Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have read all the symptoms and what it could be and only one that comes close is botulism. WHAT?!

The only common thread to last weeks chick death (same exact symptoms) was the feeder and waterer. I removed thos, replaced with little chick ones.

I can clen out he brooder omorrow. Ill use beach water to sanitize...

Gotta go... Sleep typing here...!

Have you check the feed to make sure it smells fresh? Sometimes the feed will start to break down and the chicks won't get enough of the vitamins and minerals that they need and this can cause problems.

How old are the chicks?

When we first started, we had a problem of DD losing chicks-they would go down and not be able to get up and we switched out feed which seemed to help.

It can be very difficult to tell just what the cause is as many share similar symptoms. In some cases time will tell, which makes it very difficult to deal with.

Cleaning everything can't hurt.

Keep us posted.

good morning, raining pretty good here.. that's OK.. I guess we need the moisture.. only , does it have to be so cold ?

It is neat the way Nora just became the Alpha dog in this house.. Prince won't even go out the patio door where her bed is.. she growls and he heads for the kitchen door.. turnabout is sooo sweet, eh Nora ?

the guy who had Nora as a pup and for her first year or two, wants a pup from her.. Another couple who have Llamas also want a pup.. If this keeps up I won't have to go on Craig's list to sell them.. I am getting only $200.oo for them.. I do not have papers for Nora, so I can't have papers for the pups.. that's OK , though.. this way the people want the dogs for the dog's sake and not just after the papers..

OK, I have a few things to do outside to get ready for this next round of chicks.. I have a brooder pen to add bedding to and change a few heat lights....

I have to get hold of my BIL for a bunch of short wire ties. I have to come up with some sort of banding system for the different aged chicks.. I wish they had four legs,

I also have to call DD#1.. she said she had access to peg board hooks.. I need a bunch of shorter ones..

I need a good spring tooth drag and a fine drag for the garden..

I need to go the feed mill today..

I need a secretary ..

Just took the turner out and candled. 10 clears out of 36. Called Donny to ask if he had chick feed yet. Nope! Told him he'd better get on it he was gonna have babies soon! Asked if he had built a brooder yet? Nope! Now he's gonna borrow mine like I had told him to do in the first place along with a waterers and feeders.

Now the fun begins. Bator neck.

H&R, that is a good idea changing out their feed.
FT made a good point too about the waterer having wetness under it. I put my waterers on an upside down crock/pet food dish and sometimes it gets really damp underneath there, prime conditions for mold to grow, which can be detrimental to chicks.

I played 20 questions with Bf4 last night to try to figure out what is going on with her chicks. Here are some of her responses: does anyone see anything that raises a red flag?

I have been checking vents of the sick ones today. No poop no blood no mites or lice or eggs.

KEEP IN MIND THIS IS THE SAME EXACT SYMPTOMS AS LAST WEEKS DEATH. New location of brooder. New chips, but same kind.

These chiks were born 3/19
I don't do temp in the brooder. I just go by how they are acting. They like to be under it, but aren't huddling.

No drafts, last week or this week.

Purina medicated chik starter

They poop and pee on the pine chips. Yes it gets damp I suppose. But I don't think it's excessive.

Clean the brooder? they've only been in there a week. The other brooder was quite dirty.

After the one chick was sick last week I put Sav a chik in the waterer for 24 hrs, otherwise that's it. Tonight I put sulmet and Sav a chik in waterers.

I think they need to create a label for me... "Official Chicken Enabler of WI Cheese heads thread"

I was just getting on here to call you a chicken enabler! She gave us 3 baby Americauna chicks and Carol, you'll have to tell me again what the other two are. I'm not very educated on all the breeds. :) I sent you pic on my phone last night of them all snug in their brooder for the night. The were quite spazzed at first but after an hour or so I went down to check on them and they were so funny! They were laying down but still pecking at their food. So cute! Thank you so much! I'm super excited! We named the white one Snow. Still working on names for the other two.

Sorry for double post!

No dead chicks... Yet.

I have two in the basement now. May have more joining. The one actually did look perked up this morning. Not standing, or walking, but not layed out completely and his eyes are brighter.

So I am going to make a mash with sulmet and poly. They'll get sulmet in water, sulmet in food. I have been talking with Bev Davis, and she thinks I should just treat as if it's coccidiosis. Their symptoms do match cocci, but since they're on medicated feed, and not been out of a brooder yet, I don't know how it could be.

I am going to do the best I can. I don't have it in me to go to the super courageous lengths some of you guys would go to. I am drained from the baby situation. BTW... Don't know if I said but my friend delivered her son yesterday morning. Graham Finnegan, 5 lbs 5 oz, 19 inches long. She said he was very cute with a lot of hair. They are having him cremated so she can have him near. I thought that was good.

Anyway... I will be so bummed to lose all the Wheatens. I paid a pretty penny for them! But I'm not bonded with any of them, so I'm able to be more detached. Hoping for a death free day. I might be asking a bit much....

Sorry about Brownie :(
