Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning Everyone! All this garden talk has me going too. Have to agree on not planting corn, too much room needed and peas are delish but find that they also don't produce enough to justify the the space. From south to north rows planted east/west I put in spinach/lettuce, carrots, onions, peppers, peas, pole beans, then cucs. When the cucs start to vine out I train them away from the beans. Have a seperate garden for tomatoes, dill, and cilantro. Everything is shortest to tallest except for the cuc's. Replacing the peas with broccoli this year. Then I add chicken poop year round. I lay down material between the rows to help with the weeds. I would use straw but the stuff I get still has the seeds in it. Peas and corn are readily availible from the farm stands. Might plant some peas in the fence line just for salads. Be sure and put up a fence the chickens/deer will tear it up otherwise. Amy our hens are doing well too think just because the slws are just starting is the reason. WCc happy day after! Rai hope your interview works out! I'm making B'fast better get it going! Enjoy your day!

Good Morning everyone so far have 14 chicks out and 7 more are pipping

Have a great day everyone. I'm off to make breakfast pancakes and porkys!!

Good morning! Well, almost afternoon I guess *blushing* Nothing much going on around here...DH on his 'puter and me on mine...so sunny outside but only 12! It had been really nice in the coop when I open it though...I had 39* last week! When it was -7 it was 20 in there. Must be from the sheer volume of birds-they are pretty crowded but at least they go outside. I took the hatch door off so they can go into the room outside the people door and use some of that space. I will be enclosing that from the run-in this early spring to give them the room AND the safety. It is open above the wall and stuff could certainly crawl up the wall and get into the coop thru the hatch door! I think most things are sleeping and the goats/sheep on the other side of the wall must keep the night critters at bay. I havent had any problems this winter...

hoping that this will continue until I get it closed off! I would hate to lose this flock!
They had oatmeal with raisins and oranges before bed last night...they really like that! I put a 9x13 pan in there that was full to the top, went to feed horses and goats, came back and it was GONE! I mean totally empty! I am cooking some more for them right now...they will welcome it at lunch!
My ewe was still down yesterday...she is eating and drinking so I am hoping that she will recover. As long as she has a good attitude I will continue to feed her and care for her. When sheep decide that they will die there is NOTHING that you can do to convince them otherwise! They are kind of frustrating animals to have and if I didnt love lamb so much.....
I need to go and find something to eat...maybe I will cook some oatmeal for me too!
Thanks for that garden site Amyable...I got it figured out!
Yeah...dont bother with corn! It is better if you plant it in a cube than in rows--it will fertilize better. So if you do...the only other advice I have is to make sure you have enough space all around your plants. You can crowd them a little in the row like when planting seeds. But those little plants really get BIG and then you have a mess when trying to harvest...I also seem to have better luck with keeping the twining and vining stuff in another garden. THose kinds of things get really wild!
Terri O--who is looking VERY forward to gardening season!

I just went out to check the chickens and what did I find at my feet

needless to say he's now in possum heaven!! Chicks are still hatching with only two left to go.

It seems my thermo IS off 7-10*. Neighbor Donny said he had -22 the other morning I had-12. Think it's too close to the old windows on the back porch where it's about 150 million* with the wood stove. Just went out and got the eggs again all 6 poults are laying and got 3 from my 5 sex links. TO hope your ewe recovers! Must be frustrating to try your best then lose one. We all know how that feels. cp sounds like your having a very succesful hatch! Congrats! I've been taste testing some jars of pickles to take along for the game tomorrow. Found 2 qts of super sweet pickle spears that I made in crocks 2 years ago. Yup their good! Pickled peppers, Yup their good! dilly beans, Yup their good! Dills oh my their good! Taking eggs for them too! L's making a home made chili cheese dip and taking her salsa, along with making fresh tortilla chips. Their making shreaded turkey sammies and oinion soup taters. My cousins husband sent an E with pics of various cheerleaders and the one of the packers was one of dogs with hillbilly teeth in. I E'd him back and said I guess you didn't read the Monday headlines it says "Pack send Bears into hibernation!" This is going to be a better game than the Superbowl!

WOW cp that had to freak you out. I had my own critter problem too. Yesterday I saw a vole in the crawlspace area. Today I'm standing the kitchen and hear a noise like water drippin. [I hear that a lot, usually in my sleep] Here he was eatin food out of the cat bowl. Put on some gloves and chucked him outside. 10 minutes later same noise same danged fur bearin critter, chucked it futher outside. 10 minutes later he's back in the cat bowl. He's not comin back any more. He had options and chances, chose wrong.

Thanks everyone for the Gardening advise. I am taking your words for it, and not planting corn. Maybe I will do cucumbers in its place. I can always make pickles right?!

Wow, a possum, that must have freaked you out! Hope the chickens are ok.
