Well good morning! Long time no talk....I am exhausted from the fair for sure. I just read a little of the back pages...see there is a new member in the last pages--welcome Breac! I just have to type this one thing that happened to me yesterday and then go to work. (I slept late so had to juggle clients--forgot that I usually take Monday after the fair OFF!)
So I am in the chicken barn and this woman introduces me to Dennis from South Beloit. He says he is very interested in buying my Welsummers cause he cant find any to buy anywhere. We talk for a while and he says he wants them for eggs and they would be in his basement but he doesnt overwinter birds because he doesnt have a heated coop and the roo would lose his magnificent comb....we talk about ventilation...I am still not seeing too many red flags at this time....then when I told him I kind of wanted to take them to Portage to see what they would do against more competition he says "oh you would have them back by then." (What???) Since when if you sell birds do you get them back? This made no sense at all! I told him several times we should exchange numbers or emails and we could decide something after the fair. "but I have boxes here now and with the gas prices I couldnt come back out here...I want to buy them now and take them from here." Then I was getting a creepy feeling....so I said I would be back at take down later and we could talk then. He said he wasnt going anywhere....creeeepy! So I call my good friend H&R (who always answers her phone!
) and tell her the situation. She is thinking he was going to show them in another fair or something and then give them back. She recommends not selling to him.
I start thinking...just what does a frozen comb have to do with egg production anyway? Is he selling eggs on ebay? The hen is still a pullet and not laying but he was saying she will start any day...this is TOO WEIRD! I go back to get my birds and he is there and I tell him that the breeder advised me not to sell the birds and if he was still interested to sell them as 2 year olds. He started with just wanting them for a little while for a few eggs and I said "but why would you want chicks if you cant keep them over winter anyhow? He says he has a buddy that keeps them for him and changed up the story a bit...I finally said that they are NOT for sale! The superintendent said that this guy was trying to buy her birds too and also many others in the barn...
What opinions do you all have of this? OK--I will read back and see what is going on later...and type LOTS more! (bet you cant wait!) I have missed all of you terribly! Have a fantastic day! Terri O
TO - that sounds very strange. I don't know what he meant by not overwintering his birds... does he kill them and eat them or does he just give them back? Sounds like he was trying to scam you for some reason or another. Just what that reason is would be beyond me from what you are saying. There's tons of weirdos out there.... And they walk among us.
Can I just say that I am in LOVE with the ducks I got last night?! LOVE LOVE LOVE
Goth - did you see the link that I posted that I saw on MWT??? Where are you located?
RUN TO RUN! Sounds really flakey to me. I recently went through a learning experience and should have trusted my instincts. nonsuch had to laugh at your squito comments. Went out to pick berries yesterday [only got a half a cup] Had them up my nose and in my eyes, one even nailed me on my eyelid. Should know better than to pick with my eyes closed!
And the deer flies!
Thought yup it's almost time to pick berries with all the bugs.
Dornes- I saw the post but I don't think it's our puppy. We live in Manitowoc which is a long way from there and I don't think she would have gotten that far in such a short period of time.
as a matter of fact, I am extremely color blind.. Yeah, lavender is the color,, I'll take anybody's word for it..
Yeah, I got your ICE CREAM right here.. just another one of your false promises.. BTW, did you know there is NO ice cream shop in Elcho ?? just wanted to mention that again..
anyway, I told Brian that you were looking for a hen.. he will check it out with the people.. of course, I will have to remind him a few times.. so be patient..
TO, You should have put a real HIGH price on those chickens.. Price always deters those creeps.. I am thinking he just wanted some to eat, and he would never pay much for them.. Or,, he is just f^%*!g nuts..
I got all the tomatoes mulched .. well, except for the 6 in the afterthought section of the garden.. that is where all the late donated plants are.. waaaay back in the last row next to the field corn..
too wet to drive there.. we had an inch of rain at 3am today..
Lightning hit channel 7 and they had to wing it with live TV ..It was like a step back in time.. no commercials or tapes.. just two guys talking and trying to fill up a couple of hours of air time..
I am going to the steel yard to find 27 stakes for the 27 tomatoes.
I think re-bar will do the job..
Annie accidentally let the Delaware rooster and the new peacock out this morning.. surprisingly, the peacock just waked around the yard and investigated the new digs,, and more surprising,,, the roosters did not get into a fight.. the peacock is back in the pen, but the rooster is out,,as long as he behaves..
Well a large number of my bales are wet...and the ones I got before the weekend are wet.. I can't put them in the hay mow.. and will have to cut the twine to dry them out a hair, or Just cut the bales and put them in the round bale feeder. Luckily its for only 2 horses.
I went to work SOAKED, and in the blinding rain stopped at where the chickens are and was trying to get the tarp on the hay better...
I put a bit of diesel in my gas tank.. in the blinding rain, luckily it spilled out and I saw the dye on it as it came out. So then I grabbed the regular fuel and put that in.
I then made it to the gas station and put in a high octane fuel. So far so good, I have driven the car quite a few miles and I hope I thinned out the diesel, I have also started and restarted the car a half
dozen times so I think I am OK...
