Well, as long a I'm exposing all of my stuff on here I may as well show you all the Greenhouse DH C built last year. It too needs staining. We bought the stain for it this year.....Does that count?? Don't look at the weeds !!! That is on my TO DO one of these days list. Thought it would make a nice brooder room but it gets way to hot !!!

FT-cool pics love the chicken campers! What a great idea! Your new additions are fabulous! The one with the nasal/basal knob looks like a Chinese.....possibly an African but African's have a dewlap under their chin. The knob is bigger in the males then the females. The other gooses looks like a Pilgrim.
That cart sure is nice! Hope you get the one you want!

DrH-hens can have spurs while not common, it is not uncommon. I've had some hens with them and think that it is more genetic then anything.

Carol-I meant to reply earlier about your foster dog that is eye and ear washing the other dogs. I have two little ones that do that to my other dogs. I find that the dogs getting the "brain massage" as my dh calls it, don't really mind. If the dogs don't want to be washed/licked then a growl usually takes care of it and the washer leaves the washee alone. I wish I was more help as to how to correct the behavior, but I find that the dogs usually sort it all out.

Ok, on a completely different note, I mentioned the possible feather issue with your roos and the hen with the wry neck. He seemed to think that the birds might be having an inner ear issue as well. That could be why they are shaking their heads. He said to get some VetRx. It's a very old school herbal remedy. You might have to order it off the internet. You can drop a few drops in their nostrils, around their beak, on the waddles, and in their ears. If they do have a mite then that should take care of it.


Well today I spent a nice part of the day with Hens & Roos. She was so kind to let me jaunt on over to her place and give me a refresher/learning course in making jam and jelly. Her kids were great and so were the dogs! It was fun and she is a great teacher! Her family even shared a slice a pizza with me and let me take home some "souveniers" of what we made!
Other then that, the chickens are doing well and the little Bardie is still with us but I think that she will not make it through tomorrow. Poor thing.
Emma kicked another egg out and she is down to two. The snot.

FT, sweet geese and runners! And you have an awful lot of nice buildings on your property. Looks like a lot of us could move in wid ya!

Bigz, hope your roo's eye injury starts to heal up quick. Do you have antibiotics you can get into him? And I play euchre, does that count? I haven't played in so long because it's tough getting a foursome together.

A little tired after baling hay today, but am rounding off the evening with a nip with the ducks. Can't drink by myself, can I?

Thought you might enjoy this picture. My new little call gets the pool all to herself, with 21 mamas watching to make sure she's okay. Well, 22 if you count me. They won't go in if she's in.

 

[Hens and Roos]

Evening everyone! Was a productive day for getting the kids to work on 4-H projects! MLH came over this am and we worked on making Strawberry jam and apple jelly, we were just finishing up a batch of salsa when she arrived. It's always nice to have an extra pair of hands to jump in and help as the kids are only able to do so much(of course they were trying to watch a movie too!) Have to do a batch of cherry jam as that is DH's favorite kind and we are currently all out

Cool pictures that everyone has been sharing today and the sparegrass looks yummy! That is one item I would like to get a patch of planted- maybe this fall if I get some spare time

We gave our chickens that are in our one pen, that MLH looked at before leaving, baths this afternoon and cleaned out the bedding and cleaned everything down and hopefully got anything on them off

The one bird(DD'S Andalusian rooster looks like the coloring around his eyes is washed out-it's suppose to be red(not white) so we dewormed him plus all the other boys in that pen. The older ones seem to be molting as well so hopfully the ones picked to go to fair won't be to bad! I will look up the VetRx and see what we can do with that-thanks for the suggestion.

Jim-hope you figure out when all those eggs will hatch! and hope your peachick hatches as well!

Suppose it's time to get the kids rounded up and have them get ready for bed!

MLH I was thinking the same thing but Pilgrim is supposed to have a predominating white area on the head which she doesn't. And chinese is suppose to have a long slender neck. His doen't appear to be any longer then her. Plus his eyes aren't slanty either

Your ducks are adorable. I'll tell ya what, ducks are great but when we had the runners in the brooder in the house...... Man they were cut but they STUCK !!! And I have a high tolerance !!!!

Hey Gigz,(Edited to ad I meag Bigz) let me know if you want some Runners or Rouens. I can seperate them and hatch some out for ya............ as long as you don't eat them !!! So between all the rest of us on here you can have every kind of duck duck or goose you want

I vote that we all bring Bigz a baby duck, duck or goose to the bash next year !!! How bout it?

Oh, as far as the eye ointment. I haven't seen it at the Fleet Farm in Antigo but I think the Wausau one has is, not for sure though. Foster and Smith carries it as does other mail order. It is between $10-$12, ripoff for a tiny small tube.

That's everything I can remember.

Wish I could figure out how on this tiny piece of land I can do everything I want to do (which would include two mini goats, which would be helpful along the tree line, since posion ivy is runny rampant there, among other things! and I detest using posions)... The way I figure it... I have 1/2 an acre... house, garage, shed, driveway and doggie yard take up a little over a 1/3... back yard beyond doggie yard is mostly shade... leaves me less than... what's 1/3 of 1/2... NOT MUCH - THAT'S WHAT!!!! For chickens, orchard, garden... the goats would have to the size of my min schnauzer or smaller for me to squeeze them in!!!

I spent part of Thursday and most of Friday tearing out the weed patch/hosta bed around the tree stump added composted manure and finally at 7:00 last night threw the flowers in! The droopy ones are some cone flowers from the neighbors garden/park, they are still wilted, but I have faith the roots will take off and while I may loose what's there, I'm sure more will sprout up

I put in bee balm, blanket flowers, pincusions flowers, mullelien, bugle weed or something, daisies, black eyed susan, threadleaf coreopsis, russian sage and perrennial salvia and something else I forget the name of... basically all the good plants I could find at F&F at 50% off!!!

In addition I put in this little flower bed by the patio, still have to secure the bricks the neighbor was kind enough to give me to keep the dirt from washing onto the patio and added some begonias in front of the hostas along the garage and some other stuff w/the hostas under the bedroom windows and planted three little starts off my neighbors giant hostas around the big tree beyond the fence. Plan on adding 2 or three more around the rest of the tree next week.

Today I cut up some downed branches (hand saws are a wonderful workout, which I surely needed after 2 days of digging, ripping up landscape fabric, chopping tree roots, etc!!), started a compost pile, did some laundry, scrubbed the floors, baked a cake, moved the misc unpacked totes from the move to the back of the garage, all nicely stacked and swept the garage out, packed up the van for trip to daughters tomorrow and then finally sat down and tried to relax. After two hours I was itching for something to do! LOL.

Well, off to try to get some sleep, promised daughter I would be on the road by 6 a.m. so I could be there by 8:00... the things we do for our kids!!

Oh joy....the kids in the neighborhood are setting off fire works....Buddy is barking like mad and Sax is cowering on my bed.....As much as I love the 4th, I'll be glad when the kids stop the fire works....

FT- Your geese are most likely crosses. It is common for the African to be crossed with the Toulouse to produce a meat goose. So that could explain the one with the knob. The other goose still looks Pilgrim like to me that beak is the right color and the "slope" of it looks correct for a Pilgrim. But she? he? is most likely a cross too. Another though is an American Buff or American Buff cross?

Bigz-I hope your rooster's eye is ok. If he were mine, I'd give him a shot of penicillin. We give 1cc if he is a full sized roo and 1/2 cc if he is a bantam or young guy. The best place is right in his breast muscle. That will help will help a lot. I have to make a note though that very rarely a bird is allergic to Penicillin and if they are they will just drop dead right then and there.

dk-great job on the yard! It sure looks spiffy!! Have a safe visit with your daughter tomorrow!

Hi everyone,

Sorry it's been so long. My life is crazy busy lately but to fill everyone in:


- The baby is doing great and I'm officially due October 21st with a little boy! We got his room all ready with new blue carpet and all and DD got new pink carpet in her room.

- We have 6 chickens left that are permanent residents and it crazy to think they are almost a year old already! This year has flown by.

- DD got 4 Muscovy ducklings a few weeks ago and we LOVE them and so do our neighbors. We are keeping them outside and just clipping their wings so they cant fly over our fence when they are out free ranging. We asked all of our surronding neighbors and none of them have a problem with us keeping them so we are going to take our chances with the city. I talked to a few police officers and they said the ordinance here is so crazy they don't follow it completely. It's basically a "if no one complains they don't care" kind of thing.

- My mini orchard and garden has grown a ton this year. We now have: 1 Honeycrisp Apple Tree, 1 5-1 Apple tree, a Fruit Cocktail tree, 1 Sour Cherry tree, 1 Sweet Cherry tree, Yellow Raspberries, Blueberries, Strawberries, Grapes, Broccoli, Tomatoes, Peppers, Brussel Sprouts, Cantaloupe, and the wish list is still growing.

- Lastly if anyone near Manitowoc has Easter Egger pullet chicks, or would be willing to split and order with me PLEASE let me know. I am down to 6 girls and would really like to stay at 10-15 chickens total but 5 of my Easter Egger "pullets" turned out to be roos and had to go and then out of my 3 EE girls one lays brown eggs so I got rid of my 3 Buff Orpington girls because I want more blue/green egg layer and less brown. I sold my incubator though so I can't buy hatching eggs. I was just spending way too much on eggs and having bad hatch rates or the ones that did hatch ended up being males. For obvious city reasons I can't have a rooster crowing.

Did some weeding in the gardens and splashed in the pool. Made brownies for tomorrow, sister and her two sons will be out for cookout and a swim. Fireworks tomorrow night, not sure where ???
