Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Laughingdog.

Yep there are several of us up here in Northern WI. I'm about 32 miles NE of Antigo. I have Runner ducks,Mallards and a pair of Roeun ducks, guineas, Peafowl, Geese of a few varieties, several breeds of chickens. Also just aquired some muscovy ducks and call ducks.

So yes to your question, they will survive and thrive up here. Jvls1942 is in Wausau, Unkadan is in Eagle River and there are several even further north from us. Oh and Bigzio is in Clintonville. So there are lots of us. Check out this thread for the 2012 Cheesehead Bash. If you'll be up here by May 18th there is a huge yearly bash that several of us attend. Good way to get aquainted with us all.

Chickenscratch, your chicks were most likely just afraid of all the changes. They are like that. Like someone else said, maybe replace your heat bulb for a lower wattage red incandescent for a while, then go to the nightlight. I have 2 brooder fixtures hanging in my coop. One has a heat bulb for in the winter, the other is a 25 W red bulb that I run in the summer. It gets REALLY dark in my coop at night, so I always have a light on in case someone falls off the roost. If they still are complaining & not going up on the roost, put them up there. Sometimes they need a little direction, and sometimes more than once.

Yeah, that typo? of Jim's had me chuckling too. Where has Tom been, anyway?

BBP, your pic of your kids & the new bunny is just adorable!

I'd be interested in any good GF recipes if anyone has the inkling to want to post some.

Cind, if that person with the chicks has any more Dom chicks available anytime, I would be interested in a few, please. I owe Terri a roo and Moose seems to have turned into a lap chicken.

And I would love to get a few hens too. Speaking of Moose, his babies will be 3 months old on the 20th. If any of them were boys, wouldn't they have started crowing by now? I'm not seeing any of those pointy hackle/saddle feathers either. I've never had a roo as a chick before, so this is all new to me. I do think I have at least one lav roo because his body shape is so different from everyone else, and it looks like some of his saddle feathers are thinner & pointier. And he is 4 weeks younger that Mooses kids. I know different breeds mature at different rates. Anyone know when Doms or aussies start testing those vocal cords?

So much more to tell you but it's getting late & the sinus headache kicked in again.

Will continue this tomorrow. Sweet dreams, all! The wind is blowing like the dickens down here!

Here they all are. The first one they are with their surrogate mom, Jack.

The second one isn't the best pic, I know, but you can kinda see their tails.

OOOO Busy weekend with a wedding and a birthday party. Lots of love this weekend

We went to Menards after one of the events to do some chicken coop shopping. Hubby thinks the way I'm adding lock down measures on the chicken tractor construction is overboard. I've heard too many stories and seen my own cat persist at a problem out of sheer boredom til he solved it. Hungry coon will have much more time and motivation to devote. Gives me the heebee jeebees. All I could think of was hubs isn't going to be the one to go out in the morning to find headless chickens. It would be ME. So fort knox is indeed what I'm going for. Let's throw all we got at the potential problem at the get go for pity's sake. Wish us luck.

Will start to apply the sealant to the coop part on Tuesday.
BabyLady, I'm thrilled that you're planning to have some nail fun!

You'll have to send me pix of the manis you love! I'm going to have to let my "galaxy nails" mani go soon. But that's why I take pix and then throw 'em on a blog

ps... how can a spell check in this day and age not know what a blog is...

I hear you CC about that sinus headache... I have been taking drugs for mine all day.

Took DD driving on the highway, she is doing much better as long as she does not get flustered when she makes a mistake..... once a mistake is made she goes downhill quickly.

Headed over to the in-laws to let the kind have some country fun. My in-laws decided to try to do some morel hunting so a few of the kids and I went to try and help. We were completely skunked in the mushroom department, but we had a good time ramming around looking at stuff. We ate up the rest of the Easter dinner and then attempted to play Hearts. I have not played Hearts since I was dating my DH and apparently it has been that long for my in-laws too! We had all forgotten how to play and had to look it up on the internet! The kids managed to play well, even my 9 yr old. And since this was my idea, of course I lost! On our way home we were driving past a good sized mud puddle when we spotted a few toads in the road. So my DH stopped the car and the girls and I rescued the toads. All in all a pretty good day!

I would post some pics of what we found and of my orange fingernails, but I am getting really tired and I realize I have really fat fingers.....

Night!

Hi All!

lol so...

Sorry about the chick and the hen - sometimes stupid accidents happen with our girls

Dr.H...How's the 21st or the 28th for pick up?

CC... The guy says he hatches every Fri. ... Tell me how many, what sex, (I can try for sex on the Doms) how old and how we are getting the to you and I'll see what I can do. He's from Delaven on hwy.89. I could also give you his number. He also has Crevecoeurs, Ameraucanas, and I think the other was Sumatras as well as the Dominiques. If anyone else wants some I can put in an "order" and I could bring them to the bash... It would have to be soon, so he can make sure he has them hatched. I think they're $2.50ea could be less.

I locked myself out of the van today... a nice young couple gave me a ride home. I gave them a dozen of the freshest eggs they ever had.... right out of the nest! LOL They thought that was great!

The babies are doing great (and starting to stink) so I'm going to try to get the "hospital room" cleaned out so at least the stink won't be in the dining room. Got lots of cleaning to do this week, My son's case worker is coming for his evaluation
hmm.png
It's not that I mind them coming, but with chicks, and gardening, and a few other projects going... well, the place is a mess! The carpets are getting real bad!

My parents live in Portage WI. My mom wants chicken but doesn't have any place to put them so I am doing the whole chicken thing for the both of us. I have a horse named Shadoh he is a black arabian but it lives at my parents place. I don't have a place here for him here We rent a farm and the guy we rent from only likes cats and chickens lol. She has 6 of her own horses. She shows all the time. I used to show but it $$$$$ so if I'm lucky one a year for me or none.I like to take the kids to the fun open show and we all show him.

Well nice meeting all of you!

Chickenlover... welcome... I am your closest cheesehead, in New glarus but drive through Verona most days of the week. We have a backyard coop with about a dozen chickens outside and 9 babies between 2-3 weeks inside. You must live in the country or be an educator to have chickens in verona. Are you part of madcity chickens as well?
Lots to learn on here!

Celtic- those babies are getting big and cute. any big combs... I have a few solid combs already... cheryl is that indicative of andalusians... because my blue has a solid comb for a little one.

Pictures to come... first is dd(my chicken whisperer) with Ewok, our bantam brown leghorn and Leah who came from a blue egg EE. Better pic of her to come.
