Wating for dinner to get done...about that temp thing. That is how it works with reptiles...I would imagine it would work with chicks too. Probably 99 degrees vz 100 degrees I would think. I will probably get ALL roos this time because my temps have been consistently high. Maybe that is why the wild chicken hatches mostly pullets? She is outside in the elements most of the time depending on where she places her nest...worth a try!

ok lots to say! and not alot of time
1 my mom and dad have given up on the idea of coming with us for dh's birthday. YAY! only because I WON her tickets to a weekend conference in Appleton and she decided to get a hotel. lol My brother and his fiance are going too. I get my niece! YAY!

anywho on to chickens, if you remember I left those silkies with 20 eggs, well I candled them and found that ALL but 3 eggs were bad.

I think they just got to cold. Oh well! these 3 eggs are due tomorrow. I think they may be internally pipped? we'll see tomorrow.

Do you really get a lot of pullets in your outdoor hatches? Well, that is good to know. And you'll have to keep us all informed what you get out of this incubator hatch, if you get a lot of roos or not. Very interesting.

I just had a thought. Perhaps I should have left Alice & her eggs out in the coop. But then they wouldn't be so friendly to us as they are. Nah, I'll take friendly roos. And stick them in MLHs car...................

What in the world are you thinking of breeding next? Shoot... Your chicken math makes my head spin....

What we want to know is: do CC and I have to road trip to flipping' Crandon and separate your Lavenders ourselves?! Honestly... If we're getting LOs in WI they shoud be from YOU. Get on the stick chick!

What lavender eggs do you have? silkies? Silkie Cochins? Cochin silkies? Cochins EE with a silkies head?

My surprises for the day: it cost $120.02 to fill up my truck. The second thing was not being able to get a physical appt with my dr until aug 21. Seriously?!

Technically lock down should be Friday. Do you think I would mess anything up by doing lockdown tomorrow instead? I have actually gone with dry incubation so far and figure the high humidity an extra day wouldn't hurt. But what about not turning the eggs for that extra day???

Of course, this is one specific bird with an unusual way to incubate eggs so I would not classify it along with your backyard flock. I would also like to know how many of the eggs that did not hatch are of the opposite gender that did......

I would have to say that 99% of the time, bird sex is determined by a gene, not incubation temperature. So don't play with your incubation temps.

I know, but they didn't move when I candled and they didn't hatch early like the rest of them. Btw just one survived.
Anyway, I don't have any lavender silkie babies yet. I only have a lavender rooster. Now if I get girls out of the lavender splits I can breed back to daddy and get lavenders. That is if they carry the lavender gene. Or breed brother and sister and maybe get lavenders.
Once I get laveders I will breed lavenders to lavenders and get lavenders !!! Some days I'm wondering if it is worth all the trouble. $228 at the feed store yesterday and I go every 2 weeks.

I read somewhere that when you breed blues that you will end up with some blues & some blacks, & maybe some splashes? Maybe the person you got the eggs from can't tell between a lav & a blue?

Anyway, you've got lav orp roos & a hen, so get with it anyway, woman! Spring will be sprung before you know it.

I have just a few words about hatching roos vs pullets.. I have heard that theory about the temp a long time ago.. I have heard that pointy ended eggs produce roos and more rounded pointy ends produce pullets.. don't bet the farm on it..

first of all. most of you are using LG or Hova or some other low end incubator.. nothing wrong with that.. but just by listening to many of you, just keeping a steady temp is a challenge. tell me, how are you going to control a +/- .5F.?

If the temp thing were true, do you not think the huge hatcheries would have that perfected by now? there is a reason that they hire people to sort the roos from the pullets..

my humble advice, shoot for perfect hatches and sort the results when the time comes.

BTW.. extra roos taste great !! and so do PB pigs..

I have to figure what I am going to do with all the turkey eggs... I think I have 6 hens.. 4 of them are laying already.. last year I could hardly get rid of a dozen young poults.. what will I do with four times that many?

I had a call from Marlene (the guinea lady) her guineas are laying already , too.. must be this mild winter.. my guineas are outside most of the time,, so they should not start for awhile..

I would like to make a nice outdoor yard for the quail.. or maybe I will just use one of the breeder pens after I am finished with the chicken sorting..

I had a lady email me about Delawares. she wanted to know if I would replace them if any died for odd reasons. what the heII is an "odd" reason,, and just exactly how long after she gets them is the warranty supposed to be good for ? doesn't anybody want to accept responsibility anymore? I did not answer the email yet.. I will word it a bit more diplomatically..
