Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I just got a call that the farm dog at where I keep the horses was killed last night on the road, a little ways away from the farm.
Some one it seems swerved to hit him. He was very old, starting to go deaf, but still invaluable in keeping the horses away from an open gate and away from the tractor
when hay was being fed.
Rufus and my dogs would play, and last night they did.. my Lexi is going to be looking for him and wonder where he went...

That's so sad. Especially when your dog is going to be looking for him.

Jim, here is a quote from the MN malamute club about Flystrike:

The blow fly is attracted by the smell of soiled skin or coat, and lays its eggs directly on the affected area. In as little as 8 to 12 hours, the small, white eggs hatch into larvae, which are known as maggots. Maggots need food, and to satisfy this need, they feed on the animal’s flesh. Although they initially feed on the diseased or soiled area, they will soon spread and start to consume healthy tissue. If left untreated, death occurs in 3-5 days, due to loss of fluid and blood proteins. It is a major problem for sheep and also for rabbits, but it can occur in all animals, including cats and dogs.

I recently had a duck get this and die. They layed the eggs in the poop on his butt and spread from there. It took too long for me to realize that this was the problem. I get really annoyed with people that advise others to not worry too much about maggots because they only eat dead tissue. Meanwhile, the animal is being eaten alive.

It is very sad about the poor dog getting hit, however why was he running loose, especially at night? The old saying "Parents, do you know where your Children are" also applies to animals. It's like turning a two year old Child loose next to the Interstate Highway and hoping they won't venture out into traffic. My puppies are sold with contracts stating that they will be on a leash or in a fenced yard. Even Rescue Organization will not place dogs in homes where they are allowed to run loose. The Dogs suffer in the end.

Awe So sorry about your dog.

Poor thing and he looks like such a sweety.

Will never understand the mentality of people that swerve to kill animals.

I had to do a sad thing this morning...after reading a thread yesterday about letting animals suffer and doing the right thing etc I decided to put Turk down.
hit.gif
I brought him out this morning and gave him some scratch and a drink of water and let him try to wander around a bit. He would start out fine and then curve around and end up on his side with his legs kicking. It was like he had no equilibrium (either that or was very drunk) I had had him in the chicken hospital for nearly a week and he was not getting any better, just worse...so I guess I did the right thing. (still yucky though)

Sorry about the losses...Carol how do you know a person swerved to hit the dog? Maybe they swerved to avoid him? Still is crappy that he got killed, but I too believe that a dog should be in with his family at night or safe in a kennel. Poor Joan.
Now a kitten Cind? There sure seem to be a bunch of kittens around lately...NONONONONONONONO! (just be telling my self that I will not adopt one!)

Deb--you can come here and houseclean and garden to your heart's delight at any time you want! I will even feed you!

Well I guess I better get off to work...the torts are loving that their hibiscus is in bloom and also that "Stuart's Rose" is continuing to produce flowers. Man, they sure love rose petals! Have a fantastic day! Terri O

Hello all.

So anyway, I'm still alive and able to sit up and take nurishment !!

Anyway, got good news, bad news and real sad news.

I'll start with the good news. Got about 10 white showgirl silkie chicks that the 5 mama's hatched. Two are silkies the rest are showgirls. Not sure exactly how many. They keep running and hiding under their mothers.
love.gif
Oh and I have 3 mixed color showgirls that I got from a buff/reddish silkie hen and a nonbowtie white showgirl rooster.
love.gif
Cutier then Sh1t !!
And one lonely white silkie chick. Mama is still sitting on eggs so ?????
I will start pulling eggs today. I don't need any more chicks around here !!!!
he.gif
It was to hot to ship eggs so I didn't collect one day. That lead to two days etc and well you know it is hard to take eggs away from a broody hen knowing what's inside !!!
love.gif

Other good news. We went down to Kenosha on Sunday for my nieces babies baptism. We were going to leave Saturday afternoon after we watered and fed all the critters. Well that didn't happen. WE HAD NO WATER !!!!
barnie.gif
Long story short the pressure switch on the holding tank needed replacement. So DH ET had to drive to town and get the parts and then come home and fix it.

So we left around 11pm !!! Got to bed at my house in Racine (which will be for sale soon I hope) at 4:30am !!!! Alarm set for 7:30am. I was still awake at 6:30am
barnie.gif
So I am lucky if I got 45 minutes of sleep that morning !! I did the driving, 250 miles cause, well just cause. We didn't want any of that "And the fight started"
lau.gif

Baptism went very well. Addie is 8 months old and was very good for the whole church service. They were trying something new at the service and there was alot of singing !!! We sat a few pews behind her and her mama, my niece, would nod her head with the music and Addie would try to do it to !!! It was adorable
love.gif
So needless to say I didn't do any singing, I always lip it anyway !!!
gig.gif
I thought for sure she was going to start crying when the pastor took her and layed her on her back basically to get her near the bowl of water !!! He was smart enough (like he's done it before
gig.gif
) to turn her so she could see Mom and Dad !! Boy I can't believe how much water he used. He has big hands. He cupped the water of course 3 times. Her head was soaked. It was hotter then a pistol that day, 90 something
somad.gif
Betcha that felt good !!! Took comunion, been a long time !!!
hide.gif

So from their we went to nieces house. Everyone had traveled at least 4-5 hours for the baptism. So, poor Addie was passed around all day !!! I let DH ET hold her since he has never met her til Sunday. He fell in love
love.gif

We were going to drive home at 3pm Sunday so I could get home to watch the Batchlorette (yeah I know
idunno.gif
what can I say, I was hooked) but I knew we shouldn't be on the road being so tired. So we deiced to take a long nap and leave at 10pm again. As soon as we hit the pillows we were out !!
Ended up getting home up here at 4:30am again !!
More of the bad news. One of our Great Pyrenees got loose and looks like she took care of about 6 chickens. Some roosters. One being my gold laced Polish roo !!!
hit.gif

So needless to say, I had alot to do when I got home and I am still pooped. I was still recovering from my mini road trip I took a week ago !!
th.gif

Nope not fencing yet, haven't even started. DH ET is still working on my round pen. Decided to use the tractor to level the area out. Well, he is getting a bit carried away. Huge piles of dirt !!
Of course Rocks etc Now just to find some sand, CHEAP !!!
So the fence in on the list, as is fencing in the camper coops. We are losing to many chickens these days from predators !!

So that was all the good news and bad news.

Now for the very very sad news. I got a call Sunday from my sister. She asked me if I remembered the little neighbor boy, Jonathan, that played with my neices when they were young and I of course remembered him. He was an adorable little boy with dark hair, big brown eyes and a beautiful smile. I always thought he would be a good match for my nieces he was so cute, and a very nice boy too.
love.gif
Then she told me that he was killed in a car accident early Saturday morning. (he is now 30 yrs old) Some of you may have read about it or saw it on the news. He went thru a stop sign and hit the arches to the entrance at Alpine Valley.
I know it has been years since I saw him but I can't seem to get it off my mind this week. I remember going to a petting farm with him and my nieces. I took a picture with the two girls and Jonathan standing with their heads between two big trees. I'll have to try to find that picture and send it to his parents. Poor poor parents, he was an ony child.

Jim Sorry to hear about Ken's brother passing away too. We all know that we aren't going to live forever but it sure is sad when the end does come no matter when or how it happens.

The real weird part of this is when I was driving down to Racine I was very very careful. I kept thinking we didn't need to get into an accident. Then I hear this. I've had these feeling before. Kind of freaks me out.

So, been an emotional week, highs and lows that is for sure.

My cart was ordered over a week ago so I thought I would call and find out the status last friday. No answer at the Amish in OH. Called Monday, Tues, Weds. Left messages etc.
Got a call this AM, my cart is scheduled to be shipped on the 17th !!! Just in time for my Birthday on the 24 th

WC, that is so sad about Rufus getting killed on the road
hugs.gif
We keep our dogs tied for that very reason. I know alot of people don't like that idea but we have 80 acres and there is no way possible to fence them in. My Great Pyrenees will meet cars on the gravel road. He hears them come and will beat them to the driveway. He will just stand in the road. The neighbors dog was hit last year by another neighbor, small country roads. And they knew he runs out and chases cars but still managed to hit him. He did stop and tell them that he hit the dog TG so there were able to get him to the vet. Went to a horse vet and he put a cast on. Poor thing the leg didn't look right for quite some time. He is finally doing better. They live about a mile away and he would pick up the neighbors dog and then come over to play with Rex the GP. They would take him to the swamp to get full of mud then bring him back home, then go home themselves. Finally put a stop to that.

Well, gotta run
lau.gif
lots to do today like pick up rocks in the round pen etc ................................
