Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Yesterday I learned that I have wolves in my woods...yep, you read that right. So, on top of coyotes, hawks, a few eagles and now wolves, does anyone have a recommendation as to what type of wire to encase a run with? I've read that deer fence netting works wonders for keeping the aerial predators at bay, but regular chicken wire has too big of holes that can easily let 4 legged perps in. What do you all use to protect your flock?

no pics of the new dog yet.. maybe tomorrow..

I have her in the lean-to pen.. the geese and guineas were afraid to even walk past the pen.. I herded the geese and 3 turkeys past after dark..
I decided to close up the chicken pen with just chickens in there.. so I chased the geese into the guinea pen.
. Not a guinea in there.. I went searching with the flashlight.. all 30 of them are in the pine tree..
It was dark so I just left them alone.. I am sure I could not have chased all of them down, and the owl would take only one no matter how many are there..

CC, my large box of gifts must have gotten lost in the mail,, could you resend another one? did you get the gift I sent you?

Brent, I think your venzun costs a bit more than what you said..
$400.oo rifle, $10.000.oo pick up truck, 40 acres of land at $5000.oo/per acre ???

there is a football game going on tonight.. i THINK the winner will play the Packers ?? idk..
I have to pick up a 33 inch Northern tomorrow from sil's store.. Nephew is on vacation and will be fishing every day until after New Years day.. they don't eat fish.. that's OK, I don't mind cleaning a few fish..
He fishes on the Eau Pleine Flowage.. good water=good fish ...

Hi all!

Susie... sorry to here about all the losses in your family
hugs.gif
We had a year like that too.

TO... hope your friend got that bird. We had one get away from us when one of us was cleaning the cage and then one of the kids came in from outside. Came back to it's cage before dark though. And it wasn't this cold.

Jim... Hope you and your new doggie get to be good friends. What's her name?

BBP... Sucks about the truck.

CC... Glad your bunnie is getting better.

Tatters..... Get some 2x4 welded wire fencing and if you can, bury it about a foot down... lots more work but much safer.

I decided to let the guinea out of he cage in the "hospital room" with Tiny because they were acting like they wanted to interact. The guinea's abscess was still closing up and filling in spite of my best efforts. Tiny is feeling better and I was going to put her back out in the coop but the guinea seemed to like her company. Then I noticed after spending the night together, the abscess had gone down! Then I saw Tiny gently picking it. The guinea stood very still and let her. A couple of pecks then they went back to scratching.

hummm... Dr.Tiny!

OK, night all!

Good Tuesday Morning everyone !!

Well, Butt Dog and I made it home safely !! We are beat !!

TO your client sounds exactly like my Aunt !!! She buys and buys and buys groceries and then it all goes to waste. When you try to talk to her about it she goes on and on and saying "You've never gone without food, I have"

Well, I quit arguing with her years ago but it doesn't make any sense that if you've gone hungry during then why would you let food go to waste? She also agrees that it makes no sense !!

Then try talking to her about having things fixed around her house she says "That is coming out of my groceries " !! Like she is starving now !! She gets meal on Wheels now so she doesn't need to buy so much !!!
So of course she has fruit flys like crazy. My sister sprays for them but now while Auntie is watching.

We got home around 11pm or so !! Butt dog is passed out on the bed. I'm ready to hit the hay as well !!!

TO How were you going to make those waterers with the nipples? Were you going to use PVC pipe?

Tatters, we have very think wire that is I think 1" squares. It is very heavy duty. Normal chicken wire wil tear. Raccoons are know for doing that. As for the deer netting it will keep the flying preds away but it to is very easy to tear. If you use it for the tops just make sure you check it out on a regular basis. I'm not kidding, I tore ours with just my hands.

Can't think of what else I was gonna say.

Oh yeah, Jim, Now you need to go to Fleet Farm and buy your new dog a black leather spiked collar !! All of my big dogs wear one. Don't know if it will really work or not but the theory is the spikes will help keep the coyotes or wolves or whatever from getting a good bit of the dogs neck. Like said I"m not sure it if works or not and I don't want to find out but they look good with them on !!!
Oh that reminds me, our Chocolate lab is getting spayed on Thursday. So your assignment everbody is to remind me Wednesday !!

Oh and sad news, OM DH told me that one of my Peahens was dead this morning !!! So tomrrow I will have to take a look at her to see if she was on the thin side ???

Ok, Night all !!!

Good Morning All! FT tell your Aunt that apparently she hasn't gone hungry either cause if she had she wouldn't waste the food. Cind maybe thats what is needed, Tiny keeping it cleaned up. Kinda like a bird on a Rhino.

Jim good score on the Northern! Going over to the marsh on Thurs morning to get the hot spot low down. Can see why the PO is going under I didn't get my box either! CC probably didn't get hers also.
idunno.gif
Stupid PO! Tat I used chicken wire for the whole run including the top. Then 2x4 welded wire around the bottom buried a foot down in the ground. Bigz yup everything needs to eat but as they say "not in my backyard". Seems I remember reading those instuctions for the Poulan I had. That saw was the biggest pain in the patuty! I was constantly adjusting the carb, I'd get it set and head to the woods and it would need adjusting again. Carried a screw driver with me until I finally got rid of it. Spent more time adjusting than cutting. POS! TO any ideas yet on your egg code? I checked this morning, no pips yet

Gonna be a long 3 weeks! Think it's gonna be the Pack against the Aints or Niners in the big game. What do you think TO? FT?

Hello everyone... sorry to hear about the losses.

I am happy to say that I am now glad Christmas is over and all gifts are opened. Extended family means lots of driving and lots of stuff for the kids. They are happy and a little overwhelmed. We had my in-laws and one SIl over Friday to give presents to kids since they were big ( kids got a kid sized air hockey table for our basement) and they ended up staying for hours. I made a nice lunch and then ordered pizza for dinner.
Saturday we drove to Chicago to my other SILs house with her obnoxious kids and were there all day.
Sunday morning Santa came and my dd5 woke up with an earache. After lunch we drove to Milwaukee to my moms and ds5 had a severe headache. Had a rough day.
Monday we spent 3 hours in line at urgent care with him ( dd5 said she felt better) and he has a double ear infection and sinus infection. And last night hubby decided to fall in with the others and was miserable. I think he has a sinus infection too, but to get him to Dr office is a chore. So I left him home with the kids and went to work today! Peace and quiet!

On the other hand I am trying to decide what to do with our coop come spring now. Want to make a place that will keep silkies and bantams happy. Maybe a similar coop on the opporise side with a shorter ramp and lower nest boxes? DH said it is a go to improve the coop area and get some more layers ( and maybe another foo foo lap chicken for the kids) Hoping our chick is a hen... no comb yet at 6 weeks but slightly thicker legs. It is from Carol and a cookoo marans/EE cross. Cute!
have a great day

Ok, I don't know football but I know hatching and incubating and if you are looking for Pips after two days you need a cheat sheet !!!!
gig.gif
You should be looking for veining and not really until day 5 or older !!

Now back to the football
lau.gif
I'd have to say Niners in the big Game !!!!

(It if is it was a Lucky Guess !!!

)

Yeah and Auntie is 89.5 yrs old. So eating the way they did probably is what's contributing to her long life hey?
old.gif
She sure is going downhill fast. She can't see out of her right eye at all. She can't hear anything.
She did crack a funny. I drove her home on Christmas day from my sisters. My sister asked her if she wanted to go to the bathroom before she left (she is incontinent) and she said "No, I'll go on the way"!!! That was funny !!! Not to funny if it hit my seats though !!!!
gig.gif

CC Glad your Bunny is feeling better !!

Kristip Hope your family is feeling better soon, they have presents to enjoy !!! What a bummer that they were sick on Christms though.

Mail must be good up this way, I got Jim's Present !! Thanks Jim !!

I've decided I do not want to drive my car at night anymore. Either that or get my headlights worked on. For some reason one is brighter then the other (wiring problem, short???) and the lens on the headlights seems cloudy (cataracts ??
gig.gif
)

Someone told me they make a product that can clean them ???? Whatever it is I can't see the road very far in front of me and it is dangerous, plus I have a habit of holding my head up while driving so I'm looking through the middle of my bifocals and have to constantly remind myself to put my chin down and look through the top of the lens !!!!
gig.gif
It sucks getting old
old.gif

I can sure tell I'm not a city girl (but not 100% country yet, have a long way to go). The traffic drove me crazy (no comment) and there where people everywhere !!!
smack.gif
Plus if you wanted to to say it politely, Go Potty, you had to find a bathroom !!!
gig.gif

And my biggest Pet Peeve while in town is those Turnabouts or Roundabouts or whatever they call those things !!!! They are dangerous if you don't know where you are going !!!! Finally started getting used to them but by the time I go back I will have to start all over. Good thing my Auntie gave up driving, I don't think she would survive one of those !!
old.gif

Ok, gonna drink my coffee while it's hot and eat some more cookies. Have to get rid of them before the New Year !!!
Oh and family is coming up to the Cabin in Monico so looks like we will be going fishing this weekend. Unlike others we have to catch our own !!!! And I have to go to Suring and get the deer. May shoot down to Bigzios meat market and drop some off too, then hit his feed Mill and check that out.

Ok bye for now, have a good day everyone !!

Good morning all! Dreary here for sure...I am still having a ton pf probs with this virus! I now have my system restored to Dec 22 so hopefully that is before the problems started. And Yes DrH...all data was lost including the list I started with possibilities for your eggs!
he.gif
th.gif
So now I will start over today. Of course it was almost done but I wanted to go out to the coop one more time, I thought I was missing a roo on the list. It should go faster this time for sure.
I do not make football predictions guys...the last time I picked one the team won and then all the bookies were calling me cause they thought I had inside information (or was psychic) cause that team was not the favored one!

Got a call from my friend with the wild parakeet this morning. She didnt think the bird was still around cause she didnt see it yesterday afternoon but it was back again this morning! She said it was eating with a cardinal and they looked so pretty together...until the blue jay came and scared them both away. I am going over this morning with some spray millet to see if that will entice it. She said that the bird was very interested in the cage; I guess that is hopeful?

Day off today...I plan on getting this house cleaned up a bit...my brothers will be coming out on January 7th with their families so it would be nice to at least have a path!
th.gif
I kind of wish Christmas was in the summer...we have a really nice yard...

Tatters way too many preds for me! I have enough trouble with the owls and hawks. You probably have a ton more that you arent seeing too! It is going to be very costly for you to make a complete run with predator proof wire! If you are planning on letting the birds go in and out of their coop at will without locking them in for the night you will have to do a double wall at the bottom to about 2' up so coons and night things cant pull the birds through the wire. Of course you will have to bury a "skirt" around the outside too. If you will lock them into a safe coop during the night all that is probably not necessary if you are around most of the time. That heavy 1x1 square stuff is the way to go for strength though! I think it is in the dog kennel section of Farm and Fleet. $$$$ In runs that I have I used 2x4 wire. One suggestion I have is to make it tall enough for you to stand in it comfortably---and with a door big enough for a wheelbarrow or with a removable side so you can get one in! Same with the coop! Much easier on cleaning day hey folks? Good luck!

Whew...long phone call! BFF's Big 5-oh today....so now I have to run...talk later and have a great day! Terri O

Hi Cheesies - Hope all your Christmases were merry and bright. We were up north, where they actually had snow.

I have a problem in the coop. One of my EE's is sick: runny eyes and nose, sneezing, coughing, maybe off feed. I heard a sneeze or two at night, starting about a week ago, but was hard to pin down who it was. Put her in QT when I got home last night. I noticed at least one other bird has a little cough now too. Any clue what the treatment should be?? I did a search on here last night, and the first thread to come up said in case of respiratory illness to cull the flock.

Looking for a better solution.
