we had our bantams in with the LF for like 2 years then the poor bantams were the LF favorites and they got beat up. so we separated the silkies out. but the brahmas are still in with the LF, BUT they are their own flock.
Bl4 does your dh remember getting attacked or just see the scars/pics? My DD got attacked (remember that?) we had chicken soup for supper. lol I was just curious if your DH remembers that cause I was wondering if my DD may remember it.

I got attacked too before my DD did, we had soup that night too LMBO

He says he vaguely remembers the attack. As he has gotten older, the scars have become more apparent. It is really odd to look at his face and see these perfect toenail marks around his eyes.

It depends on your bantam breed, just like in LF some breeds are just more aggressive. Some of my cochin roos will fight with the bigger boys till they are covered in blood, but they dont come after people. And nothing is sweeter than my bantam faverolles hens.

Well so far I have 4 ducks, 2 chicks and 2 of the 2 goose eggs hatched. The Runner ducks and the geese needed help getting out. I never hatched out goose or duck eggs before. Any hints from the experts? According to GQF's website the temp and humidity is the same as for chicks so that is what I did. When I put the ducks in lockdown I didn't see movement but I didn't want to keep them out for to long so just put them in.
Any ideas ????
I have 21 more duck eggs going in to lockdown tomorrow so any tips would be appreciated.

I dropped off 36 more eggs for the 3rd grade class to hatch today. I almost forgot about it. Geeze another 70 mile round trip. I should have given it more thought when I bought this place. I'm close to NOTHING !!!

I bought the ingredients for the apple pie shots today except for the apple cider and the booze. Everclear or someting like that 190 proof or ???? I'll have to look at the recipe again. Hopefully I can find the apple cider this time of year.

So as long as I was in town again I looked at tents and air matteresses at FF, Walmart and Mendards. Of course I want the one that pops up quick and easy. I sure don't want to spend the whole night putting up my tent. Plus I need one that I can stand up in fairly easy. Not the easiest thing to do for me, walking bent over !!! LOL
I'm also looking on CL for one. Geez that would probably be another road trip.
I was informed to not let the Piggy's out unless one of the coop doors is closed. He had them out yesterday while I was gone and they went through half a feeder full of chicken feed. Little Pigs !!!

CRS about what everyone else posted so don't feel offended if I don't comment. It's H3LL getting old and forgetful. I haven't taken my Vitamin D for months now and I was real low. Dah, I've been taking it again and already feel a bit better !!!

PS Just my personal opinion but I think most bantam breeds should be housed seperately. Especially silkies that have huge top knot fluffy tops. They can't see well enough to get away from the LF (hens get raped). JMHO They may survive with LF but the stress factor isn't good for them and by the time you see that they aren't getting along together how much abuse have they taken. JMHO

As far as all breeds coming in LF and Bantam that's not the case. Several LF breeds do come in bantam size as well but true bantam breeds do not come in LF breeds if that makes sense. For instance, silkies are a bantam and don't come in a LF, nor do Dutch Bantams, D'ucles (sp), serama's, Japanese bantams, and several others that I can't think of right now. Hope that clarifies that a bit. I think if you go to Cackle hatchery's website or look at their catalog you can look at the bantam breeds section. They have a nice catalog.

Hi All, I just comment on some things I remember.. most of them I forget.. I never remember who said what, so if you asked me something specific, ask me again..

why would you take away the feed and water anyhow ? I can see doing that for the cornish X's but not for any other birds.. again, beware of what you read on BYC.. If they happen to run out of feed and water , it is no calamity either.. all it means is that they have full bellys... they will live until you feed them again ..

well, the turkeys did it to me again.. I have one sitting in the bottom of bator #1 and another one is well on it's way to hatching.. they are not due until the 25th.. I am going to give them 26 days from now on .. this is not the first time this has happened.. I am just a slow learner..

I have gooses setting all over the place.. I have only 5 of them, but it seems like there are nests
everywhere.. I have one pair of grays (Chinese TO?) that are a real nuisance to all the rest.. they from from nest to nest and bother the setting ones and chase them off their nests.. then sometimes she lays an egg in this nest,, of maybe another nest.. Annie saw her climb on top of two geese in one nest and lay her egg on them.. anybody want a pair of prolific but not so nice geese ? Today Annie told me to put them on Craig's list..

I think I have a gander sitting on a nest with his mate.. they are Sebs.. I should take a photo of that.. It looks like a pile of fluffy feathers.. they have at least a dozen eggs to take care of..

tonight I locked up only the four juvenile geese.. every other one has a nest.. I hope the fox doesn't visit .. another guinea was breakfast for something back by the burn pile.. I am guessing we have a fox problem again.. or hawk.. unless the owl has began to carry them off, too..

we now have 5 peafowl eggs.. luckily she did not move her nest after Annie took the first 4 eggs.. she leaves a couple of guinea eggs in there, hoping the peahen will not notice the size difference.. not so far..

the guineas moved one of their nests to the middle of the small blackberry patch.. brats !!

I worked on the drawers again today, until my back hurt.. I redid the first one and re - engineered the divider walls to accomidate the new style glides. I got two finished .. the last 3 will be a snap to get done..

Oh the big news.. the neighbor came and disced and dragged my garden today.. went over it twice.. It is so smooth I could plant lawn.. Now I can plant my taters.. He brought one of his big tractors over.. dual wheels on front and back.. both ends steer.. and he went down and back once and the whole garden was covered.. that drag was at least 24 feet wide ..

......jiminwisc.......... time for another Corona and then maybe to bed.. If I can't sleep, I might go out to the shop for awhile..

So that egg was from TOs chicks????? Wow! Mine are 5 days younger than yours, and I wasn't expecting to see any eggs for at least another month yet. Guess DH better get to work on those extra nest boxes pretty soon.

Bigz, that just stinks about the hatch. I had one pip then not do anything for over 24 hours & it still hatched. Sending positive thoughts up your way!

Bf4, I've found that if you don't have many birds (clearly not you) & the banties are the oldest, you don't have too much trouble. Once I got a LF roo, I had to separate my LF from the banties. My LF roo absolutely adored the banty hen, but the 2 roos were out for blood. I have read numerous times that bantam roos are some of the most agressive of roos. My bantam cochin certainly always was, and he still tries starting fights with Moose every chance he gets. If you decide to keep them together, try to keep a good eye on them. And I agree with Ang about keeping the heat lamp on your chicks, especially since they were sick not long ago. I usually turn mine off at 6 weeks, depending on the weather.
