Well it's been almost 72 hours and no puppy.

We had a friend tell us about a dog in a rescue that might fit our family perfectly. He is a senior and completely trained, great with cats, dogs, and small children. He was surrendered because his owner went into an old age home. The rescue is also willing to allow us to do a trial period to make sure our big male gets along with him and to see if our Beagle is found. This way we can try the dog out and start getting him adjusted but if we find our puppy or if our adult doesn't like him he can go back to the shelter. Even if it doesn't work out it will be a nice vacation for the old guy to get out of a little shelter cage for awhile. We were pre-approved to adopt him and we can go pick him up as soon as we find time. I don't want to feel like I am jumping into another dog but I don't have a ton of time before the baby arrives and DD has been crying all the time because she misses her puppy. She used to take her for walks, play with her, and cuddle on the couch. I also miss having a dog inside for company. This dog is about 10 years old and just needs a place to live out the next few years of his life and relax. He can handle short walks but needs a slow pace which is great for my daughter. He is also completely housebroken and unresponsive to other dogs. He is submissive or dominant, he just doesn't care. I guess they have been using him to temperament test the other new dogs because his is so well behaved. He has been at the shelter for awhile because no one wants old dogs. And a plus side is that his adoption fee is under $40 because of his age.

Puppies are so much work. If I could adopt all the senior dogs waiting in shelters, I would; they deserve a couple golden years at the end. Sounds like this may be just what you need Goth. I hope it all works out for the best.

Does this sound like mites/lice? Very low egg production from 1-yr-old hens (5 or less per day from 15 birds), lots of missing/broken feathers on back/chest/head, red and irritated skin on the bare spots. I dusted everything and everyone with DE last night. Don't wanna use any 'cides' if I don't have to. Or could it be disease?

Goth, that dog sounds absolutely ideal for you & your family. Older dogs make such wonderful pets for people with small children, and they will become very protective of your kids. Plus they're already trained & not as high strung. I don't think you could do much better than that.

I still really hope your puppy is found, and maybe this old guy would be a good influence on the youngin', should you decide to keep them both. Either way, I really hope things work out for the best for you. I feel so bad for your daughter. I bet she'll really love this new dog. I sure would.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. He is a 10 year old Husky. He still has enough energy to go a couple blocks each day but that's about all he can take because his hips aren't as strong as they used to be. I just have to set up a time to meet him now.

So sorry to hear your little beagle hasn't turned up/simultaneously pulling for the old guy. Love those senior dogs.

Ultrasounded Miss Bubbles today and we've got teeny tiny little aussie puppies growing.

Yay! Always nervous on those AI breedings until I see pups, but looks like a good number. Darn ultrasound probe couldn't tell me gender or color, though.

Really hoping there are a couple nice red / red merle females brewing. Fingers crossed. Should be a pretty litter, no matter the color/gender, but if I have my absolute choice, hoping for a couple pretty red merle girlies. This is for a potentially 4 color litter (blue merle/black/red merle/red) genetically so it'll be fun. Never know what you'll get with these guys.

Not sure if I've put up photos, so ignore this if I have, but here are pics of the parents.

Been holding back some eggs the past day or two. Got a blue Ameraucana hen gone determinedly broody, so think I'll slip a few eggs under her. Have some Marans, some EEs, and a few teeny lavender bantam eggs that I want to try under her, what a mix! LOL Need to get my broody box moved out of the garage so I can get her nestled into it.

Don't have any bum teeth or eyes currently, so I don't get to join the clubs. My shoulder hurts today though, does that count?

DH texted me that my antigen arrived...he met the UPS driver and got it in the fridge for me, bless him. Should be ready to roll for testing, maybe get the adults done this weekend for a little chicken practice.

So I am on my way to Madison to get Elaine's bad a$$ BR hen. I have to go there anyhow for parrot food so I figured I would give her a chance in my laying flock. I just love Barred Rocks. SO I guess I will get going...then I can catch up again and maybe get to comment on stuff...and I need to take a pic of my trophies to share with all of you. GC-good luck on the older feller. I hope it works out for you. Older dogs make the best choice for families that can't dedicate the special time a puppy takes. I love adopting the older crowd. When I helped work rescue for out feed/pet store, it always was surprising to find how many families did not want to adopt a puppy. We'd get some pups every now and again, but mostly the dogs were 1 to 2 and occasionally we'd take a great older dog that was headed for doggie heaven. Those were golden because once we'd just mention the dogs sad story, those dogs got a home. Pronto.

So I put two golf balls in the Hen Pen and they were like cool "food"! But them they got bored with them so I hoping that they have lost interest in round objects to they will leave the eggs alone! Oh! My little Barred Rock pullet that had trouble with the heat is still alive!! She is looking good and is eating well and talking up a storm with the rabbit a few cages away!! I'm so happy that she made it!!

MLH It works great to cover the entrance to the nest boxes with a curtain. The hens will still go into lay, but it helps to deter the egg eaters. Egg Suckers can't eat eggs they don't see. I simply hang the material all the way across the front of the nests and simply make a slit in the middle of each nest for entrance, and collect often. One can teach others bad habits in a hurry....as you know.
I had ahen that was relentless years ago...I finally had to cull her. I'm not about to sell a hen like that...useless and costly.

AMY I'm a firm believer in 5% sevin dust for lice and mites. If the de fails, i'd give it a try. I never dust my birds, but simply add some to their dusting holes, stir it in and allow them to get it done. I add some once a month during the summer and don't worry about it during winter. I've never had lice and mites here. It must be the 5% sevin, eh!

GC Good luck with the old boy. Sounds like he might fit right in. To bad about the pup...prolly still hunting and will come back if he's not lost.

Good to hear you didn't lose Ken's new bird Jim! The skeetos are really naasty, eh!
