2 days ago we had an Old English Bantam Hen hatch out 4-5 chicks and she is very protective of them. This is the first chicks born on our farm. We have had ducks and geese for a decades.

I scooped her and her chicks and put them in a rabbit hutch thinking it would be more protection and easy food for them since our chickens do have a barn they can go to if they want at night, but they all free range as they like because we have some excellent Turkish Kangals that don't play around with any predators. My plan is to introduce feed store chicks under hen tonight and hope she adopts them as her own. Then them all bond for a week and turn them back out to free range.

So this morning we went to TS & Atwoods and pickup up a few more bantam chicks, same age, and are curious to know what breeds they might be. The chicks are around 3-4 days old and I realize they are way too young to ID positively, but looking for guesses. I'll post pics of them as the grow out.

We have chickens but this is our first time buying chicks from feed store and they didn't have a clue as to breed.
Any help would be appreciated! Any thing I have written in this post about our plan that needs revised, let me know. I'm a newbie!!

Feather legged chick one, is a buff Cochin bantam/Pekin.
Feather legged chick three, is a Partridge Cochin Bantam/Pekin.
Feather legged chick four is a Mille Fleur D’Uccles.
Feather legged chick five looks like a frizzled black Cochin Bantam to me. That curl in its feathers is the frizzle gene.
Feather legged chicks seven and eight are buff silkies. They look bearded to me.
Feather legged chicks nine and ten are also bearded silkies. Not so good with the silkie colours in general. Blue sounds about right, but I’ll tag @Debbie292d for more help.
I can’t figure out what chick one could be :idunno . @JedJackson , any ideas?

Congratulations on your broody. Gorgeous hen! Be aware that she might not accept them. I’m sure you have a backup plan just in case.

Agree 5 is a frizzle.

The white/yellow ones are hard to know because that one on the left could go blue/gray/silver, but most likely white and something. When they are two-toned like that, they could be splashes.

As for the buffs, yup, I agree. As for beards, not huge ones, but I see a beard under their chin, and the white one, #9 I think, on the left has muffs under its eyes.

They're all very pretty!

Here's one I just took a couple of days ago to show beard/muff.

Some more beards/muffs. Some of the buff ones are buffs, but mostly red pyle silkies. Almost impossible to tell them apart. IMG_3315.JPEG

If she doesn't accept them, will she hurt them or just ignore? Should I offer them and watch what happens in the daylight or sneak them under her at night in her nest?

Im in east texas and its 85 D now and 65 D throughout the night

That depends on the hen. If they reject, most don’t do it very calmly. Some take it as far as killing the chicks, others peck until the chicks get away, others will just get up and leave.
You know better than us what your hen might do, since you know her better. Not even you will no for sure until you try, though.

The sooner the better. I’d personally try to do it while she is sitting, place them under her and see how she reacts. That might not work if she’s wild though.
Some people swear by placing chicks under hens at night, others do it all times of the day. I tend to prefer the day, because I want to remove the chicks as soon as possible, or be there to intervene
