Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Happy Mommy Day everyone!!

Then to feeds chickens and unpack some more.
Have a great and wonderufl time folks!

Hi all you fowl people,

I moved the guineas a duckling and the gosling out with the chicks in the pen.. there was a bit of bullying , but nothing serious.. All the geese had to come and check out the cry-baby gosling.. I almost turned him loose, but I didn't want anybody to quit a nest to babysit just this one gosling..

I worked on the nests a bit.. but Annie wanted to go to town so I am back in the house with Mom.. However I did find out that the ah-ha moment I had Thursday morning is going to work..
I have one nest done and two to go..

BBL4,,, I usually get $3/ea for my guinea keets.. the ones that make no noise, I get $400.oo/ea.. guineas are tolerant uf us fowl people., but do not like being held.. You should make very effort to get them into a coop each night or they become quite independent and wilder.. guineas who sleep in the tree soon become owl breakfast..

I have 6 new chicks and 1 new turkey today.

I looked at the 6 week old chicks closely today.. I am pretty sure I can already tell the pullets from the roosters.. it is about 2 P to 1 R ratio.. There are quite a few white chicks.. don't know how that happened.. there was neither a white hen nor a white rooster in that breeder pen.. All I can think it might be was something in the genes of the red stars..???

Hi all!

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!!!

otonoh-the coop looks beautiful!! You chicks are gonna love it!!! As far as them fighting-they are playing and starting to establish who will be the dominant chicken. They start young!! of cource it's more play then anything at the moment and the whose going to be the dominant one can flop and change around until they get older. Right now in my Chick Tank, the Barnyard Bunch roos are having fights and spats and I swear they must have some Gamebird in them because they fight dirty! However I have one bantam RIR roo that jumps the ones three times his size. The bigger ones back off but then get even by stepping on him! LOL!! Then they all settle down like the best of buds and take a nap...I could watch them all day!

Jim-yep, you probably have all the white babies from the Red Stars having a white rock mom. Red Stars (aka Red Sex Links) are a sex linked hybrid breed but are not "auto-sexing" like a Gold Legbar or Cream Legbar which are actually a purebred breed- not a hybrid. There are not a lot of auto sexing breeds. Your sex links are the first generation since they were 'sexed' as babies. But now that your girls have chicks of their own, their chicks revert back to what their grandparents were (as far as no longer being sex linked). Sex linking is only a first generation trait.
Auto sexing breeds are sex linked too however that trait is bred to be true. So every generation the chicks are able to be sex linked.

So, dh and I got more then have of the chicken yard done to today so tomorrow we will be able to finish it!! The chicks are going to be so happy! They kept staring at us with little pleading eyes "Faaaaster!! Work faster!!!" Dh at one point said "So how many mothers do you think are spending Mothers Day building a chicken coop?" I replied "More then you know probably, and I bet my Cheesehead Friend Terri is working on hers today!"

Well Im off to paint the last little bit of wood for the coop! Have a great night!

Happpy Mothers Day Evening to all the Mom's. Hope you all had a great rewarding day!

Yep knawing at the bit Doc. Wish we were closer too! Waited quite a while for the snow to disappear so a guy could get going, and then

Glad it's still early enough to hope I'll geter all planted. Suzie will again be doin more than usual. I just gotta love that girl for pickin up my slack. I'll prolly have to call the guy that comes and tills with a 4 foot tiller and compact tractor. I think preping the soil is the biggest job here. Making rows and planting goes pretty good once the garden is ready. I know you know, just sayin.

Yep, the rescue center always puts out a plea during deer season for the hunters to share their deer hearts for raptor feed!

The peeps in the brooder are really growing fast now....gonna be 5 weeks old Tuesday. They look really good I think. The blue ones are looking good Jim. I told Suzie I should of taken em all. She said, and where are you gonna go with the ones you have now. I said

we'll figure it out. Always do.

Not the greatest Mother's day morning today. Woke up at 6am to head out to a dog show, came down the stairs to feed/water chicks as I do every morning, and found 15 dead chicks, the other 20 looking rough. What the? Water, check. Food, check. Heat light was off, but these chicks are weeks old and the room warm, haven't had the light on in a week or so. Come to find out DH's intent to make himself some spaghetti when the boys and I went to bed last night went awry. Boiled off the water and found the pan on the stove dry. Say hello to teflon toxicity, lost half my chicks including all but a 4 of my Iowa blues. 6 months planning and my Iowa Blue flock down the toilet.

Ah well. I've got the most beautiful boy in the world giving me kisses and calling me Ma Ma with the other most beautiful boy in the world blowing me wet raspberries. Happy Mother's Day.

I hear ya on the kiddos cheering you up, though. Sure does it for me.

i finished the 3 hole chicken nests today.. I even took pictures..
I can't post them on byc, but I could send them to anybody who is interested.. Somebody awhile ago mentioned wanting to see pictures.. I forget who..

Some mothers build chicken coops on mothers' day.. and Annie had me butchering a turkey and "as long as the water is still hot" why don't we just do that extra Delaware rooster? I'm yelling,, everybody run for your lives,,,!!!! the water is still hot !!

seeing as how it was mothers' day, I decided to let Annie leave the supper dishes to wash until tomorrow..

another turkey pipped.. the first one #9 is in the chick TV. He is the new #9.. one somehow got stuck in the feeder and died a while later..

I have 6 jungle fowl eggs to set..

Hurley, that is the #1 reason why I do not have Teflon pans.

Well I have had an interesting Mother's Day; I fixed my pond, did some gardening, broke one of my bowls, went to my moms to do some yardwork for her and ended up with 2 baby squirrels. After doing some digging I determined that the babies are about 5 weeks old. The kids have just loved peeking in on them, I have them rigged to hang in an old stocking cap so they feel more like they are in a nest. Tomorrow they will be making their way to the wildlife re-habber ( I don't have enough time to take on baby squirrels!). Good thing I had those syringes left over from Jules! On our way out to my in-laws I picked up some dye-free pedialyte and some puppy formula; pedialyte to re-hydrate and the formula for later (since both of the babies willingly climbed down from the tree to us, I am thinking my mom's dog had dispatched their mom recently......).

Anyway, I am pooped. Off to bed!

Good Morning All! ODrH that's terrible to come all this way then lose so many!

Hope the rest make it OK! Before I forget has anyone seen any humingbirds yet? I need to get an apron for Btwo, Buster has a lot of her back feathers pulled out gonna make some phone calls to see if anyone local has them. Poor Baby! Might have to quarantine her, that'll drive Peatwo crazy. MLH Btwo is a second generation red sexlink and is white with a few black feathers. Raim hows your water levels doing? When I got done planting yesterday I went to come out of the garden and there was Goldie waiting to sneak in. She is the most inquizitive of all of them and is always where she's not supposed to be. ie; in the top of my toolbox, in the back of the Jeep, first one in the back door if not closed, helping herself to my open beer. She's just naughty! Bad naughty! Rechecked the seeds I see I forgot to put in the cilantro will put it in before going out to split wood. Better get movin before the rain comes in! Have a good one!
