Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

First load of stewed tomato's is processed...just waiting for the pressure to drop. MY usual burner got the canner up to 13 pounds for a bit so I guess I have to figure out another one to use...I had some left over-mostly juice, so I added the corn kernals stripped off a cob, a diced Roma, more green pepper and thickened it all with s bit of cornstarch and a piece of my bread from the freezer. Sprinkled some swiss cheese on top...MMMMM! What a fabulous lunch! Guess I wont need dinner now! Back to the garden for me! Terri O

Jim he thinks it can do the same work as his 100 plus hp Case. Complains that he can't drag whole 20" trees with it. And doesn't like not having power steering. WAA! It also has a set of heavy duty pallet forks with a high backstop, he tries to pick trees with and back end gets light. I told him to cut them in half.

I'm so glad I'm done canning!

DrH--how in the world are you done canning already? Do you only make pickles and tomatoes? Today besides the stewed tomatoes I did 4 2C bags of duck and I am waiting for the broth to get cold again and then I will strain again and can it up--prolly 3 Qts worth, then I did some zucchini corn salsa that you can put on grilled chicken or eat with chips...I had so much juice left that I made some bloody Mary mix out of it...got a quart or so. I mixed a little can of V-8, some vodka, ice and celery seed in an A&W mug--MMMMM! The mix is darn spicy and my lips are burning! But oh is it good!

The little quail that had splay leg died today. We had tried to tape the legs but he just couldnt get the hang of it after a day so I removed it and the leg just kept going further and further up and to his back. I was kind of glad he passed because I was going to take care of him tonight...I hate culling babies!
*plink* I just love that sound! THe canning thread is talking about vanilla pear butter...might have to try it with the last of the pears on the tree. There goes another one!

Yup--one of the best noises there is I think!

Well, getting dark (and smokey again) so I guess it is time to go out and lock up. Anyone else notice the smoke in the air from the wildfires in MN? I hear that Rhinelander had ash falling...I thought my neighbor was burning something nasty but I heard on the news that it was from MN. It was hazy this morning then clear afternoon and now it is back...really stinks too! DD25 said that in town it smelled like a campfire...maybe the neighbor is using it to his advantage and burning up all the tires he has over there...

I swear he burns EVERYTHING!

Have a great night! Terri O

That's what I thought when I got goats !! But after reading up on them they can have just as many problems.
barnie.gif
Knock on wood I haven't had any...YET !!

I found an old horse Illustrated magazine that explains the grass founder issues. It explains it very well however it is from 2007. I know there has been alot of research since and I did get an email from a very savvy horse friend a while ago about it. I will look it up later today.

Bottom line is of course the overweight easy keepers, older cushings, insulin resistent horses as are drafts, morgans, arabians and donkeys but any horse can founder.
The article gave an example of 2 younger arabians that foundered and the older arabian and another overweight horse didn't.

The newest research from my understanding (will do more reading) is the cooler weather grasses make them more likely to founder. It is the high fructan levels that are in the grass as different times of the day. Testing the grass is not a way to avoid the problem since the fructan levels change depending on the weather, night time temperatures etc. If night time temperatures fall below 40 degrees and the days are hot and sunny the high levels of fructan stay in the grass. So spring and fall are the worst times. Figures I just get the pasture done. But the nights haven't dipped that low yet TG !!
Also stress like drought, over eating pasture can change the levels as well, not in our favor !!
th.gif

And the list goes on and on. So if the night time temps have stayed above 40 degrees, the days are cooler and cloudy I think it will be safer to let them out. For short times. I'm also going to let them out after they've eaten hay (WCC and TO correct me if I'm wrong please, or anyone else for that matter). If it gets to the hindgut to soon it will ferment there and cause the endotoxins to enter the blood. The endotoxins affect the cadiovascular system, restricing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the feet.........................and so on !!!
barnie.gif

So, with that said, I think I'll have to get up early in the mornings to let them out for a very short time. And not at all when the night time temps get to low !!! GEEZZZ More and more homework to do, Never a dull moment hey ???????
th.gif

Then of course there are the toxic weeds you need to watch out for. I have milk weed up here, dog bane and choke cherry trees !!!!
th.gif

I'll try to find the article and post for anyone else.

PS My neighbors horses are out on pasture 365 and no problems, that isn't my luck. Plus they have been on so long that there are alot of weeds. She just says they build up an immunity (sp) to the toxic weeds !!!!
barnie.gif
I gave up along time ago telling them how I was going to do things around here. They also use barbed wire and an energizer with it !!!!

You do have a few things you can do.. 1- keep the pony and fat horses OFF the grass except for short time periods. 2- get grazing muzzles. 3- create cross fencing on your pasture, and let them out into smaller areas combined with MOWING.. even just a brush hog. and 4- wait till the dew is dried off the pasture then let them out.
IF you start with short time periods, combined with mowing, you should be able to start to leave them on it longer and longer.

BL4 said- All of you horse experts will have to explain to me what we have done to the genetic makeup of the horse that makes it unable to consume grass unless humans monitor their consumption.

Horses didn't need to be monitored back in days when they didn't have improved pastures that are seeded and fertilized and they could move from place to place when an area had been grazed down. And there were different species each eating different parts of the same field, some eating new growth, some eating weedy growth.. but with having each species kept in fences away from each other... and richer grasses available.. we have to monitor, its our responsibility to do so as we have become their god in a way, good or bad comes from us, discipline, treats, praise and punishment.

I realize this seems horrible, but slaughter gave a bottom to the horse market, when they closed the plants here in the US, it forced the transport of horses to other countries. The breed registries do NOTHING to curb the stop of unwanted horses to monitor and help stop the breeding of horses until things settle down, or . IF states OR the government were to set up licensing OR state owned studs (like those in Europe), and stringent testing of mares and stallions, and having stallions having to PROVE themselves before being allowed to breed, we wouldn't have as many unwanted horses and unwanted foals, starved horses, abandoned horses and horses would be worth something.Just a reminder, I got 2 well broke ponies for $40 apiece.. you normally wouldn't have been able to touch them as a team or as individuals for less than 300 or more just a few years ago.
Registries want money, they get that in registrations, transfers and other means attached to allowing rampant breeding.
A well known quarter horse breeder was quoted to say, " I breed a hundred bad ones for one outstanding foal". Those "bad" foals are sold for pennies on the dollar, IF that. Unhandled, ungroomed, not halter broke, loaded onto a trailer the same day they are weaned from mom, young enough to not need a coggins, with an application for registration (normal for alot of breeders)....some are sold to good homes, some are sold to be resold again...and some are left to their fate at the sale in the "loose" horse sale. With out a bottom to the horse market, there is no horse market, a few sell for good money, but most are being given away, and we HOPE they find good homes.
JMHO- Carol

Is anyone trying to change any of these practices ?

This weekend my sis asked how many birds I had...hmmm, I had no idea. So did a count and.......82!

Yup, addicted. Acing Advanced Chicken Math too. Now 6 will be going to Julie's, and assume half the new chicks are boys, but still. I think I can get it down to around 50 by spring, after processing, just in time for hatching season.

Just one of those things that seem good on first glance, but reality is a different story. That's what comes from treating the symptom instead of the cause.

TO, yes we have a hint of the MN smoke. I guess it was especially bad in Green Bay this morning.

I saw an ad on the Appleton CL today, someone is selling a trio of peafowl. I think they wanted $100. Reasonable, right?

dkvart, that's a great idea about the cards! I've seen like that some for sale at one of the feed stores, I think they go for $3+ a piece. You could put them on Ebay, or Etsy too.

Glad you're still with us Bigz. Heal up quick, huh?

TO, what do you put in your salsa recipe? Care to share?
My niece was up at the cabin this weekend too and she made some fresh salsa. Just puts tomato, red onion, fresh corn, fresh garlic and a bit of lime juice. Yum was it good !!! She is the one who can't eat gluten either.( sorry can't remember or should I say spell it)
She lives in River Falls and brought some sweet potato chips from Trader Joes !! Boy were those good. Of course expensive. But I guess the Trader Joe brand for $3 was a bigger bag then another gluten free brand.
She forgot to buy a green pepper so I guess she usually has one of those in it.

Didn't make the Zucchini soup yet !!

Went outside this morning and by the time I came in it was to late to even think about it. I took a long nap and woke up to my skin on fire. I got sunburn today !!
lau.gif

I said to DH ET I wish all summer was like today !! It was sunny and breezy !!! Guess tomorrow it is going to be very cool. I like that too !!! But won't last long up here !! Before you know it the snow will be here !!

Didn't smell one once of smoke up this way. We are 30 East of Rhinelander. I'll have to ask DH ET if he smelt it later in the day. I'll have to turn on the TV and see what's going on over in MN.
Also heard on the news last night that someone was killed in a 1 car rollover and another person badly injured in the accident. They didn't release the names. Sure hope it isn't anyone I know. Either way my thoughts and prayers are with the family. I just hate hearing this kind of news. We found out that the young man, Jonathan that was killed last month had fallen asleep while driving home from the family cabin up north. His passenger was alseep in the back seat. I guess he lived for fishing and going to the cabin. He was creamated and they scattered his ashes at the lake.

Looks like pizza tonight. We might have to cover our tomatoes tonight or won't have to many to make salsa with !! Hopefully it won't freeze

DK, that sounds like a terrific idea. I've seen some cards like that but can't remember where. Years ago I saw an ad in a magazine that was looking to buy pictures that they could use for puzzles ! Back then I really took my photography seriously with my 35mm slr camera. Always thought about doing that, then couldn't find the ad. You could maybe do puzzles too once you get started.

Ok, gotta go eat pizza and watch Jackie O special DH ET just told me was on.

Forgot to add: DrH, is that what got those roos going so early, the MOON?? Mine were having a contest at 3am. Shut the windows, then they must have gone back to bed. Nutty birds!

good eve, DrH, your friend could put fluid in the back tires . but lifting 20 ft logs is going to be extra rough on his loader and on the front axles and wheel spindles.. No wonder he wants power steering.. LOL

tomorrow we are going to freeze some corn.. pick the ripening tomatoes and cover the green ones..

I could smell smoke this morning,, I thought the neighbor started up his wood burner.. then I went to town, 10 miles away , and could still smell it.. when I met up with Annie coming from Mosinee 22 miles farther, she said she could smell it there too.. It must be grass fires, eh? Minn doesn't have the forest land like we do in wisc..

all the birds went in without a problem tonight..

no quail hatching going on with batch #2 yet..

I will have to look at that clist ad for peafowl..
