Sure you will have dreams tonight of all your luscious veggies. Me on the other hand will probably dream about all of those snakes you were talking about tonight !!!

WCC Yep I have tons of roosters. I haven't offcially counted yet but no way did I hatch out 50/50. Maybe more like 70/30 ???? I don't know if I even want to know how many extra roos I have.
I'm going to try to get some different colored showgirls going so I am going to pair up some silkie roos with some showgirl hens. Have to sit down and plan that all out yet. I'm in no hurry to cull the silkie roos yet. My silkies have stopped laying for the most part but I would think they will start laying soon. Most of my birds are young or younger and still laying.

Jim I think a hat band made out of guineas would look good on your new straw hat !!! When was your birthday ? You didn't mention it or did you ?

Speaking of incubators, I have to clean mine out and pack it away before the bug bites me again !!

I know as far as fishers go up here they SSS. We never have though. Never saw a fisher and I don't want to either !! They are viscious and will kill your cats and dogs. I've heard they will come right on to your porch and snatch up your dog.

I'm glad I don't have to make that decision !! So far we've only had the fox that we know of. I did see a hawk fly over the pasture today so ???? We've lost alot of birds this year to predators but again I think it is the fox family !!

We let the horses out on the new pasture today !!! Boy did they have fun. They were running back and forth and the POA pony lead the herd !!! I'll try to post some pictures. I took mostly videos and I don't think I can post them here. I'll try to learn how to post them on YouTube. I had two cameras out there but one didn't record alot of what I thought it was !!!!

Looks like sometimes they are selling the whole hackle or saddle area from what it looks like. I think skin attached ? May be wrong though. That is why I would skin and tan them. Sell the whole skin ???? Just a thought. I"m still investigating.
That guy in Menomonee Falls has an Ebay store. As I was glancing over what he sells I noticed he has tanned horse hide with the hair on. It is scrap pieces. You can see that they were scraps from hides they had cut used to make things or ???
Small pieces. Forgot now what they were selling for but that kinda grossed me out.

FT- PLS PLS remember that there are fall sugars in the grass as well as sugars in the grass in the spring.
THose sugars can cause founder, so be cautious letting the pony and any fat horses out on the grass for too long. Not what you want to deal with any time of the year.
There was an article on it in one of the horse mags...
Just an FYI

We went for a late trail ride yesterday and got home after dark. They comepletly changed the layout of a challenging trail at a county park near us. DH's first time there, his horse has been lots of times with me though.
I will post a few pics of the ride when I get back from a Dr. appt, a yearly one for my shoulder.
Laters.

WCC, thanks for the reminder. I'll try to find that article. They weren't out on it all day. Maybe an hour or so. They did alot of running around and investingating so they weren't eatin the whole time. It is not lush rich grass either but I do know what you mean.

I also want to find out what times of the day are best to let them out. I read a real good article about when the sugars were highest etc but can't remember now.
So we'll let them out everyday for the same amount of time, then increase it every week right?

Thanks

All of you horse experts will have to explain to me what we have done to the genetic makeup of the horse that makes it unable to consume grass unless humans monitor their consumption.

How in the world did they ever survive without our interference.

Well Good Morning Everyone! Haven't read any of the pages that were posted since I left so I'm out of the loop! Up Nort was better than great! We could have filled a 6 gal pail with undersized walleyes. A lot of 10-11" and 13-14" fish. Only one legal came home with us a nice fat 19" that L caught. Natch
he.gif
At least we caught fish! My home puter went haywire last night so I'm on the laptop which is a whole new thing for me
hu.gif
The kids did good while we were gone though Peatwo has lost more feathers with his moult. But he was sure glad to see me he wasn't too po'd. Nice to wake up to his crowing, I actually thought I heard him Thurs morning up there. So now the camper is all set up and ready for a return trip which is gonna happen very soon! Better get caught up on my other E's.

good morning,

have to hurry a bit today.. have to go to my sister's home and see what I can do to get her car fixed.. She had it to two garages and all they did was charge her $$$ and not fix the problem..

I turned the cluck with 4 guinea keets loose .. they are staying with her very nicely.. and last night she found a corner behind the door in the chicken coop, so she is doing a good job.. she is one of my oldest buff orps.. been around this block a few times.

my b'day is 9/11.. It is not too late to send gifts.. LOL

Dr H, this fall fishing is the best.. the lakes are so quiet with no boats or crotch rockets running around..eh?

I better get going,, later....

I'm wondering the same thing! We want to get a horse and a mule but it sounds like anything and everything can hurt or kill a horse! Maybe I just need to get goats again. They were easy.

That's what I thought when I got goats !! But after reading up on them they can have just as many problems.

Knock on wood I haven't had any...YET !!

I found an old horse Illustrated magazine that explains the grass founder issues. It explains it very well however it is from 2007. I know there has been alot of research since and I did get an email from a very savvy horse friend a while ago about it. I will look it up later today.

Bottom line is of course the overweight easy keepers, older cushings, insulin resistent horses as are drafts, morgans, arabians and donkeys but any horse can founder.
The article gave an example of 2 younger arabians that foundered and the older arabian and another overweight horse didn't.

The newest research from my understanding (will do more reading) is the cooler weather grasses make them more likely to founder. It is the high fructan levels that are in the grass as different times of the day. Testing the grass is not a way to avoid the problem since the fructan levels change depending on the weather, night time temperatures etc. If night time temperatures fall below 40 degrees and the days are hot and sunny the high levels of fructan stay in the grass. So spring and fall are the worst times. Figures I just get the pasture done. But the nights haven't dipped that low yet TG !!
Also stress like drought, over eating pasture can change the levels as well, not in our favor !!
th.gif

And the list goes on and on. So if the night time temps have stayed above 40 degrees, the days are cooler and cloudy I think it will be safer to let them out. For short times. I'm also going to let them out after they've eaten hay (WCC and TO correct me if I'm wrong please, or anyone else for that matter). If it gets to the hindgut to soon it will ferment there and cause the endotoxins to enter the blood. The endotoxins affect the cadiovascular system, restricing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the feet.........................and so on !!!
barnie.gif

So, with that said, I think I'll have to get up early in the mornings to let them out for a very short time. And not at all when the night time temps get to low !!! GEEZZZ More and more homework to do, Never a dull moment hey ???????
th.gif

Then of course there are the toxic weeds you need to watch out for. I have milk weed up here, dog bane and choke cherry trees !!!!
th.gif

I'll try to find the article and post for anyone else.

PS My neighbors horses are out on pasture 365 and no problems, that isn't my luck. Plus they have been on so long that there are alot of weeds. She just says they build up an immunity (sp) to the toxic weeds !!!!
barnie.gif
I gave up along time ago telling them how I was going to do things around here. They also use barbed wire and an energizer with it !!!!

good afternoon, I just got home from my sister's.. all I determined is that something is draining the battery with the key off.. the battery is in good shape.. somebody wlse will have to trace down the short, or light that does not go off, or whatever..

I gave my opinion, but she did not agree with it.. she has an electric door opener/closer that does not work.. but she said that it never did work for a long time.. OK, then go look for something else.. I give up..

this grass feeding to horses.. keep in mind these words: (in excess) when dealing with horses..

If you are going to panic about all that is written that can go wrong, then you might as well give your chickens, dogs and all other animals away.. and don't eat any cranberries yourself,, it causes cancer in rats..

when I was but a young lad, my friend's dad had horses..Lots of them.. I can remember numbers like 50 to 60 of all sorts and sizes.. I cannot remember ever seeing a dead one.. and hardly ever a sick one.. Vets? out of the question , they cost money..

If horses have a choice, they will not eat noxious weeds.. only the starving ones will eat what is not good for them..

or like somebody said, maybe all that good horse sense is bred out of them..

I don't know if this is true, but I had a neighbor who had a lot of respect for mules.. He claimed that you could never work one to death, nor would they ever founder..

IMHO
