Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yup Bigz throwin another log on over here. Didn't get any eggs early this morning there were 5 hens in the boxes. But just went out and there were 7 and Btwo was sittin. Have been running the heat lamps 24/7 but no white lights. Left the coop door open a tad and most came out +5 now. Made great strides on the tax/flood crap this AM still some more to do before hunger and aggrivation take over. Think I'll be going into their [IRS] office with a box load and let them figure it out. The sump discharge hose froze this morning so I plugged in the heat tape I attached to it, should be thawed pretty soon. Yup still pumpin water. Haven't checked out the vid yet maybe after my crap. Stupid people P me off!

MMM love me some deer heart! I sauted some mushrooms and onion with some venison steaks last night.

Was -23 at 3:30 this morning. Poor chickens were secretly flipping me the bird.

This morning they got, oatmeal, green beans, and some boiled eggs with shells. All 4 eggs were frozen and cracked this morning, so I just made those up and gave back to them.

Planning the garden today. This will be my first year. I am excited. We have a 20x40 area....... any ideas?

We want to do,
cherry tomatoes
romas
brandywines
Green beans
Sugar Snap Peas
Carrots
Onion

maybe some

, lock down is today for us, we have some Andalusian eggs, Welsummer eggs, a Partridge Bantam Cochin egg and one Ameraucana egg that are due Monday! The other 11 Andalusians that hatched Jan 1st are moving out to our heated garage today so they can have more room.

I cant wait to start hatching. We are going to order our incubator with the next paycheck. We will get be getting a Brinsea Octagon20 with auto turner.

I have 26 chicks coming from McMurray feb 7th. Here is my question.

I have a brooder that is 4'x3.5'x3'

How long will the chicks be able to stay in there before they are too crowded? a week? 2? 4? i have never brooded babies before. All the chickens we have bought were 5-6 weeks old, and it was july!

Any ideas?

Yup, tall stuff on the north side. There are books on companion planting; carrots like tomatoes, beans hate onions, etc. I found a garden guide chart online. You can lay it out however you like, and see what works and what you like and don't like. You can always adjust next year.

Rows are easiest to maintain. Raised beds are great but require lots of wood. Melons and corn need lots of room, strawberries are perennials and need their own space.

You will soon wish for twice the garden area, once you get going there is never enough dirt!

Thanks for the help. I know 20x40 will probably not be big enough. We will have to thin out more trees to allow enough sun the way it is. But hubby says start small and not to overwhelm myself. So we will see.

Thanks for that garden chart, that will help me attempt a couple layouts. I was going to plant the corn on the south side, so i'm glad I asked! If we do corn at all, spacing rows 3 ft apart is gonna take up alot of room by the time all 4 rows would be planted.

Maybe skip the corn this year? Its just the 2 of us. My parents will only eat a couple tomatoes, carrots and some beans. They would eat corn if we planted it though.

My sister like peppers and cucumbers, but dont have those on the list..... she has her own little 9x9 garden in the city though.

Mag) Skip corn if you can, unless your planting a decent amount I find corn a waste of precious garden space. But thats just me. Plant tallest things on the North side, plant your toms all in the same area!! I was dumb and planted them interchangably throughout my garden. Well now figuring out rotation is a pain in the butt! Plant your carrots and onions together, only because you need a looser substrate for them to grow nicely. Lighten up a clay-ish soil with sand if possible. No advice on peppers, I have no luck with them. On cukes, do a teepee type pole, otherwise they will latch on to everything in your garden. Run them up something and you should be fine.

Well I have been at the new Columbia St Mary's on the east side of MKE. Their lab is simply HUGE compaired to my lab out in Sheboygan. I worked in setting up micros yesterday, today I worked in Biosafety level 2, which is working with TB/Acid fast bacterium/fungus. I had fun in there. Handled a lot of poop!

Yup, my job is smelly. I love it though! I still am getting lost in the lab, it's that large. It's neat working in a larger lab, but I miss the personalization of my smaller lab. Knowing everyone and able to work within other departments easily. You can't do that at the bigger labs, which is disappointing.

I am nervous but excitied for my interview on Tues, mainly because the lab supervisor that wants me to work there, is interviewing me!!

I didn't know that. So, if that doesn't get me the job, well I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. My friend had her interview there today, I hope her the best but I hope she finds somewhere else!
