TO, I was going to shoot for 5000, but I'll settle for 4999.....

The calls DO go broody and are great mothers (from what I have read). You will have a better hatch rate from mom than the incubator! When you bake your cheesecake, what temp and how long? When I bake mine, I have a pan of water on the bottom rack and bake for 50 min then shut the oven off but leave the cheesecake in the oven while it cools down. Perfect every time.

When we get our place I plan on sitting there for a good 10 years........

Off to Fleet Farm, everyone enjoy this beautiful sunny morning!

Good Sunday Morning All.... Had 0 on the outside thermometer when I got up, so Suzie and I skipped church today and kept the old truck resting in the cold.
Checked the coop temps just before 9AM, the new insulated coop was a balmy 20 degrees, and my older coop without insulation was 10 degrees. I added a whole bale of straw to the older coop yesterday so it seemed toasty even at that temp.

Thanks again for sharing the pics....very nice!
Yep the Badgers had their chances to win. Games like that you gotta put points on the board and make field goals inside 40 yards.
I'm with you Doc and hope the Pack can tame the Bears! That would be sweet, eh! It's about time some team shows them what a loss feels like!

Stay Safe....Go Pack! ~ bigzio
