Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

@Sweetfolly: Finals, blah, I know how they are! Mine start Monday, with a Soils exam and a Theatre appreciation (cumulative!

), Tues is my Psyc, and Weds is Philosphy. Its seems like Point is behind everyone else for summer vacation, we were for Spring break as well.

@shantibirdy: Out of my chickens & mutts, the only one that had a super bad molt was my Brown leghorn. She didn't really lay during that period. I mainly have dual chickens, and i just havn't knoticed the molts to bad on them.

SF good luck on finals. Hope you get a great offer on the house!

Amyable have a great time at the swap. Can't wait until we're up there and can get to some of them.

Terri O I've noticed chicken math is very similiar to plant math. My DH is always asking... "don't you have enough?" It's really the only shopping I enjoy and I can get in trouble there! He's finally accepted that and told me the other day..."just think honey, you'll never have to give up a plant again." Since I'm now rehoming those to big to move.

MLH the Orloff is very pretty, gonna have to look them up. Hate looking up more breeds, every time I do my list of "wants" gets longer.

Not feeling great today, side effects of the Lyme disease. Odd aches and pains and upset tummy. Another 7 days and these strange symptoms should start clearing up. Thank heaven, it would be nice to have some energy back.

Enjoy your day everyone!

My mom asked me to help her candle the 20 or so eggs under her turken hen about a week ago. Well, I waited too long and one or more had exploded all over the others. It was pretty gross. She was very upset so I brought the eggs in the house, washed them with hot water and popped them ion her incubator. I told her not to expect anything to hatch but we'd give them a chance. The next day one hatched. Then her boyfriend unplugged the incubator because he needed an outlet and forgot to plug it back in. This went unnoticed for 6 hours! The eggs were cold so I thought they were for sure dead. Somehow, every single egg managed to hatch. The last one (a turken x blue Cochin) hatched yesterday.

Good Morning Good People! Hope you do well on your finals Ms.F and Sf! TO you ARE a class act!

Bigz I put one of the smaller aprons on Btwo late yesterday. She adjusted pretty quickly but the rest of the flock did not. Of course the boys got upset with her squawkin. Buster mounted her right away but the hens chased her and pecked at her something terrible. She ran nonstop from them for half an hour until she found a hiding spot and stayed hidden for another half an hour. I finally took it off, didn't want her in the coop getting picked on till dark. Will give it another try today. Let the kids out this morning and took a stroll past the garden and found that lettuces and spinach is up.

Can't wait for some fresh salad!

Should be out in the woods today but already made plans to make my spanish rice for the freezer and supper. Should be making Buster noodle soup too. As soon as I opened the coop he was ready for a fight.

Now Peatwo is showing some aggresiveness. Reached down to give him a pet and he whacked me a good one. Looks like next week is supposed to be dry and cool good wood makin weather. Yesterday I got the longest outside wall in the wood shed filled now onto the second one. The third wall is for kindling. Then onto filling in the center, that goes pretty quickly. Gotta go make some eggs.

Morning all!

@ Shaniti-It has been my experience that when chickens molt they do not lay. I would imagine some might lay during molt, but generally speaking they don't. The harder the molt the more time they take to get back to laying. Stress also plays a factor is laying so if chickens are not in molt they maybe stressed and they can loose loads of feathers as a sign on stress.

@dk1-I know right! I see a new variety and think! "Cool I want one!" It is so hard to stick to just one breed. For some reason I'm going through "I want an Ameraucana and maybe a Welsummer or Maran." I have no clue what is up with that. If you want Orloffs when the time goes look me up! I always want more! I also hope you feel better soon!

@ SF and M Frizzle-good luck with finals! Hope you get all A's. And good luck with the house SF!!! I'll be rooting for you!

Ok off I go! I've got to load the truck to go to the dump. Have a terrific day!!!

Oh wait! Hubby is looking at the Ventura Country Star, our newspaper from where we lived in Cali. He likes to keep up with his roots! Anyway he just told me that according to a new federal law Mini horses are now recognized as a service animals. It is left up to the state and muncipality to accept them or not. They are also trying to get rats passed as service animals. Apparently, rats are very easy to train as seizure alert animals. And since they are cheap to buy, those who cant afford dogs, can get rats.

Ok off I go......

Morning!

Hopefully it will be some what nice today- our 4-H kids are helping out with a 5K/10K run to benfit the community center where we hold meetings. So we will be heading out for that in just a bit.

Sorry to hear about the losses- it's always hard

dk1- hoping that the meds will get you feeling better fast

I know someone who is dealing with the same thing and has good days and bad.

MLH- I do have an extra pair of Wheaten Ameraucana chicks that we hatched out in Feb 2011 just in case you decicde;)

Have a good day!

Morning All... Wow that's a real suprise that the poult and the flock freaked like that. Mine acted like nothing happened. Maybe you can try a couple birds with aprons and see if they settle down before returning them to the flock. Silly chickens, mine never squawked even once....I really hope it goes well for you.

Nice pics MLH thanks for sharing.

Yep during the molt the hens energy goes into making new feathers and not eggs. During fall if you don't have some new poults beginning to lay the egg basket can get pretty light when the hens are molting.

Off to town to visit my son and daughter in law. It's their anniversary today. Were gonna stop and drop off a present and wish them luck for many more.

High around 50 here today. I remember when the apple trees were in full bloom on this date. Mine look almost dormant yet with just the leaves starting to open.

I'm just freakin that the aprons aren't going smooth for ya Doc...what the heck...

A couple pics of my progress. Muddling through it, a few mistakes. The side with the windows is the front. The side with the 48" box at the top is the back. The framed out area will be screened and permanently open except in winter, i will make a panel to cover it. There is a six inch difference between front and back. Putting laminate on floor tonight and then insulating underside of floor tomorrow and drilling the posts.

I want. To add one new starter pullet that is around five pounds. I live north of Milwaukee. Kind of interested in a buff orphington or austrlof...basically a good layer that is gentle and very importantly, quiet.

Good morning everyone! Man am I thirsty! Just before going to bed I heard water running and our shower was leaking at the place where the supply tubes come out of the floor. (clawfoot tub) I turned the water off downstairs and went to bed. So this morning he is off to the HW store fore fixin' parts. Just left for the second trip...he cant find the red pipe stuff he bought last time...silly man oughta learn to put his stuff away!

BigZ--ya know if you wouldnt make the aprons with that cute bug print on them the hens wouldnt be chasing DrH's one around! It is weird that his birds are reacting like that cause mine were like show-offs when I put them on them, "Look at me!!! I've got a dress!" I agree DrH--put them on a few birds the they wont know who to chase.

Good luck on the finals you students! My dd19 just got done and we move her out of Madison today. Congrats on the graduation Shanti--what field did your son choose? Mine SHOULD be graduating this year...he took a few semesters off though. Maybe next spring...

BBP---chicks always amaze me what they can go through and still hatch! I am glad that they did for your Mom. WHy did you take them away from the hen though? Wasnt she awfully upset when they were that close? It always makes me sad when the moms sit so long and then hatch NOTHING! I usually give them another clutch right away and hope that one works. I have a broody right now that all her eggs were rotten--I gave her guinea eggs this time. The geese seem to have that problem this year too...the first eggs have been no good...I think I should have some hatched by now...probably something to do with the weather!
The inside birds have had no problem though...my English Zebras brought out 4 adorable babies this week and the other zebras have a nest full too! Also the parrots seem to be thinking about nesting too! I am pretty excited about that--I soooo want a tame parrot to play with!

DD25 just came down and I sent her out to the well pump to get some water for coffee...yup DrH--I AM a class act!
cool.png
Fresh coffee will be nice...this stuff from yesterday is kinda yucky!

Well I suppose I better get something done...making some pork chops for supper with baked potatoes and asparagus from the garden! I think I will pull some of last year's onions too and stir them into sour cream...mmmm! Oh fine--now dd25 told me that dd19 AND her BF are coming back from college and that they are going to the Dells for the weekend! I can never keep up with their plans! She wants ME to come and help her move out...cause she says DH is cranky because of the plumbing--he HATES fixing plumbing!
Calgon take me away!!!!!
Have a fantastic (and peaceful) day! Terri O

We didn't take all of the eggs away from the Turken. She doesn't get to keep any that hatch anyway. One of the cats around there loves to kill chicks. She finally abandoned that nest and is now on a huge pile of duck eggs! Broodys are so funny.
