TO if I had known you were going to be up in Appleton I would have told you to stop by and check out the rest of the ducks. Apparently the black one (Jules) has decided to go broody on me. I was not sure at first but she is plucking down from her belly so I am thinking she is going to do this for the long haul. I went in the housing section of the pen today and went through the eggs she was sitting on, pitched all the cracked ones, removed the dirty ones, and just plan took out enough eggs until she was sitting on a reasonable number (I thought 7 was a good amount). Now I guess we will just sit back and see what happens. I do not have my incubator going or I would have put the rest of the eggs into it just to see if they were still viable. She had so many eggs under her I do not think it would be possible for any of them to be good yet.......

Easter was wonderful here. Made cheesecake, apple pie, and another lemon meringue pie to go along with roast leg of lamb. Yummy! Still stuffed! Had a wonderful time visiting with my big bro, his family, and my sis and her family, all jammed into my moms house. Did all the fun Easter things with the kids; colored eggs, did the egg hunt, ate lots of chocolate and of course a ton of peeps! I am so happy the weather finally decided to cooperate! I could have had it a few degrees warmer but I'll take what I can get!

It will be nice to have a day off tomorrow and not have to do anything.

Anyway; say goodnight Gracie.....

Going to get another electric pump today really need to get that water down in the crawlspace from the last rain. Plus pick up a new condenser and points for the tractor. It wouldn't start yesterday to go to the woods. Traced everything back to a cracked coil. Good neighbor Donny had a new one that was just laying around then no still spark, checked the points. Can't believe it even ran! Has to be the condenser. Also going to call the owner of the field next to us to see if their willing to do something about this dead end ditch next to the house that is causing our water woes. If not I'm taking it to the next level. Sounds like everyone had a very good Easter!

L's pizza always seems to get better everytime she makes it. Bigz good job on the feed bet it was very rewarding! Cute easter baskets ODrH! Hope they didn't eat all those those peeps. Better get a chunk of wood in the stove. Brr! Have a good one!

Good morning to all! Thought it was going to be sunny today...maybe not! Some bad news on the chick front here. There was one that was between the dish and the side of the tank. DOnt know if it got stuck or what? Then this morning there was another one that didnt look goot. I think it has a pasty but so I cleaned it up and popped it back into the bator to warm up. Checked all the rest and found another that looked like a possible paste-up so I cleaned up that one as well. I have never had this before--wonder what's different? These were three of the tiniest chicks so ? Who knows...as soon as I am done with this hatch I am done for the season...I will just let the broodies do their thing!

BL4--looks like you guessed the right number of eggs to leave...7 is where my little duck started sitting too! It was the first time she had gone into the stall by herself for the night...I was so afraid something got her! We didnt get back until after 8:30 and it was already pretty dark.

Off to do some work and then go to work...sure miss my Mondays off! Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Hello, fellow Wisconsinites! Beautiful day in the ol' cheesehead state, right?

Finally...sunshine...warm (uh...sort of?)...bluebirds...spring...

Hope everyone had a great Easter!

Morning all. Nice sunny day fiigures it is a monday. The chicks had a good night. Bianca greeted me this morning so i had to pick her up. The comets made a huge mess in their brooder. Looks like they had
A food fight, the little pains threw most of the food from their feeder on the ground. The slw are much neater, i changed their food and water, hope they will be ok until i get home

Happy Easter

anyone else have a weird weekend, had a 100% hatch on Easter sun (should have joined the Easter hatch thread), my youngest broke her arm on sat (the left of course,

so it was touchy, but no permanent damage to the arm) just a lot of crazyness

good morning, it's a beautiful day in wisconsin..!!!

I have a few things to do with the eggs and hatching today..
I have a dozen guinea eggs , 10 turkey eggs and over a dozen barred rock eggs to get into the bator.. Oh yeah, and 3 dozen americauna eggs.. and this doesn't include what we will collect today.. I have about 60 barred rock eggs set already.. I think I am about done saving them..

we butchered one of the barred rock roosters yesterday..I really like how easy they pluck compared to some other types of chickens.. Yes, different types of chickens do pluck differently..

then I wanted to eliminate one tray in the hatcher so that I could spread the other two apart so we can keep an eye on what is going on in there. BUT , the chicks are starting to hatch and there are so many pips, I don't want to open the hatcher.. Yeah, the Javas started yesterday (a day early) and the Delawares started today , right on time.. There are four of each jumping around in there already..

I just now got a phone call.. the people are actually coming for the 5 roosters.. You never know if people are going to follow through with what they say they are going to do..

This will free up another breeding pen.. yaaa !! Annie already filled the other pen last night with the trio of jungle fowl.. One hen was broody, but Annie jerked her out of the nest anyhow.. Maybe the change of scenery will jolt her out of her broody ways,..

I had another call earlier from a woman who saw my name in a book.. yes, I am published.. Her husband is stopping by tomorrow morning to check out my chicken plucker.. He and the guy I bought my barred rocks from are going to build a plucker together..

I didn't mean to write a novel,.. I just let my fingers do the talking.. LOL

otonoh isn't that just the coolest when they do that! BCC owie! On the DD. Zsa Glad to hear from you! Sounds like your enjoying the day. TO it always seems to be the wee ones that have the pasty butt thing. But your on top of it.

Was just going to have some eggs and a truck pulled in spent more than an hour assessing the ditch situation. They want to be good neighbors and are bringing an excavator in to run the dead end ditch out to the highway as soon as diggers hotline clears the way. Next will be back to my assembly person to get the hwy ditches cleaned out so the water will flow where it's supposed to.

But I'm not contacting them until this ditch is done.

good afternoon.. I am waiting for the big rush.. I had to open the hatcher so I removed all the chicks that were out. 4 Javas and 3 Delawares.. I moved the trays and took out a couple of turkey eggs that are clears.. all the dinking around did not seem to hurt the eggs, as there are 3 of each hatched since then. no stickys..
Those Javas sure are not shy..

The people came and picked up the 5 roosters.. 1 Rhode Island Red, 2 Leghorns and 2 Barred Rocks..

I was watering the month old chicks outside when I noticed a yellow one that had the stand-up look of my black jungle fowl..
He is a cross breed, but there is no question who the father is..

I spent the last hour designing a 4 section layer nest that I can make out of just one sheet of plywood.. You could make it easily 5 section and maybe even 6.. but I only need 4 .. It will be the nests for the project .. I am going to build them here and haul them down.. I have all the tools and machinery to build them here.. they will have hinged backs on them for collecting the eggs and cleaning out the nests..

Annie saw me drawing the plans and of course suggested two more sets for us; one in each of the two lean to coops..
she also suggested that I clean out the garage.. she never runs out of projects.. LOL
