Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello everyone! Hope all you sexy mama's had a great Mama's day!!! DH made me breakfast and coffee, picked me up lunch and took me out to dinner!! We went to Bucas, and I had a peach bellini (peach schnapps, peach puree, peaches and topped with champange) and I was drunk after that! Then we ordered tiramisu and I gave a chunk to Damien before trying it, and BOYYY was it rummy! DH ended up snatching a lot of it back, but Damien didn't seem to mind the rum. Didn't knock him out either, what? I thought rum made you sleep better!! I hear all the time from my elderly that a thimble of rum in the bottle...nevermind

I don't need another "Bad mom of the year award!" haha.

DrH I am surprised you are starting so late on the garden!! TO, what about you? I got my radishes, arugula, spinach and pok choy started in the garden. Not to mention seeds started inside for my summer stuff. Although I worry they may be kinda small come my plant out date, June 1st.

Dkvart) I do heirlooms. I have German giants this year for toms...I will need to look through my collection, what are you looking for? I will be saving a lot of seed this year (as I won't be pregnant...WE HOPE), as last year when I got pregnant I couldn't even go outside and smell the garden without my stomach churning. So all my seed saving ideas went out the window!! I will probably have a TON of volunteer toms this year...a lot fell off the plants and rotted in the soil. Shoot me a PM!

I found a lady on craigslist that is selling 50 strawberry plants for $10!!

DH is getting those also as a Mother's Day gift for me after work tonight. I have a feeling they will be small, but i'll throw some good ol' poopy straw around them and I'm sure they will get rather large! I am excitied to knock out those weeds and plant them with something useful! Like strawberries!! My original plant that I got 2 years? ago has now about 12 baby plants from it.

I can't wait for those seedlings to pop up and start being more reconizable! Then I am going to weed heavily and throw down some heavy mulch! I am so sick of this weed garden!!

In other news, DH and I are going to see a house in Farmington (ha, how convient) hopefully this weekend or next. It's a nice big house, which is updated, on 6 acres! I am not sure the land, and quality of it...DH says it looks like swamp land, but we could always fill it? I dunno, sounds like a lot of additional work...but I guess it depends how "swampy" it is! It's a little on the high end of our budget, but I can seriously move in, put the kids in their rooms and put my feet up. No work needs to be done to the home unless cosmetic. Which is a big plus for us with two little ones. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be!

This post is getting long, but I just wanted to put in there HURLEY I am sooo sorry about your chicks!

Things will turn better for you, DH probably feels terrible!

Raiquee you better check with the idiots at the DNR before you even think about filling in wetlands......

Cast iron is the way to go! Once you get them seasoned they are awesome! A good workout for your arms too!

I finally got the incubator going on its 'trial' run before putting eggs into it. I have about a doz call eggs and I am hoping I can get a doz or so of those blue chicken eggs to hatch out for my mom's friends (the ones who have Amy the rooster.).

Rain rain go away!

Hi all! Rai if you DDO move to Farmington you will be literally just down the road! Yes and do be careful about wetlands...although it sure seems that the farmers with the $$$ have no problems when they want to drain it and plant....double standards to be sure!
Here is my coop in it's location:

And here are the inhabitants thinking about coming out to the big new world:

I took a pic of the sitting Call duck too and scared her with the flash:

All 7 seem good so I am hoping I will have some babies soon! (I threw away a slosher a week ago)
THe run for my little ones is only cheap plastic net fencing. I just wanted to keep the older ones away from them and their food. THey didnt get too much time to be out today with the rain and thunder! Well, I was a t work...I hope they had the sense to go in anyway! I have to build something for their food to sit underneath so it doesnt get soaked every time it rains.
Oh yeah, Here is another pic I took this morning:

Yup, that's my little Bantam...what is he again Connie? crowing his little heart out! It is such a cute crow! He is only the size of the smallest of the Blue Ameracaunas that I got from Jim at the swap. I have a little hen too. I plan on showing them this year at the fair...but I guess I first have to find out what they are...again!
roll.png
I left them in with the little ones for now but they will probably be going in with the others in the new coop at least for a while. Can they be bantam blue Ameracaunas? (is there such a thing?) THey sre are the same color as my blues...but little!

Funny you guys were talking about cast iron pans...I just told my client that I wanted to get some. I made his grilled sandwich and some fried potatoes in a couple at lunch and I loved how they worked! I think I have some rusty ones in the basement that I got at a yard sale a while ago...maybe time to dig them out.

Off to make some shells for our tacos tonight...then I have to work. Blah! I am telling her that this is my LAST night for sure! I have too much to do to be working at night too!
Have a great night! TErri O

Dumb question #2: one of my three chickens was missing feathers on her back, by her tail feathers. About the size of a fifty cent piece. Just bare skin it looks like with a couple of black dots. I see her preening that area, if that is the right term. I noticed other chickens inthe farmer coop had that as well but bigger. Is this a concern, like could that be mites or lice or something? Sould I expect that they will grow back?

Another "not a dumb question"...LOL--it probably is just from overzealous roos. When there are too many roos (or they have a favorite hen) sometimes they wear the feathers off the hen's back. IT is only really serious if they break the skin (which does happen unfortunately) then the hen could get an infection. There are "aprons" or "saddles" that you can have the hen wear to help her heal or to prevent feather breakage. I call them dresses! I think it sounds better.
THe little dots are probably the feather follicle trying to grow a new feather. HTH--Terri O

Since the bash is in the spring and all of us will have at least one broody...maybe the bubble should say, "Keep your hands away; these are MINE!"

I think it's "Trick me once, shame on you; trick me twice shame on me!" or something like that!

Hi to all, and A belated Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms.

Dooner I have Question #3- My Jungle hen (Jane) Started laying 2 weeks ago and in the nest boxes. Then I found two on a shelf. I cleaned the coop last week and since then she has been laying them right in front of the big door. I open it and the egg is there. What's with this ????? Poor dear must be mixed up.
Question #4- My chicks 14 of them 4 weeks old, are always tipping over there feeders. I hung the water to keep that cleaner do I need to hang the food feeders too?

Hurley I'm so sorry for your loss. I guess we all should think twice before using our Teflon pans that we all thought were so great when they first came out. Guess I will have to learn how to season cast iron pans and get with a better way.

Sure wish we were planting, still waiting for ground conditions and the area we are having prepared by a friend with a tractor. (new larger area) We agree with the more you grow of your own the better.

Great job with the new coops, thanks for the pics.

Have a good night and hopefully we don't get a week of rain like they are saying. Susie
