Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning everyone, a very cold start here this AM, was ice on all my outside water dishes......... brrrrrrrrrr, the babies seem happy and not cold but I noticed there thermometer read 68 this morning, is that too cold for 5 week old babies, mostly feathered????? also still wondering about the mouse leg in my corn?? I'm sure the rest of it is in there as well, yuckkkkkk.....:sick
Will it make my chickens sick, they been eating that corn since Tuesday??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love all the little peep pictures they are all so cute....... I'm waiting for eggs my roo has been with his 4 ladies since Monday night, but my girls have seemed to quit laying, only 2 eggs the first and second day only 1 yesterday out of 4 hens, and neither 1 of them were my Delawares........... so don't know if they are just mad at me for separating them or maybe they don't like my Hansom? argggggg seems I ain't meant to have any more Dels.
Also noticed yesterday that 4 of my 5 chicks appear to be roosters, color not withstanding, but combs seem to be saying roooooooooooo........so I am not a happy camper thinking about that, I really wanted some extra pullets, not more freezer fair, and they are so too cute........... So for now later all. Kim

Morning all

TO-I'll call you as soon as I get off here!

GR65-Were you the one with the mouse foot in the feed? Do not feed it! Dead animals/ parts in feed are a bad thing. Especially depending on when they entered the milling process. Botulism is what you want to avoid and that is why you don't want to feed it. I'd either return the bag and get a new one or toss it. I would not compost the feed. Botulism can live in the ground and once it gets there, you can never get rid of it..... I might seen a little paranoid but I have seen botulism cases in horses....I just don't think it's worth the risk. If you decide to return it, write the code from the bag down and verify that your next bag is not from the same batch as the mouse part bag.....

NJ-what is a DE in football?

Ok, I'd best be off...more to say but day light is burning....later all!

Good morning all,
I have 7 babies in my chick tv for the kitties to drool over. (Apparently that's what THEY think!) I don't know how many I'll get rid of. I think I'll like orpingtons, and I do have 4 different colors right now. I looked at one lavender, and it looks like a girl. I'm hoping hoping hoping the second one is a girl. Then I would have 1 Roo and 3 pullets total. Just perfect to make and sell hatching eggs. :D

Thre was a mystery Orpington egg which was her CHOCOLATE Orp over another Orp. Oh my... That one is absolutely adorable. I can't help myself, don't want to name it already, don't want to get attached, but it's Hershey. It is brown colors, brown beak, brown eyeliner. I will have to take pics!

I don't know if his sounds dumb, but I want to tame some of these little chicks nicely. I want some of them to like me and come see me when I call. But after all my recent chick deaths, I am afraid to get attached to ANY of them. It would be so much easier to just look at thm like others do... As just chickens. So my heart longs for some chick love, but is very afraid to get it as well. Like I said... Might sound dumb... :/

On another note, our 3yr old doesn't talk much. He has a big speech delay and has been working with Birth to Three speech to improve this. Since he turns 3 in May, they can't work with him anymore. We have now had evaluation after evaluation with our school district to see if he qualifies for Early Childhood. We had the meeting yesterday. He qualifies. Great news that he qualifies! Terrible news he qualifies because that means he has significant delays in other areas as well. He is such a fun little boy who likes to move. It's just hard to see your child not develope the same as his brothers and feel hopeless in getting him too. So... I am blessed with 5 healthy happy boys. I will be grateful for that. My littlest is just going to do things differently than his brothers. Its ok... Just have to convince my hubby of that.

Hey... Anyone wants to meet me in Madison today for coffee or lunch? I'm going to the West side to go birthday shopping for my oldest. He turns 13 on Monday. Holy hel!... How did that happen??? Anyway... If someone wants to meet up.... I'm a lot of fun in peeerrrrssssooonnnnn... :D

I'm about an hour and a half south of you and just took almost 60 birds in for processing a couple of weeks ago to some amish people. Is that a possibility for you as well?

I am going to have my husband check in with some Amish he knows in the Mondovi, Wi area. I am also going to call our extension office. Thanks!!

Msschneid how come you don't just butcher them yourself , or is that you can't or just attached to them? They have an excellent tutorial on this site for doing it . You could also set it up with the Amish to butcher them for you and do a barter or exchange of cash with them. I know one thing I am not a country boy love fishing and everything , but City life is for me , 5 min bicycle ride from the job, 10 mins from the lake , I know ,neighbors are closer but it is a trade off. Gneta I sent you an email from my work , Barred Rocks look cool , they say look at me . Unless I build an unground coop I will never have all the breeds

. Do most of you get attached to the birds that you raise and never butcher them and just kind of let them die off? I guess easer to say it than do it .

We might butcher them ourselves-- but I would rather take it one step at a time. The last couple of years we hatched out our dual purpose birds and gave away extra roos. This year we decided to order some meaties for ourselves. I would never let them get too big and die, so I have no choice but to have them processed, whereas with the DP roosters I could change my mind if I got attached. If it goes well this year then we will probably process our own next year--at least my DH would. We might even end up doing it this year, depending on what our options are. However, I will probably stay out of it. I have participated in proccesing a number of animals in my life--I can totally do it, however, when it comes around to actually cook/eating the meat, I remember too many details and lose my appetite.

good morning, had some comments, they went out the window.. so I will just write add bit more to my diary..

finished the drawers yesterday.. took a grinder to the screw heads that were bumping on the rollers.. now everything runs smoothly.. I just filled a couple of drawers with as many tools as would fit just to see how they would operate.. it looks very good.. At first I figured 3 tools to the drawer,, but these drawers are larger than they look.. I can get 6 to 8 in each drawer.. OK this is the last of the drawer stories..

today the call duck eggs are going into the hatcher.. the 29th is the due date..
all I have to do is locate in which bator they are and on which shelf.. the first wave of guinea eggs is due also..

there is no more activity with the neighbor's duck eggs.. two hatched out of 18.. He is never too careful about what he collects, or how long he stores them.. the only thing that bothers me about that is that it takes up space in the bator where good eggs could be.. I will give these eggs a couple of more days, just in case.. I don't smell anything bad, so I am not afraid of "explosions",...

those chicks in the brooder have kicked into high gear on the food consumption.. have to fill the feeders twice a day, and it now looks like 3 times is fast approaching..

the Delawares are starting to look like Dels already.. I am sure I have plenty of roos..

what other kinds of chickens have black legs? Asian? Silkie ? My cross breed roo ? except he doesn't have black legs, but I am sure he carries the gene.. I wonder what he will taste like? chicken, I suppose..

it is a good thing it is cold outside.. then I will not feel guilty about staying in here and switching eggs and dating the new ones to go into the bator..

Our new neighbor came up to visit yesterday.. she wanted to know if they could build a corral on part of our property so she could bring her new horse home.. I told her sure, only if I could ride it.. they moved in a year ago in Sept.. this is the first time I have met her.. I still have to meet her fiance'.. Annie has .. I told Annie that it is nice to have NICE neighbors living in that house for a change..
