Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Afternoon All.... Congrats to your Grandson Susie....he did Good! Most of the early turkeys being taken this year are heavier than usual, due to the mild Winter we had. That's a nice first bird for sure, and I bet he is hooked for life.

MXM....you need to be scolded for allowing your flock to have vermin on them....Get them dusted with 5% sevin dust.....you are the flock manager and those birds don't need to suffer with a simple cure at hand. You don't want a broody hen hatching peeps into that environment...GET GOING.

Welcome to the new folks.

Dr.H when I looked into Vet school here in WI, it was going to be roughly 150K for all 4 years (not including the additional 4 years for the BS degree), so things have gone up (typical). What I think is insane is that it is easier to get into Medical school that Veterinarian school.....

I am enjoying today; it is a nap kind of day. The kids and I are being just plain old lazy. Every once in a while you need a day to re-charge the batteries. Maybe I'll run later...... I wish the wind would die down.

Yesterday for the EE hunt, my DD decided that it would be a good idea to hide an egg in with the ducks..... and of course Taffy thought she should sit on it! I think it made it out before the chocolate melted, but I suppose if I want her to get broody soon I can stuff plastic eggs under her..... LOL!

Mazo, good luck to your GF on becoming a midwife. We need more of them; I think mine is going to retire soon......

windy afternoon

trying hard not to get blowen around to much!

we raised meaties last fall, we raised Cornish-Rock Broilers, we keep them in a separate pen away from the other chickens, they need to be cleaned alot more often and as they get bigger they don't move around as much. Since we raised them in the fall we just kept them inside our work garage so we didn't need a cover over the top of them. Can't remember at what week we pulled the light. We did start removing the feed at night once they were 2 weeks old to prevent over eating. We will probably get some more this year as they are very good- we make ours on the grill! My SIL wants to go in with us for some, told her we have ti make some room first

Have to make sure we don't take up to much garage space and trailers have to sit outside

Last fall DH noticed that something was digging along side our house foundation- had quite a tunnel going so he filled it all in and now the other day we noticed that the same area is dug out again..... any ideas on what would dig in rock and what type of bait we should use in the live trap- not sure I want to use chicken.

Working on making some split pea soup today as I sit and (watch TV as my youngest DS seems to think!

) do paperwork. DH and my SIL(brothers wife) like it.

wow, it is windy out, sounds like it is going to rattle the windows right out of this old farm house!

I would guess that is a woodchuck (groundhog, whistle pig) digging. I like to use a 1/4 chunk of cabbage in the live trap, but really any fresh veggie with some smell should work.

Quote: BigZ, by way of explanation: Maggie had a lice prob with her brand new duo... about a week or two ago... It may have played a part in her coming on board with us, to get some help! She made a plan back then. So I was asking her how it was going!
I appreciate your speaking on the animals' behalf. I wish more people felt like us here on the board and took care to practice stewardship with their animals.
I don't have any chickens yet by the way! We're building an ark for them... and hope they will come

I am staying inside this afternoon..By now, I have watched enough cowboy movies to hold me for awhile..rawhide, (wagon train, etc etc,,)

one of the chickens in the yard had her back to the wind, layed the same egg 3 times..

I had ice in the hose this morning, and I think it will be worse tomorrow..

I decided to build 5 more drawers under my work bench in the shop. I am planning on storing my corded tools in drawers instead of on shelves or hanging them on pegboards.. I planed down a piece of 2x10 red pine to see how it would look for a drawer front.. A OK ,,, 4 more to go,, then I am going to plane some 2x8's for the sides and back.. (I need shavings for the nests)..

the 8 chicks are doing just great out in their pen.. I have about 6 more in the hatcher to take out there tonight or tomorrow.. and there are still more pips..

I have quite a few eggs to set.. prolly tomorrow night.. I will have to doe si doe some trays in bator #1 so I won't have to start up the 3rd bator , yet.. I am using bator #2 as the hatcher..
there will be about 5 dozen eggs to go into the bator..

I have a tray of 26 guinea eggs in the hatcher, not turning, sort of on hold for now.. I will transfer them into bator #1 tomorrow, also..

18 quail and 33 chickens will have to go to the hatcher tomorrow.. that should free up some space..

Good afternoon--I am relaxing just a little bit before going in for the weigh out on our Slim Down Challenge. Watching the CBS news about Mike Wallace. A very interesting piece about his life and times with 60 mins and other things he did,
Now I need to go out and hang my sheets on the line and feed the horses, see if I have any more guineas, lock up the torts or really I should bring them in...oh yeah--gotta get the blankets out and cover my plants too....

(PS) H&R...where and when will you be getting your meaties? I am thinking about trying again but in cooler weather so they dont smell so much! Maybe I can get mine in conjunction with you?
