Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

My momma hen came out with her chicks today. She's got 2 dorking and 1 Iowa Blue mix.

gud evenink,, I was on the incubation threads until the mllitants and "experts" showed up.. then I unsubscribe and let them go at it.. LOL

my hatch is going steady, but slow.. only about 10 more chicks waiting to go upstairs to the brooder.

Dr H, we have sort of the same scenerio.. the field above us drains right at our house.. Annie talked to one of the boys and he promised to bring his cat over and build a berm for us.. as soon as the ground unfreezes.. well, the ground was unfrozen enough for them to disc the field Saturday.. I do not see a berm yet.. If they do not do it, I just might give it a try with my tractor and back blade..

but they did disc up my garden for me..

I know they are busy,, so they will get around to it..

If they direct the water to the ditch at the road, the next house down the hill will really get dumped on.. when the previous owner built the house, he skipped putting a culvert at his driveway.. now the water dams up there at the edge of our properties, and floods his yard.. this will be the new peoples first spring and summer in that house.. I wonder how they will like it..?

I hope everyone had a fantastic Easter!

Will and I went to 2 Easter suppers - his family's and mine. We did most of our eating at his though, because my mom can't cook!

That "miracle" Call duckling hatched just fine - I helped him out a little. His name isn't Marvel or Lucky though - it's SCREECH! He's too small to go in the brooder with the big duckies and chicks...we tried that, but the bigger duckies weren't very nice...so he's in his own brooder right next to them, and he spends most of his time screeching to be in with them.

Poor thing. He's eating and drinking and growing like a weed though, so it won't be long until he can play with the big kids without being in danger of getting hurt.

He's another Blue Fawn, so right now I'm 50/50 Blue Fawn and Blue Bibbed ducklings.

Stuffed my incubators full tonight - I have TWO pens of Columbian Cochins laying now (I have them separated into 4 breeding pens), and my Mottled Cochins have been giving me an egg a day. Now if only the Whites would start laying.

Went and picked out wedding flowers today. Couldn't get the Ranunculus and Gardenias I wanted because it's a September wedding, and it was tough to find flowers we liked in our color scheme (White & Violet-Purple - there aren't a whole lot of naturally purple flowers in nature!). But we ended up choosing an arrangement of Daisies (White, and White with Purple centers), Purple Lisianthus, and Stephanotis. I would have gone with all White Daisies, pure and simple - but Will is insisting on the purple, and one of his buddies owns the flower shop, and he wants to do something more elaborate for us.

good morning all,, it is raining out and not too inviting looking to go out.. but that does not mean that you can stay in bed all day !!!! come on ,, daylight in the swamp !!!

the hatcher is lively with all the chicks that hatched overnight.. I cannot get a good count.. I don't think I am at 50% yet, though.. lotsa Javas..

We quit collecting the Barred Rock eggs as of yesterday.. I have about 60 eggs set..maybe more..

I have a couple of guys stopping in this morning to check out my chicken plucker..

BTW If any of you ever decide to build a chicken plucker, contact me first.. I have tons of photos and notes I can email to you. might even save some $$$$ for you.. the WhizBang kit costs between $500 to $700.. I built both of mine for about $250/each..

I forgot who asked about the nest plans.. I am just about finished drawing them.. I had to back up on the clean-out door design, I thought of a better way to do it.. the sections will be 13 inches wide and 14 inches deep and 13 inches high. all the pieces can be cut out of just one 4ftx8ft sheet of plywood or OSB.. the most expensive parts are the 16 hinges (for the 4 section design).. 7/16 x 4ftx8ft OSB is $7.oo at Menards as of this week..

Good morning all...hope you take your umbrellas if you go out! Figures, I didnt have to walk the dog yesterday (but I do today) I did get work done on that coop though as I said...too bad I wont be continuing that work today! It is hard to hold an umbrella and use a circular saw at the same time.

Not to mention DUMB! Ya know, DH bought a table saw at an auction...it is still in pieces in the garage...man I sure could use that thing!
Jim I am betting that the newish neighbors down the hill will be adding that missing culvert! Hey, maybe they can contact DrH and they could go in on a package deal for a price drop! When they widened our road a few years back I insisted on a berm in front of our house. They made one for me but didnt make it long enough so the water can still get around it and go into the basement.

It is pretty useless.
Yes I see what you mean Amyable about that 7th chick! HMMM--I could have sworn she only had 6! Proof in the picture, when it comes to chickens I guess I cant count! Last night when I went out to lock up I heard frantic peeping! I went up in the top barn and there were 3 chicks stuck in a little well in this plastic pallet thing that DH has in there. I couldnt believe that they couldnt jump out; so I grabbed them up, the one that was alone was nearly dead with cold. He perked up though as I was searching for the mamas. They must be hidden really well--couldnt find either one! I took the babies into the coop and snuggled them under the mama that has 10 in there...wonder if she will be surprised to wake up to 13? Chicken math again!!! Hopefully they will be OK in there (I havent been out yet) they are about a week younger than her other ones. I considered popping them under the broody whose eggs just wont seem to hatch...she is on her second clutch; but I didnt want them to surprise her...and maybe she wouldnt be a good Mom. I might move them back to the original mom, depends how they are doing.
I have absolutely no energy this morning! I went back to bed after I got the parrots back in their cage at 6. (their nest box came off) I should have stayed up...I was pretty awake especially after the female clamped onto my index finger! I think I know why I like chickens so much....I sure wish you could teach them to talk!

I suppose I'd better get some stuff fed so I can go to work...sigh...Have a fantastic day! Terri O

(PS) Congrats on your broody BBC. What kind is she?

Somebody keeps squirting eggs under that duck.... she had 9 under her yesterday. I marked all of the eggs she is sitting on with a big X so now all the new ones will be removed. I hope she manages to hatch out a few, it sure would be cute to see more babie calls!

Everyone have their flippers on???? Will the rain ever end????? I hope everyone is staying dry! (Basement-wise that is...)

Nothing else going on here; Easter was great and all the food is gone! That means I have to figure out what I am making for dinner.....
