Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I'm raising meat birds this year and decided to get Freedom Rangers instead of Cornish Rocks. They seem a little more "normal" but take a few weeks longer to grow out.

I giggled at the fat and gross comment. I'll be really interested to hear how it goes for you. I thought about it... But will actually wait until next year before I actually do it!

Mazo, good luck to your GF on becoming a midwife. We need more of them; I think mine is going to retire soon......

I missed this news somehow! I'm a crazy, mad supporter of midwifery. Especially of the homebirth midwifery sort.

I used to think I'd like to be a midwife. And maybe some day I may, but for now I'm settling for teaching childbirth education and being a La Leche league leader.

I've been a birth supporter a few times for friends and it's really hard to leave my littles in the middle of the night when all they want is to stay snuggled next to momma.

Quote: I literally laughed out loud at this!

Good afternoon--I am relaxing just a little bit before going in for the weigh out on our Slim Down Challenge. Watching the CBS news about Mike Wallace. A very interesting piece about his life and times with 60 mins and other things he did,
Now I need to go out and hang my sheets on the line and feed the horses, see if I have any more guineas, lock up the torts or really I should bring them in...oh yeah--gotta get the blankets out and cover my plants too....
BBL--Terri O

(PS) H&R...where and when will you be getting your meaties? I am thinking about trying again but in cooler weather so they dont smell so much! Maybe I can get mine in conjunction with you?

We will probably get them from Abendroth's again this time around but not sure of when yet- will keep you posted

I read this a couple of times to make sure you were actually going to wait till next year on an animal project....

Hi, there,

I live in the town of Mukwonago WI. I have never had chickens but would like to try. I live in a subdivision, in a 1+ acre lot. When I asked, the town was vague on the subject of backyard chickens. I only want to keep 4-6 chickens, no roos of course. A call to the town building inspector (apparently he is in charge of this), said that while I shouldn't have chicks (he couldn't state a specific law outlawing them in my area), he doesn't go around neighborhoods looking for chicken coops. He would only check if a neighbor complained. He did say that the subject had been brought up about a year ago at a town meeting by some citizens but a decision had not been made. I am tempted to just go ahead anyway. I can keep my coop somewhat concealed as my yard is surrounded by tall arbovite.I believe that even the people in Milwaukee can now have chickens. One neighbor won't care, the other is a jerk. It seems that my neighbors junk is not a problem for the town, but apparently chickens are! now I'm venting, sorry.
Please advise if you live in the town of Mukwonago, WI or Waukesha county.

Hi bj! I'm a noob too and in New Berlin. I have two hens, just got them in March. New Berlin allows 4 hens. As far as I know it was in the ordinance for a while.

Here is a link to your town ordinances. As far as I can see if it doesn't say you can't then you can.

You might want to check any building codes against what you want to build.

BigZ, by way of explanation: Maggie had a lice prob with her brand new duo... about a week or two ago... It may have played a part in her coming on board with us, to get some help! She made a plan back then. So I was asking her how it was going!
I appreciate your speaking on the animals' behalf. I wish more people felt like us here on the board and took care to practice stewardship with their animals.
I don't have any chickens yet by the way! We're building an ark for them... and hope they will come

So far so good. I guess! I never actually saw any lice - I just saw what looked like eggs on the feathers around the vent. But then that's the first chicken butt I ever looked at! I treated both with permethrin. I understand that Sevin may be more effective but it's something that I just want to avoid. I had also read that treating the vent area/eggs with oil will kill the eggs. So I put some olive oil there. So I'm just keeping an eye on them. The buff Americauna seemed to be affected but not the white. But I'm treating them both of course.

Hopefully it is when the sun is coming up and on a saturday so then I can just get up too and go fishing, I mean come downstairs and clean the house and do laundry! lol
