Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hey Jim, wouldya mind posting that nifty nestbox plan of yours when you get it done? I, for one, would like to see what you came up with.

DrH, good neighbors are worth their weight in gold. Yours sound pretty good.

BCC, hope DD gets healed up fast, at least before summer

I have a silkie that just went broody for the FIRST TIME (my kiddos are so excited). She is now sitting on 3 eggs (not fertile...i dont have a rooster) but she has been sitting on them for about 5 days. Is it too late to get her fertile eggs? - I dont want her to quit and not finish the "job" or do it half way (that would be terrible). So my question is: Should I give her fertile eggs or should I wait a couple of weeks and buy some chicks to give her?

Thank you------------loving all of your posts, especially those with pics

No, its not to late to put fertile eggs under her. Broody hens have no idea how long they've been sitting on eggs. I had one sitting on an empty nest for 3 months once. I finally felt bad and got her fertile eggs from a friend. My Cochin hen kicked her off the nest once she saw eggs in there. That hen that was broody all summer never did get a to hatch an egg!

afternoon all, check on the feather kids and all are fine, the comets have really grown. Bianca came right up to me, she is so cute, checked her vent and no more poo. She is a bit more active too. Hopefully she isn't a roo. We gotta feed the boys, The youngest has a 3 hour concert tonight, Ick. I don't mind his but it is a 6-12 orchestra concert and I really don't feel like getting home at 10:00pm and having to leave at 6:00am the next morning eEspecially on a Monday night.

Amy that's what amazes me it's owned by a large corp that has hundreds of fields. Thought there was no way they'd listen to me but I was wrong. There is an underlying agenda, they want their field dry enough to plant too. They were going to plant in there today but it's too wet. The main field manager brought back an "ol timer" to see what he thought about it. He raised several options but no matter what that ditch will drain!

Tell me it's so. Tell me it's so! Glad you checked in king and glad you keep an eye on us wayward souls. I'm suckin a beer and letting this all sink in. I know that once they let that ditch go [slowly] that my yard will be submerged [more] but then I can call the state and get on their butts. That's what I meant about waiting to call them till after. Again underlying agenda. I'm getting this done even if I have to play games. They won't play nice so I won't either. MWAHAHA HAHA!!!!!! What a great day!

On the contrary ontonoh if the hwy ditches get cleaned out they won't have water problems either. Their already up in arms about the situation and want the same thing thing I do except they don't do anyything but B about it. They'll join with me and get something done. Don't worry I have a plan! So glad to hear all the babies are doing good!

Good evening--just had some yummy LO lentil soup. Made some grilled cheese for DH too. Gave another riding lessen to the 4H kids tonight. Before that I actually got another wall up on that coop I started last fall! I might have a coop done soon...just in time to get all the babies out of the basement and get the living room chicks downstairs. Man, I cleaned out the incubator tonight cause it was smelling like dead stuff. No wonder, one of the chicks had sipped but was inside an eggshell so it died! oor thing...I feel bad. None of my quail hatched again...I dont get what I am doing wrong with them...so now there are a dozen eggs in the bator from a broken broody. Maybe they will hatch maybe not....but look what I found today!

She was sitting in the barn and I pushed her with my foot and there were 10 babies under her! Then I walked around and OMG--look!

This one has 6! So now I have 4 broodies that have chicks...OMG--do I ever have a lot of chickens! THis chicken math is working too well this year! Just wait until the ducks and geese start up!

Terri O very cool on the chicks, sorry about the quail. My math is bad too, I wanted 6 I have 10. I think that really is the max I can have. I would like ducks, but I can't kill them so I don't know what I would do with them.
The concert was wonderful 10 songs and we got out in record time.
stay dry everyone

David
