Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I've never heard of wild leeks before. Can you take a pic or post a link to some info on how to find them?

. Ramps, or Wild Leeks (Allium tricoccum). This onion relative grows wild in deciduous forests east of the Mississippi, emerging in spring. Leaves and bulbs are both edible. Grow in a shady border in moist loam, or naturalize beneath trees. Hardy to Zone

Evening everyone. Not much happening here. No more eggs hatched so all I got out of my first hatch was 1 duckling out of the 4 eggs that I thought was good. I think before I attempt incubating again I will make sure and get a hydrometer, only get local eggs (the ones I set were mailed and most looked empty to begin with), and stick with chicks. The 29 day wait was a killer lol. We named the duckling Shifu since our pekin is named Po from Kung Fu Panda. I watched a really good video on vent sexing and I believe I seen its boy part :). Which is what I wanted anyway so at least something good came from this hatch. The baby is really attached to me, where ever I walk the baby goes to that side of the brooder. Plus it cheeps louder and louder until I pick it up then it snuggles under my chin. I've been looking on CL for another baby duckling to put in the brooder with it but I'm not finding anything right now. Oh well I guess I'll just keep holding it.
Well other than that everthing else is going as usual. The chicks are almost 8 weeks, the pekin is almost 7 weeks, 2 of the mallards almost 5 weeks, and 5 mallards almost 4 weeks. The ducks spend alot of time in the pond I made them and they all like to wander all over. I am crossing my fingers they dont eat all my blueberries. I've got a ton coming in and I keep catching chickens in the blueberry patches.

I would love some advice: I have 2 broody hens (looking like a I may have a possible 3rd). I put 2 chicks under Deliliah who started pecking at them-so ended up putting them under Thelma. Then I gave Deliliah 3 LO and 1 duck egg to sit on,

My questions:
Thelma has had these chicks under her since last Sunday evening. LO is aprox 5 days old and EE is 8 days old. They are currently in a seperate pen area inside the main coop. When do I put them out with the regular flock? I have heard the younger the better but concerned as Thelma is on the lower end of the pecking order. She lets me play with the chicks and hasnt shown any agreesion towards me-will she protect the chicks ok? Would it be best to put them out for say an hour a day for a while or how do the rest of you transition the lil ones?

Second: Delialah-If she pecked at the chicks-will she do the same with the ones hatching? Or if its a more natural transition with them hatching under her-will she be nicer?

Evening all, quite the day at work. I was ready for bed at 5pm. Luckily my evening counseling has been canceled and I am watching a good for nothing show then going to bed in 30min.

On the cool side of things today I saw my Barred Rock Star pop out an egg today. She was all hunched over in the nest and I watched and waited for 15 seconds and out it came. Very cool experience.

I am hope my 3 mutts will start laying soon; they are nearing the 6 month mark of living and better start laying.

Night all.

Good evening! Yes DH is watching and keeps telling me to be quiet so he can hear...I say BIG DEAL! Not like he HAS to hear...I am sure you would find out anyhow! DUH!
I talked her out of it for now telling her we could get a couple meat goats, what is a banded male goat called? I have an alterior motive though with goats, I would like them to clean some of the underbrush on my hillside!

Welcome to all the new people and this is your fair warning, watchout for the enablers on here, if you let them they will feed you chicken drugs among other poultry drugs that are all highly addictive!

NFL draft is flying...am I the only one watching it?

So a neutered goat is called a wether NJ. I am sure you know that the female is a doe and the male is a buck. I dont know if there is a name for a spayed female...never heard of one I guess. If you do go with them they do make good weed eaters...but also love flower beds and pines! Pines will make them abort of they are pregnant; also you must watch out for Black Nightshade because that will kill them. (I have experience with that :( )

4H meeting was OK--almost everyone had their papers. I am just waiting for a coggins report on one horse and then i can take it in. Looks like we are good to go!

I am going to go and read that link about the leeks. I know they were all over in Tennessee when we went there over spring break on year. I went with my friend and our horses and we added the leeks to out scrambled eggs--YUM! I didnt know they grew here though! Anyone find any morels yet? I am thinking is should be soon.

Too bad you arent closer Apyl...I have ducklings running all over! I wish my neighbor was going riding at Ukarydee (in Arkdale) this weekend, I would send one along with her! Oh well....
Cant remember any more...guess I will read about leeks and then go and do some knitting! Nighties! Terri O

the draft is VERY important! lol Football is only like 150 days away! I have been offered a couple of times some goats and the same guy that offered them to me said he would band them for me! I was hoping to put up an electric fence around my wooded area and some of my upper lawn and have the goat eat enough that I could see up into the woods again! I will have to look for the nightshade and I thought there was something were a couple of other things that were poisonus to them too. My DGF has a couple of books on goats, guess I should get reading.

The Packers got a DE to help out Clay Mathews, he also happens to be from USC Nick Perry!

Early Evening All... I went out in the woods today to harvest some wild leeks. I know you guys are familiar with them...just a reminder that they are ready and real plentiful.....suzie added a bunch to the omlets tonight. Wanna smell my breath? They make delicious leek soup!

The peeps are happy as can be....sure is fun to watch the newbies act like adults already.
