Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning everyone, Happy Easter, got to sleep in late, well late for me anyhow, Checked on the chicks, all were sleeping, Bianca still has pasty butt, I will run to the store later and get her some plain yogurt. Poor little girl. When I removed her all her brooder buds got all excited until I put her back, then they all had to check on her. The golden comets are getting bigger. Suprisingly you can see the daily growth. Well I have to make easter dinner today for everyone so I better get going

Hurley, Looks great

good Easter Morning..

Dave don't worry too much about the chick. All chicks do not grow at the same rate.. so do not compare this one to that.. It'll drive you crazy..

Carol, mitered corners on those doors,,, nice.. do you use screws for fasteners? I use the square drive green deck screws. they are a bit more expensive, but they are stronger and they do not "bleed" like the black drywall screws do..

today is going to be the last day for the wheaton americauna hatch.. after the initial burst of hatching, the secondary hatch yielded 12 more.. and today there are 6 more gleaned from their.. we ended up with 46 total.. not bad for shipped eggs, or any others either.. only about a half dozen eggs left over..

I transferred the Javas and Deleware eggs yesterday.. they did not candle too well.. I tossed a lot of the clear ones and set quite a few that looked ifie..ifey, iffey, iffie.. there is another one of those words that I don't believe is really a word.. LOL

today is going to be the last day for 11 roosters.. Annie caught a couple more that were running loose, also.. Nobody seemed too intrested in "pretty" roosters.. too bad, so sad, goodbye roos..

Thanks Jim and Ha ha. Boys found their easter baskets in record time. Visited the neighbors coop yesterday. She is moving it. She just has a kennel and in her run it is a green 3 ft fence, she has had it for 2 years and lost one chicken to the neighbors dog when it was free range so it is nice to know that we don't have tons of predators. I am still building mine with hardware cloth, Better safe than sorry. I finished the windows with hardware cloth and also buried around the foundation and the crawlspace is covered, next weekend, the run and then siding, It is supposed to rain all week, but hopefully it will be hit and miss so I can do something out there.

It has been 2 hours since I checked on Bianca. I need to add vinegar to their water.

happy easter

Hi FordMommy!

I'm new to the group, and I'm a duck mom....so I'd love seeing duckling pictures if you can get some! Don't you love their tiny peeps and the little grunty noises they make in their sleep?
Happy Easter!

DrH: I hid eggs in the nests, too; ducks didn't seem to notice them and it was an easy way to get my daughter out to collect their eggs this morning!

Happy Easter Everyone!! I hope y'all have a wonderful day!

Dave-you can also add sugar to the chicks water. This really helps to perk up the punky ones and helps the others perk up from the stress of shipping/hatching and getting used to new digs. If you have vitamins and electrolytes, you can add them to the sugar water. I hope Bianca comes around. Sometimes on the little ones the whole experience in really stressfull and it takes a little longer for them to sleep it off and come around. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her and hope that before you know it, she'll be buzzing around the brooder!

Terri-Yes! You do need Orloffs in your flock/herd!! (Everyone needs Orloffs!! hehehehe) If you go over to the Feathersite they have some info on them. Mine are of the Spangled variety. They are an extremely cold hardy rare utility/dual purpose heriatge breed with muffs and beards. They lay a big brown egg, and are a little on the dominant side. Not mean, but they stand up for themselves. They can make for very friendly birds and I have been working with mealworms to make mine more friendly. In the first three days the chicks learned the words "babies" and "treats". They also know that sound of the mealworm container being opended. I will say though on the down side they are not a production egg laying breed. Back in the day they used to lay well, but when they started to become scarce, the egg counts and laying time declined a little. They are slow to mature and the egg laying cycle slows down earlier in life then production egg breeds. I still love them though. They are very unique looking and they look like baby hawks right now! They are not recogonized in the APA Standard (dropped in 1921), but I will show mine anyway. The judges love to see them and people are just facinated by an adult bird. I get a lot of "Oh my! Orloffs! I've always wanted to see one in person!" "Wow! You have Orloffs? That is so cool! Wherever did you get them?" and my favorite- "How much for your Orloffs?"

Fordsmommy-congrats on the baby ducks! Hope you get the hatch you wanted!

Hurley-nice brooder. Can I be next on your brooder making list???

waiting for the ham to get done, everything else is ready except for the guests. took some more pictures. it is funny how you get attached to a living creature. So far Bianca is my favorite, she is eating and drinking and pooing so hopefully she is ok, she just sleeps a lot, I put in apple cider vinegar in their water, so hopefully that helps with pasty butt. I know it has another name but I keep forgetting it. Getting old

here are the latest photos http://s51.photobucket.com/albums/f381/Pezguy81/bianca/
