Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

It's too bad you don't live closer (and would wait til June). You could have added to my order with my pet chicken. They DO sex their silkies and give you the money back for that chick if they're wrong.

I am getting 4 girls... White, Buff, Blue, and Black, and 1 Blue Roo. They are specifically going to be the kids chickens. But I may breed some blues or whatever silkies I want LOL. (I need FT to make me a great lavender silkie girl too!)

Our silkies are going to be mainly the kids fun chickens (well and mine)also. I chose to go ahead and do it now because we're going to Illinois in June for the weekend and didn't want to leave our neighbor with babies to take care of. I would love to breed some silkies, hopefully I'll get a girl lol.I checked craigs list first for silkies but all I could find were $10 and more chicks, talk about nuts. The order is due for Feb 29th.

So much to reply to !!

TO, no meat loaf here, just Aldi's pizza, the $3.99 one, we splurged !!! lol
I must have missed a post about your baby goat. So what happened ? How long does the mom have the colostrum? Poor baby.
Jim, I agree, I see what you are saying. Not just about the chick sex thing but everything. You and I think a lot alike sometimes, scary thought hey.

Hope your breeding "takes" tomorrow and there aren't any surprises with any mixed breed pups. Litters can have different fathers, but I'm sure you know that.

bf4m, you're funny. You want a lavender silkie hen and I don't even have one !!! I was looking through my old PM's and it will be a year in May that I had my lavender silkie roo sent from NY. Cost me close to $100. I only now have lavender split chicks.
Apyl that could by why the silkie chicks you saw on CL could be $10. Hatchery silkies aren't as nice as some breeders birds. Can't think of the words off the top of my head right now.
But if you don't care about that then go the cheap route.
I got some lavender (self blue) silkies from Ideal last year. Only 1 made it and it is a Roo of course but it doesn't look anything like a silkie !! No crest and short feathers. Not sure what I'm going to do with him. I might put him in with a silkie/cochin hen and see what they make. He hasn't started to crow that I've seen. Weird looking little bird.
On the other hand some hatchery silkies have turned out quite nice. It's a crap shoot. Plus you don't know if you will get bearded or non bearded from the hatcheries. You can get that with breeders chicks to but they should know what they will produce.

Bigz !! Sure keep rubbing it in about the Pig Roast !!!! I hope you get a Boo Boo bear, if you get one !!!

I happened to pick up the Backyard Poultry magazine at Fleet Farm too and it was a good one this month. You can access a lot of their articles online at
www.backyardpoultrymag.com just sayn !! lol I like it when you say that so I had to try it !! LOL

Talked to a woman with the NAPPA today. North American Pot Belly Pig Association. They have a spay/neuter program. They will donate $30 towards spaying or neutering your pbp.
Now just need to find the rest of the money by March 5th.

I tried to measure Porky around the waist tonight. He would have nothing to do with it. After a lot of snortin I gave up !! I love my pig. I need to calculate his weight so I can deworm him.
Oh and Raim, people say "worm" the animal but that would imply you are giving them worms. What they are really doing is "Deworming" them. But everyone just says worming.
Safeguard makes a liquid wormer for goats. You can also give them ivermectin paste for horses.
If you do that i believe you would give a goat that weighs 100 lbs a dose for a 400 lb horse.
So it is 4 times their weight. Valbazen is a good "wormer" that is used for cows and has just been approved for goats. It is expensive though but it will kill tapeworms, something the other two above won't kill. If you still have the links I gave you a few months ago check out what they have to say.
That person that you said hasn't dewormed in 7 years, well IMHO that is just their excuse for being negligent. If they keep telling themselves that they don't have to deworm them they'll believe it is the correct thing to do. That is their business but they shouldn't be advising other goat owners that they don't need to deworm theirs. Just sayin !!
Did you know WI doesn't have a Pig Sanctuary !! Maybe I should give all of my Roosters to CC and Bf4m and then start a donkey and pig rescue !!
What the heck, I'll take in goats, ponys, draft horses, guineas, peafowl and ducks too.
Oh wait, I already do that !!!

DH is laid off and after talking with Unemployment today, he doesn't qualify since he started on September 27th and some Quarter BS which I never understood.
Hopefully it won't be for to long, if it is I'll be downsizing. Spent another $228 at the feed mill yesterday and only $10 of it was for the pigs !!!
Getting real tired of feeding chickens. I love them but the feed bills are getting old !!

CC I got your PM that is a real good price for those Lav Chicks. Go for it !!! LOL I see the seller is a BYC member too.
Ok, time for a shower, then going to bed early or earlier then last night which was 5 this morning.

Oh Jim, don't forget to put a towel on the car seat !!! LOL

Thanks Cind

I just got some in the mail along with some diapers and i am so not happy with how they fit. And the small diaper just barely fits my 3 week old silkie chick !!!
Good thing I didn't spend a lot on them. Either I measured all wrong or ????? Oh well, I'll take your pattern and work from there. I have plenty of chickens to use for models !!! Some of all shapes and sizes !!

Ah, I didn't realize their were differences. Thats ok though, with this being our first time I'll take the cheap ones, plus to the kids they'll know no difference :)

FT.... This is all I could find right now, I have a "cleaner" copy of the the pattern but it's made the same..
http://backtobasicliving.com/blog/make-a-chicken-saddle/

I got "Duck Cloth" for mine because it's tough but thought doubled it might be too heavy so the under side is going to be lighter cotton.

I checked out the blog link, is this something that occurs alot? The pattern looks easy enough to make, do the chickens need them? Or is it more of a personaly thing. Doesn't the other chicks pick at the bright colors of it? Sorry for all the questions, I'm just interested.

Good Morning Everyone! FT I forgot Chuck was laid off. Hope they get him back soon! Wasn't he just working a lot of OT? CC was thinking the same thing about the aggravating things. If you don't like it change it, if you can't change it just walk away. [I have different words that I use for that last part]. And piggies in a blanket

Cind let me know when you can come and get the stove it's ready when you are. An appraiser is coming today to do the house for the refinance he asked when I would be here? I told him I'm always here unless I'm somewhere else.

Tiki good to hear from you hope you get that puter so you can get back here and keep these people in line! TO hope that kid survives! Can you milk the ewe and bottle feed it? IDK. The talk of meatloaf made me think of one that I have a recipe for. It's stuffed with ham, broccoli, and mozzarella.

Took the time to sit with the chicks yesterday. We had a ball! The big kids spent 3 hours playing in their new straw and rearranging the nest boxes to their liking. Think this new stove is going to save me about a third of the wood I use to use. Kinda hard to tell with this weather. Kripes only plowed twice this year.

Better get goin.

Aypl, don't get me wrong you can get some nice silkies from hatcheries. One of the things that is nice about them is often times they don't have as big of a crest or topknot which is actually better for pets. They make nicer pets iMHO because they don't have as many visions problems because of a huge crest blocking their vision.
That is one of the reasons silkies are nice for children is because of their limited vision from their fluffy heads they are easier for the children to catch. On the other hand if it is to big they don't see anything coming ie predators, dogs, cats, children and don't get out of the way in time to avoid danger. The silkies that are bred for show sometimes have huge huge crest and just sit around looking pretty.
You will have fun no matter where you get them from, silkies are cool. Just beware, they are addicting !! LOL
