something I found in the incubating thread.........

I either use my Brinsea Octagon 40 which sits on an auto turner and the whole incubator turns side to side, or my hovabator genesis 1588 and hand turn. If hand turning the eggs are on their side. If in the Brinsea the eggs are air sac up. I keep the humidity around 35%-40% the first 23 days. I dont add any water to the incubator, only mist, and it stays around 35-40%. Around day 4 or 7 I start cooling eggs for up to 15 min per day, and mist them with water during that cooling period. Day 23 I stop turning and bump the humidity up to around 75%. I hatch them out in egg cartons with the sides trimmed down and holes poked in the bottoms. I use the paper cartons. They hatch on day 26-27.

REALLY?? what the h3ll would THAT do? would they even cool off on the inside?

ok back to reading lol

sounds like somebody with way too much time on their hands..

I have over 500 eggs set right at the moment.. If I started at 5 AM I would still be at it 24 hours later, doing it their way..

that laying on their sides vs standing on end is not even up for discussion.. they hatch either way.. I have turkeys pipping all over the place and I have them standing on their ends and I never stopped the turner either.. ( it is stopped now, because I don't want to crush the baby on the floor of the bator)

the person did not mention what kind of eggs they were working with.. I assume duck eggs , not chicken, by the time frame she was using..

but if it works for them, they should do it that way.. I do not get the reason for "cooling" the eggs .. I assume they are trying to mimic the actions of the duck mamas. That is futile.. we are doing a whole other thing by artificially incubating.. whole other rules apply here..

This thread the guy is using geese as his example, but suggests this for geese and ducks

ask your questions here before you take advice from the general population of the BYC..
we ( or at least I ) will tell you if they are full of sh!t or not..

If you have only duck eggs , run at about 50% humidity.. If you have chicken and duck eggs, run at 40% to 50%.. at hatching 50% is OK if that is as high as you can get.. 60% is better, I have hatched them successfully at 40%.. I found that ducks are very active hatchers.. Geese on the other hand still give me fits.. I am with Earthlady ,, geese should do water births.. I am letting the geese hatch all their own eggs this year..

I need your email addy to forward the instructions.. PM it to me if you want to..

I agree lol actually that was the advise given with hatching the duck eggs. yes the calls are the only eggs in this 'bator. running at 50% now and will up it for hatching. PM is on its way now lol
thanks

Just keep a close eye on them at hatching. Those big heads and small bills make things difficult for pipping and zipping. I have helped and sometimes not helped and had some hatch all on their own. I try to wait 24 hours after pipping to 'assist' with zipping (only taking off the shell and leaving the blood membrane intact) after that, well they are on their own.

Jim, if you only knew how I hatched out my imprinted goose..... let's just say it was a 0% humidity hatch.... and yet she STILL managed to pop out of that shell, against all odds.

Guess what we caught on Trail CAM in our front yard last night??? After the bird feeder again.Scary thing is-this is larger than the ones the girls saw-plus there were videos of one 2 hrs early out there as well...thinking there are several. I need a little reasurance-has anyone had or heard of bears attacking kids or chickens? (There are plenty of food sources available right now-and havent seen signs of cubs)

Cute bear! I have one come in every spring. Just pull your birdfeeders at night.

I wouldn't worry about them attacking children. They usually only become dangerous if you get between a mother and her cubs.

Hey there bl4

Do you incubate the calls in a turner or on their sides? What about for lockdown? Inquiring minds want to know. If you want to PM me with the fine details that would be great !!!

Can't wait till I can hatch some of these adorable little ducklings !!!

BTW JIM how are the call duck eggs doing that you got? Did you candle or don't you due that? They are about ready to hatch right ? Please share your first experience with us (hatching call ducks not the other first !!! You guys get your mind out of the gutter !!)

Does anybody know if you can get apple cider this time of year. Non spiked ??? I'm getting ready to make the apple pie shots and it calls for 1 gallon of apple cider. I know it is readily available in the fall but now ??????? No store I checked with has it. I would think because it doesn't store for long?

Hey Bigz. Going down to Magee's Thursday or Friday. They ordered duck grower for me. They were out of duck starter. Guess I'll have to use the chick starter and maybe add some niacin or brewers yeast their food for the niacin.

Ordered 1200 lbs of their layer mix as well. You are right my birds seem to do very well on it too.

Prince also makes a new product that has oyster shell and grit mixed together. They carry it at Magee's and he said it is just a tad bit more expensive then the oyster shell alone.
So I'll be picking up a few bags of that.

DH dug out some lilac bushes for me to transplant. I may be able to bring a couple to the bash if anyone is interested.

Oh and I tried to vent sex my 2 gooslings and 4 ducks. Look like all females to me. I watched a video on Metzers website. I didn't see any little PeePees stick out at me so I'm assuming they are all girls but then again I'm not used to looking for small ones !!!!

So I could be 50% wrong !!!

no don't PM her, then SHE will be the only one to know lol. I wanna know too! lol

all 9 of my call eggs have movement in them

the temps are AWESOME in all the 'bators. IDK why I don't have the tamp swings like I did last year.... but I'M NOT complaining. the only thing different is that the 'bators are on my kitchen table and not stuffed in a corner somewhere.
